  • Darby Allin’s AEW Championship Reign Was Everything A Modern WWE World Title Reign Isn’t

Darby Allin’s AEW Championship Reign Was Everything A Modern WWE World Title Reign Isn’t

AEW Double or Nothing 2026 saw the latest chapter of the rivalry between MJF and Darby Allin unfold, as the heel regained the world title he’d dropped to his fellow Pillar of AEW in an intense main event. So ended a brief, but very memorable championship run.

Indeed, while mainstream wresting fans have grown accustomed to certain type of top title reign via WWE—particularly in recent years—Allin’s time on top demonstrated there are different and exciting ways to book the top prize a company has to offer.

There’s Only Been One World Title Defense In WWE Since WrestleMania

    Roman Reigns. Photo: WWE.com

When Roman Reigns spent 1,316 days as WWE’s top champion from 2020 to 2024, it didn’t so much invent as reinforce a specific model of champion. Gone are the days when WWE adhered to its rule that titles must defended at least once every thirty days. Here are the days of part-time champions and normalizing two-to-three month stretches without a given title being up for grabs.

While Cody Rhodes defended the Undisputed WWE Championship more regularly than The Tribal Chief, each of his reigns has demonstrated a certain kind of sameness in title defenses mostly sticking to PLEs and not happening at every single one. World Heavyweight Championship reigns of Seth Rollins, Damian Priest, Gunther, and Jey Uso all skewed in similar directions, as did John Cena’s last WWE Championship reign along his farewell tour.

Indeed, only the reigns of CM Punk and Drew McIntyre felt at least a little different. McIntyre’s reign ran just shy of two months, with one PLE and one free TV defense (but also quite a few house show defenses). Punk’s five months on top saw him work a fighting champion gimmick that stood out from others, including three Raw and two PLE title defenses (plus a number of house show title matches).

Still, despite a few anomalies, the story of WWE world titles post WrestleMania 42—at press time, five weeks and counting–seems representative of the current picture. Reigns has defended his newly won World Heavyweight Championship once, opposite Jacob Fatu at Backlash. Rhodes has not yet defended his WWE Championship since fending off Randy Orton.

On the women’s side, Rhea Ripley hasn’t put the Women’s Championship on the line yet, nor has Liv Morgan defended the Women’s World Championship. (To be fair, three of these titles will be on the line at Clash in Italy, but that still after over 40 days of waiting.)

One might draw all manner of conclusions about these trends, but regardless, it’s undeniable that WWE’s top titles haven’t been on the line much this spring.

Darby Allin Worked Fresh Title Defenses And Worked Them Constantly

Darby Allin unseated MJF for the AEW World Championship in a shocking upset squash on April 15, the same week as WrestleMania 42. The reign has now come to a close, but it’s very telling in his less-than-six weeks on top, he defended the title eight times.

Allin fended off Tommaso Ciampa, Brody King, Kevin Knight, PAC, Konosuke Takeshita, Sammy Guevara, and Mike Bailey—a truly diverse set of challengers, many of them fresh to the world title picture (and/or it had been quite a while since they sniffed the main event scene). Moreover, none of these matches ran under ten minutes, only one lasted less than fifteen, and every single outing proved hard-hitting, with no “safe,” easy bouts along the way.

Even CM Punk—WWE’s fightingest world champ in recent memory—only worked four different men in five matches across a reign over four times as long.

Darby Allin’s Reign Was Short And Sweet

    MJF at Double or Nothing

Particularly in WWE, fans are in an age of long-reigning world champions as full-year spans spent on top are not out of the ordinary. Indeed the reigns that don’t exceed reach the half-year mark tend to have either been significantly less memorable and eventful like Damian Priest’s time as World Heavyweight Champion or else clearly set out to serve specific booking purposes like Drew McIntyre’s most recent WWE Championship reign adding some drama and giving Cody Rhodes a reason to work the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber.

Darby Allin only reigning for a month and change was less a fluke than a specific kind of story as he defended his championship with a fury, backing down from no one, working no easy matches, dropping the title in line with a narrative of him fighting himself into exhaustion. Despite the brevity of the reign, his time as champ may well be one of the best-remembered title reigns of recent years, and particularly so in AEW.

