Big E, Charlotte Flair and More React To Asuka’s Apparent Retirement

Asuka might be done with WWE.

Tonight’s Backlash PPV saw the Japanese star taking on IYO SKY in a singles match. SKY managed to pick up the victory in this bout after blocking Asuka’s mist using Wade Barrett’s tablet, and delivering a diving moonsault.

The two women shared a hug after a match, with the former Kana looking visibly emotional. Combined with social media posts from earlier in the day, many people have been speculating that this might have been the farewell match for the former NXT Women’s Champion.

WWE Stars React To Asuka’s Retirement

WWE veteran Big E commented on the emotional scene during the Backlash post-show. He didn’t confirm if this was the end of the road for the wrestling veteran, but claimed that Asuka will be dearly missed if she is indeed saying goodbye:

“I don’t [want to speculate] either. I wonder if this is a goodbye. I haven’t really seen Asuka this emotional. If this is goodbye, I know she will be dearly missed. She has been a pioneer; she has done truly incredible things in the ring before she even got to WWE but has further staked her claim as an all-time great here in WWE. I don’t know what this means, but shout out to IYO SKY for another incredible performance. She’s someone I expect to be in that World Title picture again very, very soon.”

The former WWE Champion was not the only one who commented on the matter, as both Charlotte Flair and Bayley paid tribute to their friend on social media after the PPV. When a fan asked Flair what the tribute meant, she simply claimed that she was a fan of the wrestling legend:

Watch: What Happened With Roman Reigns After Backlash Went Off Air

    Roman Reigns is not happy.

The Tribal Chief defended his World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu in the main event of tonight’s Backlash PPV. After a physical encounter, Reigns managed to retain the title by shoving his opponent into an exposed turnbuckle and then pinning him with a spear.

The Samoan Werewolf did not agree with the results, however, and he unleashed a brutal attack on the Head of the Table after the bell. Fatu also delivered a Samoan Drop to the referee and took out General Manager Adam Pearce when he ran down to the ring with officials to get things under control.

    Roman Reigns Reacts

The PPV went off air with Jacob Fatu standing tall over the lifeless body of Roman Reigns. The PPV post-show then started with Jackie Redmond catching up with the World Champion on the ramp as he finally recovered enough to walk. When asked about Fatu’s attack, Roman claimed that this was Jacob’s last night in the company:

“This is why we should have never let Jacob in this company. You don’t belong here, Jacob, there is no order with you. It’s your last night here.”

Tonight’s events suggest that this feud is not over and we might see a rematch between the two cousins at the upcoming Clash In Italy PPV on May 31.

Roman Reigns Retains WWE Title at Backlash After Brutal War

Roman Reigns retained the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Backlash on Friday night in Tampa, Florida, but Jacob Fatu left the strongest impression after their physical main event war.

Fatu entered the biggest match of his career wearing a custom Oola Fala created by Haku’s daughter. Commentary emphasized the danger of the Tongan Death Grip throughout his entrance, noting the move is rarely used against family unless there are no other options left.

The challenger dominated early and repeatedly overwhelmed the champion with explosive offense. Fatu powerbombed Reigns through the announcers’ table and later connected with his signature triple-jump moonsault for a near fall that nearly ended the match.

    Reigns Survives Late Chaos

Reigns fought back with Superman Punches and Spears, but Fatu answered with devastating offense of his own, including multiple applications of the Tongan Death Grip. A referee bump late in the match added to the chaos as both men pushed each other to the limit.

In the closing moments, Reigns created an opening by sending Fatu face-first into an exposed turnbuckle before hitting one final Spear to secure the pinfall and retain the title.

    Fatu Snaps After the Bell

The fight continued after the match ended. Fatu snapped and laid Reigns out again before locking in another vicious Tongan Death Grip as officials rushed to the ring. One agent was thrown aside as Fatu continued the assault, while Reigns was shown foaming at the mouth from the hold.

The show went off the air with Fatu standing tall and posing with the championship despite Reigns officially retaining the title.

    What happened after Backlash

After Backlash, Reigns was interviewed by Jackie Redmond and threatened that this would be Fatu’s last night in WWE:

“This is why we never should have let Jacob in this company. You don’t belong here Jacob. There is no order with you. This is your last night here.”

  • WWE Backlash Match Card Rundown Revealed

WWE Backlash Match Card Rundown Revealed

WWE Backlash 2026 takes place tonight at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, and the full card and running order have been confirmed ahead of the show.

