MJF’s got to experience Cody lie even before their first meeting.
The Undisputed WWE Champion is known for telling small lies. While often times being completely harmless, they sometimes also get people in trouble. During his recent interview on the Shut Up and Wrestle podcast, the reigning AEW World Champion revealed one such incident that led to his very first meeting with the American Nightmare.
The Salt of the Earth revealed that the very first time he met Cody Rhodes was while working for Ethan Page’s promotion in Canada. According to MJF, the former IC Champion had told Cage that Max was hitting on his sister:
“The very first time I met Cody Rhodes was at Alpha-1 in Canada. And he had told the promoter, who may or may not be Ethan Page, that I was hitting on [Page’s] sister, which I wasn’t. Now granted, I wouldn’t put it past me, but I actually wasn’t that time… So Ethan Page walks up to me, he goes, ‘Hey, man, are you f**king hitting on my sister?’ And I said, ‘Trust me, if I was you would know. She’d be my girlfriend by now.’”

After a small confrontation with Page, MJF asked him where he was getting the information. Cody was already a star who had his own locker room even at the indie show, while Max was just breaking into the business. Anyone else in his position would have let things go but the AEW star went and confronted Rhodes about it:
“I didn’t knock on the door. I just opened it and I said, ‘Hey.’ And he’s looking at me in disbelief. He goes, ‘Hey.’ I go, ‘Why the f**k did you tell the booker I’m trying to bang his sister?’ And he was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about.’ I go, ‘Dude, please don’t make me bring Ethan down here. And he’ll collaborate.’ And he starts laughing and he goes, ‘Who are you, man?’ I go, ‘I’m MJF.’ And then we started just shooting the shit.”
Thankfully for MJF, the confrontation turned into a friendship with the WWE veteran. It led to him getting booked for the original All In event and the subsequent story with Cody that established him as one of the top heels of the business.