Different Styles Of Reigns Have Different Merits

    Darby Allin
    AEW

Ultimately, Darby Allin’s short but exhaustive world title reign that saw him defend this belt more than once a week on average was not necessarily a better reign than any of MJF’s, or the reigns of other top stars in AEW, nor WWE’s world champs. Indeed, there’s something to be said for a world title being defended sparingly, making it important when title matches do come and ensuring all challengers feel like credible threats who’ve earned number one contendership.

Moreover, stability at the top of the card does matter to give a world champion the opportunity to assert his or her place as the face of a company in the time-honored tradition of talents like Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, Hulk Hogan, and John Cena.

However, there is also merit to different kinds of reigns, and particularly different kinds of reigns that match the styles of different kinds of performers. CM Punk’s 2025-2026 World Heavyweight Championship showed echoes of Bret Hart’s babyface WWE Championship reigns in the 1990s. Each were, largely defined by an in-ring virtuoso putting on solid matches against an array of opponents with greater frequency than WWE fans were accustomed to seeing.

Allin’s reign was its own beast—a daredevil taking on all comers, not shying away from heavy punishment or risky spots to go down in a blaze of glory. Truth be told, wrestling would probably be the better for more reigns that are not necessarily like Allin’s, but similarly tailored to the character and style of performer at hand.

Gunther Names The Five Wrestlers He Most Wants To Retire

Gunther has revealed a list of five wrestlers he most wants to retire, with Sheamus topping the list for personal reasons and Brock Lesnar making the cut for publicity value.

Speaking on Main Event Club, Gunther was asked to blind rank his retirement targets. His list in order: Sheamus, Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, and CM Punk.

He elaborated on his top two picks.

“The thing with Brock is for publicity and is perfect. Sheamus, it’s a personal matter. I want to retire him. Subjectively, they are all good choices. On the main roster, Sheamus was my first big opponent, and he beat me up a lot. He made me earn it. I hope I can kick his ass on the way out.”

Gunther has been dubbed “The Career Killer” after ending the careers of Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles. Sheamus is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury with no confirmed return timeline.

Gunther is set to challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash in Italy on May 31 at Inalpi Arena in Turin.

Former WWE Star Responds To Infamous AEW ‘Brawl Out’ Leak Allegations

Former WWE star Matt Hardy recently denied accusations that he leaked backstage information about AEW’s infamous Brawl Out incident involving CM Punk and The Elite.

The veteran wrestler addressed the claims during an appearance on The Mack Down Report.

The backstage altercation following AEW All Out 2022 became one of the company’s most controversial moments. Hardy made it clear he had nothing to do with leaking information about what happened behind the scenes.

Hardy explained the accusation never made sense as he has always believed in protecting the wrestling business.

“I think this is a misconception that people online seem to have, especially from that time when AEW and the CM Punk situation and the whole ‘Brawl Out’ deal happened with him and The Young Bucks,” Hardy said. “I’ve always been great buddies with the Bucks, and I’ve always liked them a lot. But when all that happened, people were like, ‘Well, Matt Hardy’s the one leaking all this. He’s leaking it to the dirt sheets.’”

    Hardy continued:

“And it’s funny, because I’m actually an advocate for not doing that. I’m an advocate for protecting everything in the business. I’ll give my opinions when there’s something I can talk about, but when people leak stuff to the dirt sheets that hurts or damages the product, I don’t believe in that at all.”

    Old School Mentality

Hardy explained his mindset comes from an old-school view of the wrestling industry. He understands online coverage and backstage news are now a major part of modern wrestling but he does not support leaking damaging information.

“I think we have to protect our industry. That’s kind of the old-school side of me,” Hardy stated. “I understand that all this stuff is relevant now, the internet, coverage, everything, it’s a constantly evolving world. But as far as me trying to bury someone or leak something, I don’t do that. I’m not that guy. But that’s what a lot of the sickos said, because they weren’t fans of me.”