The event opens on ESPN 2 with Seth Rollins facing Bron Breakker, followed by Trick Williams defending the United States Championship against Sami Zayn. Both matches air during the free broadcast window before the show moves exclusively to the ESPN app.

From there, BodySlam.net reports Danhausen and his mystery partner take on The Miz and Kit Wilson, with the identity of Danhausen’s partner still officially unknown heading into tonight. IYO SKY and Asuka then settle their long-running program in singles action.

John Cena will deliver a history-making announcement segment, the details of which have been kept under wraps since he teased it earlier this week, describing it as something that will change the WWE experience for both performers and fans.

Roman Reigns closes the show defending the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu in the main event.

The full card in order is as follows: Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker, United States Championship: Trick Williams vs. Sami Zayn, Danhausen and mystery partner vs. The Miz and Kit Wilson, IYO SKY vs. Asuka, John Cena announcement segment, and World Heavyweight Championship: Roman Reigns vs. Jacob Fatu.

Backlash 2026 streams live tonight on the ESPN app in the United States and on Netflix internationally. The first two matches air free on ESPN 2.

  • Roman Reigns Sends Final Backlash Message to Jacob Fatu

Roman Reigns Sends Final Backlash Message to Jacob Fatu

Roman Reigns broke his social media silence hours before WWE Backlash with a personal message aimed at Jacob Fatu, the cousin who has spent weeks trying to rip the World Heavyweight Championship away from him.

The reigning champion posted to X on Saturday afternoon, framing tonight’s title defense at Amalie Arena in Tampa as a lesson Fatu is about to learn the hard way.

“Jacob, We’ll Always Be Family, But After Tonight You’ll Understand Why They Chose Me,” Reigns wrote. “You’ll Understand Why I’m One of One. You’ll Understand Why I Am The Head of The Table. At Backlash You WILL Acknowledge Your Tribal Chief.”

The note doubles down on the same “acknowledgment” framing Reigns has used to anchor his entire main event run, recasting his cousin’s title shot as a coronation moment for the Tribal Chief rather than a threat to it. It also marks Reigns’ first public statement since the May 4 episode of Raw, when Fatu locked in the Tongan Death Grip and drove the champion through a table to close the contract signing.

Fatu has gotten the better of Reigns in nearly every face-to-face exchange dating back to the Raw after WrestleMania 42. On ESPN’s Get Up earlier this week, Paul Heyman framed the match as a battle for control of the entire Anoa’i-Fatu dynasty, with tens of millions of dollars riding on the outcome.

The bookmakers see it very differently. Per the final Backlash betting markets, Reigns enters Tampa as a -5000 favorite to retain, with Fatu sitting at +1200 in one of the most lopsided lines on the card.

WWE Backlash streams tonight from Tampa, Florida. The pre-show begins at 4 PM ET, with the main card starting at 6 PM ET on ESPN in the United States and Netflix internationally.

  • Jacob Fatu’s WWE Name Was Almost “Cesar Sikoa”

Jacob Fatu’s WWE Name Was Almost “Cesar Sikoa”

Jacob Fatu was almost not Jacob Fatu when he debuted in WWE. The Samoan Werewolf, ahead of his World Heavyweight Championship match with Roman Reigns at Backlash on Saturday, told Peter Rosenberg on Cheap Heat that creative had a different name lined up before Triple H stepped in at the company’s Madison Square Garden debut.

“My original name was supposed to be Caesar Sikoa. Planet of the Apes, where my ass was about to be like this,” Fatu said. “They didn’t go with it. They kept Jacob Fatu.”

The “I Need That Title” Promo Was The Turning Point

WWE protected Fatu as a silent monster for over a year. He didn’t speak on television, and he admitted on the show that he was actually nervous to start cutting promos. The moment he finally opened up, on the Raw After WrestleMania, became one of the most replayed segments of the build.

“I don’t want that title. I need that title,” Fatu said on Raw, a line Rosenberg compared on the podcast to a “Hard Times” moment in WWE’s main event scene.

The character work to get there came from someone Fatu credits with making the entire Backlash story possible. Drew McIntyre’s promos heading into WrestleMania 42 were so personal that Fatu’s own children started asking him questions.

“Drew was so good at what he was saying, my kids start to question me. ‘Damn, dad, is he telling the truth about you?’” Fatu said. “That’s how good and how over it was going.”