The Brawl Out incident remains one of AEW’s most controversial incidents and it impacted CM Punk, The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega, and the company’s public image. Hardy’s comments show he wants no part of being tied to the leaks and gossip that surrounded the situation.

  • Backstage Update On CM Punk’s WWE Absence

Backstage Update On CM Punk’s WWE Absence

CM Punk is currently awaiting a creative direction for his return to WWE television, with his absence linked to the roster reshuffling that moved Gunther to SmackDown and brought Jacob Fatu to Raw, according to False Finish.

    False Finish reported the following.

“As Fightful Select has mentioned, CM Punk being absent from TV is due to a ‘schedule change.’ Sources tell False Finish that CM Punk is currently awaiting creative to return to WWE TV. Punk’s schedule and creative were shifted after WWE made the decision to move Gunther to SmackDown along with bringing Jacob Fatu to Raw to feud with Roman Reigns.”

Punk has not appeared on WWE television since the April 20 episode of Raw, the night after WrestleMania 42, when he had a face-to-face segment with Cody Rhodes that teased a future program. Nothing has been built on it since.

The update adds context to a separate report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter last month, in which Dave Meltzer revealed that WWE had considered an alternate finish for Punk’s WrestleMania 42 match against Roman Reigns on Night Two.

“It was possible and apparently talked about that Punk could beat Reigns and then lose the title at Backlash, so they’d be ‘even’ when it was over but Reigns would end up as champion, as a way to protect Punk’s position. But the decision in the end was for Reigns to win here.”

  • Real Reason CM Punk Was Removed From WWE European Tour

Real Reason CM Punk Was Removed From WWE European Tour

Former WWE World Champion CM Punk was recently removed from WWE European tour advertisement, and the reported reason has now emerged.

‘The Second City Saint’ has been away from WWE programming since the episode of Monday Night Raw following WrestleMania 42, with the company pulling him from several advertised live events including the upcoming European tour.

As per Fightful Select, Punk himself cited “some schedule changes” as the reason for his current absence.

The extended time away comes as a surprise to fans, as Punk stated on Raw that he did not plan on taking a lengthy vacation following WrestleMania 42. WWE initially attributed the removal from live event appearances to “schedule changes,” though the exact reason behind the absence remains unclear.

    Recent Appearances Outside WWE

While away from WWE television, Punk was spotted attending the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano MMA fight last weekend. The appearance marked one of his few public sightings during the current hiatus from WWE programming.

MJF On CM Punk: ‘A Piece Of Sh*t, But A Great Wrestler’

MJF has weighed in on CM Punk’s current WWE run during his appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, telling fans that Punk’s professional wrestling ability has never been in dispute, but his read on Punk as a person has not changed.

Punk and MJF had a multi-month feud in AEW before Punk was released from AEW after the All In 2023 backstage altercation with Jack Perry.  Punk returned to WWE at the November 2023 Survivor Series and is currently a top star on Raw, having lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42 before going off TV for what has been reported as a scheduling change.

Asked whether he was surprised by how well Punk has been doing in WWE, MJF said the answer was no but he had not softened his personal read.

“No I’m not surprised at how good he’s doing, doesn’t change the fact he’s a fcking cnt. He just sucks, a bad guy, but he’s an incredible professional wrestler. How many times do I have to repeat myself, he’s a piece of sh*t, but he’s a great wrestler.”

The CM Punk reference in this Helwani interview lands during MJF’s Title vs Hair main event week against Darby Allin at AEW Double or Nothing on Sunday at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing, NY.

  • Reason Why CM Punk Was Pulled From WWE Events

Reason Why CM Punk Was Pulled From WWE Events

CM Punk has been removed from WWE’s advertising for the European Summer Tour and several additional Raw dates in June, according to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Meltzer noted the company’s explanation was straightforward.

“CM Punk has been removed from the advertising from the European tour and several other Raw dates in June. We were told there is nothing more to this than a schedule change.”

Punk had previously been listed as an advertised name for the overseas run, which begins May 28 in Liverpool, England and runs through the June 22 episode of Raw at The O2 in London. He has been removed from the house show portion of the tour but not all Raw episodes during the UK swing.