The Rock Pulled Out $100 For A Kid Named Jacob

The interview’s lightest stretch came when Fatu walked through meeting The Rock as a kid in the Nation of Domination era. He asked The Rock for three autographs in a row, and got something more memorable than the third 8×10.

“They had 8x10s back in the day. I asked him for one, asked him for two, asked him for a third one. When he grabbed the third one, ‘Hey man, can I get a third one for my fridge?’ I think that’s when I first seen the people’s eyebrow,” Fatu said.

The kid then asked for lunch money. The Rock did not flinch.

“He was the first person that got me $100. Pulled out a hundred, gave me my brother and I $100. We thought we was balling. Next thing you know, my dad take the money and take us out to eat at Denny’s. Put the rest of the $100 in the gas.”

Fatu challenges Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at Backlash 2026 Saturday night from Amalie Arena in Tampa.

  • WWE Backlash 2026 Final Betting Odds

WWE Backlash 2026 Final Betting Odds

The final betting odds for WWE Backlash 2026 are in, and several matches on the Tampa card are about as lopsided as it gets in professional wrestling betting markets.

According to BetOnline, Roman Reigns is the biggest favorite on the entire card at a staggering -5000 to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu, who enters as a +1200 underdog.

IYO SKY is not far behind in terms of favoritism, listed at -2000 against Asuka at +700 in their singles match. That line makes SKY one of the safest picks on the card by any measure and reflects the expectation that the program between the two has further to run with SKY in a position of strength.

Trick Williams is a -700 favorite to retain the United States Championship against Sami Zayn at +400. Zayn dropped the title to Williams at WrestleMania 42 and has been building toward reclaiming it since, but the odds suggest bettors do not see Saturday as the night it happens.

The Danhausen and mystery partner pairing against The Miz and Kit Wilson carries the same -5000 line as Reigns, with The Miz and Wilson at +1200.

The most competitive line on the card belongs to Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker, with Breakker sitting at -145 and Rollins at +105.

Backlash 2026 takes place tonight at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, streaming live on the ESPN app in the United States.

  • WWE Backlash 2026 Full Card Preview: Roman Reigns vs. Fatu Headlines

WWE Backlash 2026 takes place tonight in Tampa, Florida with several matches on tap plus an announcement by John Cena.

Roman Reigns headlines the show, defending the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu. Fatu has been relentless in his pursuit of the Tribal Chief, going so far as to deploy the Tongan Death Grip during their interactions.

Trick Williams makes his first Backlash championship defense when he puts the United States Championship on the line against Sami Zayn. Williams claimed the title from Zayn at WrestleMania 42 Night Two, and Zayn has been working his way back toward a rematch ever since.

Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker collide in what is arguably the most personal match on the card. Breakker returned at WrestleMania 42 and attacked Rollins, costing him his match against GUNTHER in what was framed as a betrayal given the history between the two through The Vision.

IYO SKY and Asuka finally settle months of bitterness in singles action, with the match serving as the culmination of a program that lost a significant thread when Kairi Sane was released in the post-WrestleMania roster cuts. SKY enters as a significant favorite in the betting markets.

Danhausen teams with a mystery partner against The Miz and Kit Wilson in the wild card match of the evening, with Jelly Roll among the names most frequently discussed as the potential revelation. Bryan Alvarez reported earlier this week that he had heard speculation pointing in that direction, though nothing has been confirmed.

Backlash 2026 takes place tonight at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. The pre-show begins at 4 p.m. ET and the main card starts at 6 p.m. ET, streaming live on the ESPN app in the United States and on Netflix internationally.

  • Ted Turner, a better mogul from a better time, dead at 87

Ted Turner, a better mogul from a better time, dead at 87

Ted Turner, father of five, founder of Turner Networks, CNN, husband, ex-husband and lifelong partner of Jane Fonda, and lifelong pro wrestling fan, died at the age of 87 on Wednesday after a decade-long battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

Turner’s last public appearance was in 2023 at his 85th birthday party. Despite their 2001 divorce, Turner and Fonda remained partners until his death. She later played a media and cable mogul on the HBO series The Newsroom.

Turner was born in Cincinnati in 1938. His father, the owner of a large advertising business, moved the family to Georgia when Turner was 9 years old. Turner’s father died by suicide in 1963.