He remains advertised for the July 6 Raw from Allstate Arena in Chicago, his hometown, as well as the July 13 Raw in Dallas, July 20 in Detroit, July 27 in Los Angeles, and August 3 in Des Moines.

Punk has not appeared on WWE television since the April 20 edition of Raw, the night after he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42. That episode ended with a face-to-face segment between Punk and Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes that appeared to tease a future program. Nothing has been built on it since.

Punk was not backstage at WWE Backlash in Tampa and was not expected at the May 11 Raw in Knoxville. He had been heavily speculated as a possible surprise partner for Danhausen at Backlash after commentary teased that his eventual partner would be someone who “loves money.” That did not come to pass.

Punk said on the Raw after WrestleMania that he was not taking a vacation.

CM Punk isn’t expected to get featured on WWE programming anytime soon.

‘The Second City Saint’ is no longer being advertised for WWE’s European tour dates and has also been removed from some promotional material for June episodes of Monday Night Raw.

The former WWE World Heavyweight Champion had previously been advertised for the full overseas run, which is scheduled to begin on May 28 in Liverpool, England and continue through the June 22 edition of RAW in London.

    Ongoing Absence From WWE Programming

As of now, Punk’s next currently advertised WWE appearance is the July 6 edition of RAW in his hometown of Chicago. The removal from European tour advertising comes after reports indicated Punk would not appear on this week’s RAW in Knoxville.

It was also reported that Punk was not backstage at WWE Backlash despite heavy fan speculation linking him to Danhausen’s mystery partner storyline.

CM Punk Fans Will Have to Wait Longer for His WWE TV Return

CM Punk was not backstage at WWE Backlash in Tampa and is not expected to appear on this week’s Raw in Knoxville, according to PWInsider, putting a dampener on the speculation that had been building around his potential involvement in Danhausen’s mystery partner storyline.

Punk’s name had become the top name attached to the angle after commentary hinted that Danhausen’s partner would be someone who “loves money,” a reference fans immediately connected to Punk. Danhausen’s public teasing of possible partners added further fuel, and the betting markets had Punk as the favorite heading into Backlash. Neither the match nor the backstage report produced any connection between Punk and the angle.

Punk has not appeared on WWE television since the April 20 episode of Raw. No timeline for his next appearance has been provided. Here is the card for Raw:

    • Acknowledgment Ceremony: Jacob Fatu acknowledges Roman Reigns
    • Oba Femi Open Challenge
    • The Street Profits and Joe Hendry vs. Bron Breakker, Logan Paul and Austin Theory
    • Brie Bella and Paige appear live
    • CM Punk to appear

CM Punk and Liv Morgan could bag movie roles for Netflix.

Reports suggest that they are being eyed by Netflix for movie roles, according to a report from Bodyslam.net. The streaming giant is interested in working with both WWE superstars, who have already built acting resumes outside the ring.

Netflix reportedly sees potential in both performers given their existing film experience. The move would expand both wrestlers’ entertainment careers beyond WWE programming.

    Morgan’s Acting Background

Morgan has already appeared in The Kill Room and has a role in the upcoming Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo, which is set to release later this year. The WWE Women’s World Champion has been balancing her in-ring career with her growing film work.

She regained the WWE Women’s World Championship at WrestleMania 42 last month in Las Vegas, defeating Stephanie Vaquer. Morgan continues to hold the title as one of WWE’s top champions.

    Punk’s Film Experience

Punk has appeared in Girl on the Third Floor and Night Patrol during his time away from wrestling. He also provided voice work for one of the Zebros in Disney’s Zootopia 2 alongside Roman Reigns.

The former World Heavyweight Champion has not appeared for WWE since WrestleMania 42, where he lost the title to Reigns. His status for future WWE programming remains unclear as Netflix reportedly pursues him for film projects.

CM Punk Gets New Larry Tattoo Honoring Beloved Late Pet

CM Punk has added a second tattoo in memory of his late rescue dog Larry, this time featuring the dog’s face inside a heart on his abdomen, continuing a personal tribute to an animal that clearly held deep significance in his life.

The piece was created by Maverink Studio and follows a paw print tattoo Punk previously received in the immediate aftermath of Larry’s passing in December 2025.  Larry was a rescue from PAWS Chicago, an organization Punk has been publicly associated with through his longstanding commitment to animal rescue and adoption. The dog was named after Lawrence Talbot, the character played by Lon Chaney Jr. in Universal’s classic 1941 horror film The Wolfman, a choice that reflects Punk’s well-documented appreciation for classic horror and pop culture.

Punk has spoken openly about his love for rescue animals throughout his career and has used his platform on multiple occasions to advocate for adoption over purchasing from breeders. Larry became a visible part of his public life in the years following Punk’s return to professional wrestling, and his passing at the end of 2025 created an outpouring of support from fans who had followed the dog’s story.

Punk is coming off a World Heavyweight Championship loss to Roman Reigns in the WrestleMania 42 Night Two main event.

The Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes addressed the possibility of facing CM Punk in a dream match, expressing uncertainty about whether the bout will ever materialize.

The match has been heavily teased since Punk returned to WWE in late 2023. The latest tease came on the Raw after WrestleMania, where Rhodes told the ‘Best In The World’ to name a time and a place for a potential showdown.

Speaking with ESPN’s TikTok, the WWE Champion acknowledged the match would be “really great” for wrestling but admitted the reality is complicated.

    Rhodes Explains the Complications

Rhodes named Punk as a dream opponent but admitted putting the match together would be difficult.

“Fans think it might happen but I think is very hard to put together,” Rhodes said. “The likelihood of it happening, who knows? Wrestling has gotten more — it’s difficult, you know? We’re collaborators these days, so it’s difficult.”

“I don’t know if he’d want that and I don’t know if I’d want it,” Rhodes continued. “But, I know just it would be really great and be very good for wrestling.”

CM Punk Face Accusations of Shoving Another Fan During WrestleMania 42 Weekend

Former World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk has been accused by a second fan of a physical altercation in Las Vegas during WrestleMania 42 weekend. The incident allegedly occurred at the MGM Grand on April 20, 2026, at 12:31 a.m.

TMZ published audio from a 911 call placed by a Spanish-speaking male fan who accused Punk of pushing and chopping him in the chest. The fan was attempting to get a picture and an autograph from WWE superstars at the time.

“So I was here waiting for the WWE superstars, and I was trying to get a picture and maybe an autograph from them,” the man’s translator is heard saying on the call. “When I got close, the star CM Punk pushes me and chops me from my chest.”

    Details From 911 Call

The fan told authorities he did not require medical attention. When asked if Punk appeared intoxicated, the man stated that “his face was red and his eyesight was full of anger.”

The caller also confirmed Punk was not carrying a weapon, noting “None. He only had a briefcase on his left hand.”

    Second Incident Over WrestleMania Weekend

This marks the second accusation against Punk from WrestleMania weekend. Shortly after the event, footage surfaced showing Punk slapping a cell phone out of a fan’s hand in a Las Vegas hotel lobby while the fan was filming AJ Lee and Bayley.

The earlier incident occurred as the two wrestlers were saying goodbye and hugging in the hotel lobby.

Former NXT Star Defends CM Punk Amid Steroid Accusations

Former NXT star Cezar Bononi has publicly defended CM Punk after the former World Champion became the target of steroid accusations on social media.

The controversy began when a Twitter user suggested Punk was on “gear” after images surfaced showing him in notably improved physical condition. Bononi quickly addressed the claim, calling it baseless and part of a larger pattern of questioning any physical transformation.

“CM Punk is on steroids—this is what this random user is talking about right here. Just the most absurd thing, that when somebody has any changes in their physique, the first thing that’s pointed out is steroids,” Bononi said in his Instagram video.

“First thing—kudos to Punk, kudos to Jay Ferruggia, one of the best coaches around.”

    Bononi Questions Lack of Evidence

Bononi emphasized that Punk’s physique is achievable naturally and criticized those making accusations without medical evidence. He pointed out that no one making these claims had access to bloodwork or other proof.