His children, in a CNN documentary about their father, stated he was often cold and harsh, especially during holidays and get-togethers, caused by fallout from a difficult relationship with his parents growing up. They claimed Fonda’s influence as a warm and caring motherly figure and wife changed his family life around.

A sale of his father’s billboard and advertising business funded the purchase of a UHF TV station in 1970. Originally airing reruns of movies and popular 50s and 60s TV shows and Warner Bros. Looney Tunes, the station, WJRJ-TV Ch. 17 was renamed WTCG for Turner Communications Group. It began airing Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Braves games in 1972. Turner would later purchase both teams.

Turner petitioned the FCC to put WTCG on satellite in 1976. This led to the station becoming an early channel on cable systems around the country. He later bought the call letters for WTBS and changed the name to Turner Broadcasting System. By 1980, he started CNN, with the promise it would stay on the air “until the end of the world.”

When Turner purchased the station, he also purchased the rights to air Georgia Championship Wrestling. A fan of the sport who recognized the popularity of pro wrestling in the Southeast, he later moved GCW to the Saturday 6:05 p.m. time slot, where it became a national staple for decades. Years later, GCW renamed the show World Championship Wrestling.

In 1983, a storyline featuring Roddy Piper saving veteran announcer Gordon Solie launched the show and the network into national attention. Highlights of the angle aired on local news across the country and was featured on the Entertainment Tonight syndicated TV show. The incident is considered the greatest babyface turn in wrestling history and brought about some of the highest ratings for wrestling ever on television.

GCW aired on WTBS until the infamous Black Saturday incident on July 14, 1984. After buying a controlling interest in the promotion from promoter Jim Barnett and brothers Jack and Gerry Briscoe, Vince McMahon began airing World Wrestling Federation content in the time slot.

McMahon tried buying the GCW time slot prior to his purchase of the promotion, but was rejected by Turner. After the GCW purchase, McMahon attempted to assuage an angry Turner by promising to air original programming in the slot, but instead aired clips from house shows and other WWF programming instead.

A ratings failure, angry fans began calling and writing the station wanting a return of the old product. Turner would later enter into agreements with Bill Watts to air Mid-South Wrestling and Ole Anderson, who began another Georgia wrestling territory, putting three wrestling promotions on the network at the same time. The Mid-South and Georgia programs were far more successful in the ratings than the WWF.

Losing money, McMahon approached Barnett a year later, who brokered a deal with Jim Crockett Promotions, who ran Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, to buy the time slot. At the time, Crockett was working to unify the NWA in an attempt to compete with McMahon’s monopolization of the market.

WTBS continued to grow through the 1980s as cable subscribers skyrocketed by 10s of millions per year. The growth was seen by Crockett Promotions, whose Saturday night two-hour show was one of the most popular in the country.

Fans of the station and World Championship Wrestling crossed all walks of life. Following the death of President George H.W. Bush, an aide to former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms recalled an urgent call from the White House when the show was at its peak. He was urged to make sure then NWA World Champion Ric Flair was at the airport to greet George and Barbara Bush at the airport. The aide contacted David Crockett, whose simple response was, “He will be there.”

The President was ushered off the airport tarmac to a waiting Nature Boy, who rode with the President and First Lady to the event, according to the aide. He spent the afternoon entertaining “mega fan” Barbara Bush. While in line for food at the event, one of the President’s aides asked him where the First Lady was. The President said, “She had run off with someone named the Nature Boy.”

Crockett Promotions would later be purchased by Turner to continue airing on WTBS under the World Championship Wrestling name, which continued airing regularly on the station until 1995, when WCW Monday Nitro was launched on TNT as a direct competitor to the WWF.

Turner began having less day-to-day interaction with WCW and Turner networks after the company was purchased by Time Warner in 1996. Originally a supporter of AOL’s merger with Time Warner in 2001, Turner soured on it quickly and once blasted AOL’s chairman during a board meeting, leading to his resignation.

    Ted Turner’s Life and Legacy

Turner attended Brown University, where he was a member of the school sailing team. He was kicked out of the school for having a female member of the student body in his dorm room. The university later awarded him an honorary doctorate.

A lifelong sailor, he competed in the Olympic trials and joined the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member of various America’s Cup teams, including the winning 1977 squad, which earned him the cover photo in Sports Illustrated.

As a sports-owner, obituaries credited him with saving professional sports in Atlanta and named him the primary influence in the city becoming one of America’s great metropolitan areas. His name hangs on a banner in the rafters of State Farm Arena.