“This physique right here is very, very achievable naturally. There’s zero indication of any steroids used right here, but people will say whatever they say just to get their point in and catch attention. Did you have access to his bloodwork? How can you say something like this?”

    Defense Goes Beyond Punk

The former WWE superstar also addressed the broader issue of people diminishing others’ achievements. He argued that fans often try to tear down accomplishments they cannot replicate themselves.

“When somebody achieves something most people don’t, the first thing we do is diminish it. Even if he was taking something, he still had to put the work in,” Bononi explained.

“If you cannot achieve something, you better believe that some other people can. Just don’t point at whatever you believe they are doing to bring others down so you can feel a little bit better.”

Bononi made clear he was not taking a stance on steroid use in general, but rather defending Punk against what he viewed as unfounded accusations.

A behind-the-scenes moment between Triple H and CM Punk before WrestleMania 42 has been captured on video, showing the WWE Chief Content Officer crediting Punk directly for the crowd inside Allegiant Stadium.

WWE released production footage showing the exchange on the stage before Saturday’s show, with both men looking out at the venue as Triple H delivered his message.

“It’s a big f***ing deal, right? It’s because of you, man. Thanks for the house.”

Punk deflected the credit rather than accept it outright.

“It was a team effort, you know that. It always has been. Thank you, those are kind words.”

Triple H added that he was glad to have Punk there, and Punk responded in kind.

“I’m happy to be here, you know that. Thank you for the opportunity.”

  • WWE Legend Blames Security For CM Punk MGM Grand Incident

WWE Legend Blames Security For CM Punk MGM Grand Incident

WWE legend Al Snow believes security personnel, not CM Punk, should shoulder the blame for the MGM Grand incident that occurred during WrestleMania 42 weekend.

The veteran wrestler addressed the viral confrontation where Punk knocked a fan’s phone down as the individual filmed Bayley hugging AJ Lee near the hotel elevators.

Speaking on The Russo Brand, Snow made it clear the situation should have been prevented before it escalated. He placed responsibility squarely on the security team tasked with protecting talent.

Security Failed to Prevent the Confrontation

Snow explained that security’s job is to stop incidents before they happen, not react after the fact. He criticized the team for allowing the fan to get that close to Punk and his wife in the first place.

“The incident should never even occur. That’s on the security,” Snow said. “They’re there for a reason. They’re not there to just stand idly by. They should be accompanying the talent to and from and in and out of the building just to prevent such things from occurring.”

He continued by highlighting that prevention is the core responsibility of any security detail.

“Security company’s supposed to be there to prevent that situation from occurring in the first place and they were obviously not doing what they needed to do in that moment.”

Punk Shouldn’t Have Been Put in That Position

While acknowledging that Punk’s reaction could be debated, Snow argued the former World Heavyweight champion never should have been forced into that situation. He defended Punk’s response given the circumstances.

“You can sit there and put the heat on either party, but the real heat, I think, goes on the security company,” Snow stated. “Well, you know, Punk shouldn’t have behaved in that manner — well, he shouldn’t have been put in that position to behave in that manner.”

Snow also criticized the fan’s behavior, describing it as aggressive and disrespectful.

“The fans shouldn’t have been that aggressive and they were being very obnoxious and disrespectful, clearly didn’t follow etiquette or protocol or was respectful in any way of personal time.”

AJ Lee’s Involvement Changed the Dynamic

Jeff Lane, speaking alongside Snow, pointed out that the personal element made the situation different. Because AJ Lee, Punk’s wife, was involved in the moment being filmed, the reaction shouldn’t be viewed without that context.

“Especially when she asked you to go away and you don’t go away,” Lane said. “So you got a man up in your wife’s face like that. I don’t fault him for reacting that way emotionally in that situation.”

Despite defending Punk in several ways, Snow acknowledged the situation wasn’t completely black and white.

“Nobody was 100% right. Nobody was 100% wrong on either side of the fence, but security should have been there to keep it from even occurring in the first place. Just shouldn’t have happened.”