Turner created the Goodwill Games in the 1980s as an Olympic alternative, but were unsuccessful. The event was considered a bust by critics, despite Turner’s goal of using sports to create better diplomatic relations between countries on differing sides of the Cold War.

An advocate against climate change, Turner pushed for the development of the Captain Planet cartoon to encourage kids to be environmentally friendly. He sponsored the United Nations Foundation with a $1 billion donation, a third of his $3 billion worth, in 1998. He encouraged the hiring of minorities in his companies, including MLB home run king Hank Aaron, who worked with the Atlanta Braves until his death.

He co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative, the Turner Endangered Species Fund, the Captain Planet Foundation, the Turner Foundation and worked to increase the U.S. bison population, combat global poverty and increase public interest in lowering the nuclear threat. He created TNT, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, TBS and owned what would become the greatest library in visual media.

He said selling Turner Broadcasting to Time Warner was a mistake he would always regret.

He described his father as “far right,” which influenced him becoming a member of the Young Republicans. He later became a staunch ally of progressive and civil rights causes while spending much of his wealth on fighting poverty and global instability.

He challenged Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch to a fist fight – multiple times – before the two made peace.

He bought thousands of acres of ranch land in the plains to help grow the bison population, then founded a chain of restaurants based on bison meat.

He described his experience with the U.S. Coast Guard as “pretty sweet” while receiving the U.S. Navy Memorial’s Lone Sailor Award.

After hosting a Native American dance display at company headquarters in Atlanta, he remarked that the performance was beautiful but he was afraid he would get scalped.

He once held presidential aspirations around 2016, but only for a few minutes. When he asked Fonda what she thought of him running for President, she said she would immediately leave him.

  • Paul Heyman: Millions at Stake in REIGNS vs FATU at Backlash

Paul Heyman: Millions at Stake in REIGNS vs FATU at Backlash

Roman Reigns vs Jacob Fatu is Money

Paul Heyman says tens of millions of dollars are at stake when Roman Reigns defends the World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu at WWE Backlash this weekend. The Wise Man explained why the match goes far beyond the title, and is the most consequential in-ring contest in a long time.

Speaking on ESPN’s Get Up, Heyman connected the rivalry to family status, power, and money inside WWE. He framed the match as a battle for leadership within the Anoa’i-Fatu dynasty.

“Well, what’s at stake is a lot of family honor here. Roman Reigns is the head of the table, and Roman Reigns is a multi, multi-millionaire, being the absolute number one top star in the entire industry, thanks to his Wise Man, Paul Heyman,” Heyman said.

    Fatu Wants Top Star Status

Heyman explained Fatu’s motivation stems from wanting the same financial success Reigns enjoys. He painted a picture of family tension over who deserves the top spot.

“Now, here’s Jacob Fatu, who makes a nice living, but it’s not the living of the Tribal Chief, Roman Reigns. And Jacob Fatu sits there and says, ‘Hey, why are my kids wearing hand-me-downs from Roman Reigns’ kids? Why shouldn’t my kids have all the new toys, the jet planes, the high life, and we will give our hand-me-downs to Roman’s kids?’” Heyman said.

He added that the rivalry centers on who leads the family and who becomes WWE’s top earner. “So, what’s at stake? Who’s the head of the table in the Anoa’i-Fatu dynasty? Who’s the top star in WWE? And tens of millions of dollars are at stake. And no matter what you think of sports entertainment or professional wrestling or WWE, the top star makes the most money. And Jacob Fatu wants to be the top star.”

    Rivalry Escalates Before Backlash

The feud between the two family members has intensified in recent weeks. Fatu attacked Reigns with a Tongan Death Grip, then put him through a table during their contract signing on RAW.

Reigns will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Fatu at WWE Backlash this weekend.

Danhausen Mystery Tag Team Partner Idea Pitched For WWE Backlash

Actress Danielle Fishel recently entered the conversation as a potential tag team partner for Danhausen at WWE Backlash on May 9.

The former Boy Meets World and Girl Meets World actress teased the possibility on social media this week.

Danhausen is currently searching for a partner for his match against The Miz and Kit Wilson at the upcoming Premium Live Event. In recent weeks, he has publicly attempted to recruit several WWE legends for the bout, though none have officially accepted.

Fishel shared a customized WWE Backlash graphic on Instagram featuring herself alongside Danhausen while sporting face paint inspired by his signature look.