  • CM Punk vs Roman Reigns: WWE Scrapped Major Plans Heading Into Backlash

CM Punk vs Roman Reigns: WWE Scrapped Major Plans Heading Into Backlash

WWE considered an alternate finish for the World Heavyweight Championship match between Roman Reigns and CM Punk at WrestleMania 42 night two.

Reports have emerged that suggest WWE discussed having Punk retain the title before losing it back to Reigns at Backlash.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE explored multiple scenarios for the main event. The alternate plan would have protected Punk’s standing while still putting the championship on Reigns.

Original Plan Would Have Extended the Feud

Meltzer wrote that the proposed finish would have made the rivals even before Reigns ultimately captured the title.

“It was possible and apparently talked about that Punk could beat Reigns and then lose the title at Backlash, so they’d be ‘even’ when it was over but Reigns would end up as champion, as a way to protect Punk’s position. But the decision in the end was for Reigns to win here.”

WWE chose to have Reigns win clean at WrestleMania instead. The match went 33 minutes and 56 seconds, ending when Punk collapsed while attempting a second GTS and Reigns capitalized with a spear for the pin.

    Match Receives Five-Star Rating

Meltzer awarded the bout a five-star rating, calling it among the best matches in WrestleMania history. The rating marks Punk’s fourth five-star match, following his 2024 Hell in a Cell match with Drew McIntyre, his 2011 Money in the Bank match with John Cena, and his 2004 Ring of Honor match with Samoa Joe.

For Reigns, this represents his first five-star match. He has previously received four matches rated four and three-quarter stars.

“Reigns’ win over Punk was clean, and among the best matches in WrestleMania history. They went 33:56, ending when Punk had Lesnar on his back for a second GTS, and then collapsed and Reigns then pinned him with a spear. The storyline played into the interviews, where the match was long and grueling, and Punk got old and collapsed in the deep waters.”

WWE has officially announced that Night of Champions 2026 will return to Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

The announcement comes from the General Entertainment Authority and Riyadh Season, under the leadership of His Excellency Turki Alalshikh, in cooperation with WWE. Tickets go on sale Monday, April 27 at WeBook.com.

“We are proud to welcome Night of Champions back to Riyadh and look forward to delivering another unforgettable night of WWE action for fans in the Kingdom and around the world,” Alalshikh said in the announcement.

Official Confirmation Ends Weeks Of Uncertainty

Today’s announcement puts to rest significant doubt that had surrounded the event. In March, POST Wrestling reported that Night of Champions had been internally penciled for June 27 in Riyadh but noted the event’s status was in question due to military conflict in the region. At the time, neither WWE nor Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority responded to inquiries about potential rescheduling or cancellation.

Night of Champions will be WWE’s second premium live event in Saudi Arabia in 2026, following the Royal Rumble in Riyadh earlier this year, which saw Roman Reigns and Liv Morgan win their respective matches.

ESPN Unlimited Takes Over US Broadcast

The 2026 edition will broadcast live in the United States on the ESPN app with an ESPN Unlimited plan, marking another major PLE under WWE’s new domestic streaming deal. Internationally, the event will stream on Netflix.

According to the announcement, the 2025 edition broke WWE’s U.S. viewership record for a Saudi Arabia event. That show, held at Kingdom Arena on June 28, 2025, featured John Cena defeating CM Punk to retain the Undisputed WWE Championship in what became the final singles match between the longtime rivals. The event also crowned Cody Rhodes as King of the Ring and Jade Cargill as Queen of the Ring.

Road To WrestleMania 43 In Riyadh

The return to Riyadh is another step in WWE’s deepening relationship with Saudi Arabia, which began with a ten-year partnership in 2018. WrestleMania 43 is scheduled for Riyadh in 2027, marking the first time the flagship event will be staged outside of the United States and Canada.

The official match card for Night of Champions 2026 has not yet been announced. Stay with SEScoops for continuing coverage as the card takes shape.