“Just saying, we have history,” Fishel wrote in the caption.

    Danhausen’s Search for a Partner

The post immediately caught attention from wrestling fans online, especially given Danhausen’s long-running pop culture references and crossover appeal outside the wrestling world. The actress’s reference to having “history” with Danhausen sparked speculation among fans.

No official announcement has been made regarding Danhausen’s partner as of this writing. The match is scheduled to take place at WWE Backlash this Friday.

  • Jacob Fatu Gets Massive Push For Roman Reigns Match At WWE Backlash 2026

Jacob Fatu Gets Massive Push For Roman Reigns Match At WWE Backlash 2026

Jacob Fatu is being presented strongly ahead of his World Heavyweight Championship match against Roman Reigns at WWE Backlash on May 9.

The rivalry between the two real-life Bloodline members has become one of WWE’s biggest storylines heading into the Premium Live Event.

The feud intensified after Fatu attacked Reigns with a Tongan Death Grip, escalating the family conflict to a new level. This week on Raw, the tension reached another peak during a contract signing for their title match.

During the segment, Reigns mocked and belittled Fatu before the exchange quickly turned physical. The segment concluded with Fatu putting Reigns through a table, continuing WWE’s pattern of presenting Fatu as the aggressor who consistently gets the upper hand.

Bryan Alvarez Compares Fatu’s Push to Recent Lesnar Booking

Wrestling Observer’s Bryan Alvarez discussed the booking strategy on Wrestling Observer Radio, comparing Fatu’s presentation to how WWE recently handled Brock Lesnar ahead of WrestleMania 42. According to Alvarez, WWE has deliberately avoided traditional back-and-forth booking in favor of making Fatu look unstoppable.

“Say what you want about WWE, like they’re trying to do a pay-per-view match. There’s a guy that nobody thinks is going to beat Roman Reigns, and so, they have done everything in their power to just put Jacob over,” Alvarez said.

He drew a direct parallel to the Brock Lesnar-Oba Femi storyline from earlier this year.

“It’s like they’re doing this very much like that Brock Lesnar-Oba Femi thing, where they did not 50/50 every week. It wasn’t, ‘This is your week, Oba.’ Probably, ‘This is your week, Brock.’ It was like Oba beat him up every single week, and then he killed him.”

“And on this one, they’re trying the same thing. Jacob gets the best of Roman every single week, gets the best of the MFTs, gets the best of all of these other Samoans and Bloodline members. I don’t think he’s winning the pay-per-view,” Alvarez added.

Despite the one-sided booking favoring Fatu in the build, Alvarez noted he still expects Reigns to retain the World Heavyweight Championship at WWE Backlash. The strategy appears designed to create doubt about the outcome despite Reigns being the established champion.

WWE Backlash: Tampa to Air Two Matches Free on ESPN 2

WWE Backlash: Tampa will open with two matches airing live and free on ESPN 2 on May 9, giving fans without access to the ESPN Unlimited App a way into the premium live event before it moves exclusively to the streaming platform.

The announcement was made during Monday’s episode of Raw in Omaha. Trick Williams, accompanied by Lil Yachty, will defend the WWE United States Championship against Sami Zayn during the opening hour. The singles match between Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker will also air during the free broadcast window. The format mirrors the approach used for WrestleMania 42, where the opening hour aired on linear television before the full event moved to the app.

Williams captured the United States Championship earlier this year and has been feuding with Zayn in the weeks leading up to Backlash. Rollins and Breakker have been building toward their collision for months, with the animosity between the two making it one of the more emotionally charged matchups on the Tampa card.

The remainder of Backlash: Tampa, including Roman Reigns defending the World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu, IYO SKY vs. Asuka, and Danhausen teaming with a mystery partner against The Miz and Kit Wilson, will be available exclusively on the ESPN Unlimited App.

WWE Backlash: Tampa takes place Saturday, May 9, at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

Danhausen Teases Mystery Partner For WWE Backlash Tag Match

Danhausen is on the hunt for a tag team partner, and he’s aiming for the biggest names in WWE history. During this week’s episode of WWE SmackDown in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the fan-favorite superstar earned himself a match at Backlash 2026 against The Miz and Kit Wilson.

However, there’s one condition: SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis informed Danhausen that the match will only become official if he can get a tag team partner for the match. That’s where things get interesting.

In classic Danhausen fashion, the superstar took to social media to recruit help from a list of WWE legends, many of whom have long since retired. That list includes “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Triple H, Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, AJ Styles, John Cena, Stardust, Kurgan, Mideon, and Papa Shango. He wrote:

“Hello Shawn Michaels, Triple H, The Undertaker, AJ Styles, John Cena, Steve Austin, Stardust, Kurgan, Mideon Papa Shango,” Danhausen wrote on X, tagging each of their accounts. “How does 400 human dollars sound to come out of retirements and team with Danhausen?!”

Whether any of these legends will actually answer the call remains to be seen. The pitch alone, however, is vintage Danhausen.

WWE Backlash 2026 is scheduled to take place on May 9 in Tampa, Florida.

CM Punk vs Roman Reigns: WWE Scrapped Major Plans Heading Into Backlash

WWE considered an alternate finish for the World Heavyweight Championship match between Roman Reigns and CM Punk at WrestleMania 42 night two.

Reports have emerged that suggest WWE discussed having Punk retain the title before losing it back to Reigns at Backlash.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE explored multiple scenarios for the main event. The alternate plan would have protected Punk’s standing while still putting the championship on Reigns.

Original Plan Would Have Extended the Feud

Meltzer wrote that the proposed finish would have made the rivals even before Reigns ultimately captured the title.

“It was possible and apparently talked about that Punk could beat Reigns and then lose the title at Backlash, so they’d be ‘even’ when it was over but Reigns would end up as champion, as a way to protect Punk’s position. But the decision in the end was for Reigns to win here.”

WWE chose to have Reigns win clean at WrestleMania instead. The match went 33 minutes and 56 seconds, ending when Punk collapsed while attempting a second GTS and Reigns capitalized with a spear for the pin.

    Match Receives Five-Star Rating

Meltzer awarded the bout a five-star rating, calling it among the best matches in WrestleMania history. The rating marks Punk’s fourth five-star match, following his 2024 Hell in a Cell match with Drew McIntyre, his 2011 Money in the Bank match with John Cena, and his 2004 Ring of Honor match with Samoa Joe.

For Reigns, this represents his first five-star match. He has previously received four matches rated four and three-quarter stars.

“Reigns’ win over Punk was clean, and among the best matches in WrestleMania history. They went 33:56, ending when Punk had Lesnar on his back for a second GTS, and then collapsed and Reigns then pinned him with a spear. The storyline played into the interviews, where the match was long and grueling, and Punk got old and collapsed in the deep waters.”

Roman Reigns Challenged For Backlash Match On Raw

    Jacob Fatu wants everything.

The big question coming out of WrestleMania 42 was who would be the first name to step up to Roman Reigns after his World Title victory in the main event of the show.

The Tribal Chief was once again the one closing the show on this Monday’s Raw. This time, he had the Usos accompanying him. Roman Reigns first asked his cousins to stand with him once more, and the twins assured him that they will be by his side whenever he needs it.

The trio then looked to end the show with the Bloodline gesture, but Jacob Fatu’s music hit. The Samoan Werewolf made his way to the ring and made his intentions clear.

The former US Champion said that he wants everything Roman has, including the World title so he can do more for his family. He then challenged the World Champion to a match at the Backlash PPV.

Though Reigns did not accept the challenge at once. He instead asked Fatu if he would be ready to acknowledge the Head of the Table if he loses the Backlash match.

The champ ended the standoff, telling Jacob that he had a week to think about this. While exiting the arena, Roman Reigns also asked Jimmy Uso to talk some sense into their cousin.

  • WWE Backlash Returning to Puerto Rico in 2026

WWE Backlash is set to return to San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2026, according to POST Wrestling.

While WWE has not officially confirmed the date, a source with access to an internal WWE calendar indicates Backlash is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026. This marks a return to the Caribbean island for the premium live event, which previously took place in Puerto Rico during WWE’s international expansion of the Backlash brand.

The early scheduling reveals WWE’s long-term planning for its 2026 premium live event calendar. Puerto Rico has proven to be a strong market for WWE, with passionate fans consistently creating electric atmospheres for televised events and live specials.

WWE has not yet made an official announcement regarding Backlash 2026’s location or date. The company typically confirms premium live event locations and venues several months in advance, though internal planning occurs much earlier.

Backlash has become one of WWE’s key annual premium live events since transitioning from a SmackDown-exclusive show to a global touring brand. The event’s willingness to travel internationally has taken it to France and Puerto Rico in recent years.