  • Drew McIntyre: I Don’t Hate CM Punk, I Just Thinks He’s ‘Trash’

Drew McIntyre: I Don’t Hate CM Punk, I Just Thinks He’s ‘Trash’

Drew McIntyre isn’t backing down from his issues with CM Punk, but he is drawing a line on one thing. The Scottish Warrior says he doesn’t actually hate the man, even if their animosity remains very real.

Speaking on the Bobbycast Podcast, the multi-time World Champion addressed the ongoing tension with Punk and made his position clear.

While the bad blood is genuine, he framed it as a matter of opinion, rather than emotion.

“I just don’t have anyone I genuinely don’t like. I don’t have time for hate in my life. I don’t really hate him—I think he’s a piece of crap,” McIntyre said. “I don’t have time for haters. So I don’t really hate Punk—I just think he’s a piece of trash.”

McIntyre Previously Compared Punk to Charles Manson

The comments mark a shift in tone from what McIntyre was saying just months earlier. During a June 2024 interview on Guerilla Position: Beyond the Ring, he went much further in describing Punk’s connection with the WWE Universe.

“He has a Charles Manson-like quality. The way he’s just able to convince people to do his bidding and love him,” McIntyre said at the time.

He also compared Punk’s influence to that of dictators, expressing frustration that even Scottish crowds cheered for Punk during their feud.

“They cheer Punk the other night… that kind of hurt. Even in Scotland. It just has that weird thing that certain people in history have. Dictators and the likes,” he added.

The Rivalry Was Real in 2024

McIntyre has consistently maintained that what fans saw between him and Punk in 2024 wasn’t just storyline. He described their rivalry as the result of two talented performers who genuinely don’t like each other.

“The result of a couple of people that are really good at their job who genuinely don’t like each other… was what you saw in 2024,” McIntyre stated.

With these latest comments, McIntyre isn’t softening his stance on Punk. He’s simply redefining it, making clear that while he may not “hate” his rival, the tension between them hasn’t gone anywhere.

Backstage News On Talent Reaction To WrestleMania Fan Incidents

Talents feel TKO is to blame.

The incident with CM Punk having to step in to stop a fan from violating the personal space of AJ Lee and Bayley during WrestleMania week has started a debate about talent security. Since then, we have learned of other names facing similar incidents all week, including Booker T getting filmed in the bathroom, and Sean Waltman getting assaulted by a fan.

Fightful Select recently provided an update on the reason behind it and the talent reactions. They noted that talents are responsible for hotel bookings on most shows, but WWE provides accommodation for bigger events like WrestleMania. Wrestlers being grouped together, however, leads to an increased rush of fans and autograph hounds. Some talents do opt to stay at different hotels, but it makes WWE arranging travel services more difficult.

    Fucked From The Beginning

The almost unanimous sentiment among talent is that WWE and TKO need to do more to protect superstars. They believe that the company should be providing site security or paying talents to get security for themselves. One prominent female talent criticised the company for only doing damage control after the fact:

“It’s Vegas, we were fucked from the beginning. WWE never actually pre arranges good security. It’s like they wait until shit happens, then they do damage control or add security. We love the personal security teams, and they did as much as they could but hotel security was busy taking care of the problems you already have in Las Vegas.”

One talent believes that the rise in ticket prices under TKO management is a component fuelling the problem, as they feel like fans who would normally be willing to pay for meet and greets no longer find them financially accessible.

Though one wrestler did say that this kind of thing was to be expected during a busy weekend like WrestleMania. Another name thought that CM Punk should have handled things differently because of his past physical incidents.

  • Roman Reigns to CM Punk: ‘We Made Magic. I Still Hate You’

Roman Reigns to CM Punk: ‘We Made Magic. I Still Hate You’

Roman Reigns is a world champion again, and he had a message for the man he took the title from.

Reigns defeated CM Punk in the Night Two main event of WrestleMania 42 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to capture the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, ending Punk’s reign and securing Reigns’ first world title since losing the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 40 after a record-setting 1,316-day reign.

Following the match, Reigns posted a message to Punk on social media that acknowledged the complexity of their history while giving credit where it was due.

“Despite all the sh** you’ve put me through over the years, I can honestly say under those bright lights… we made magic. I still hate you, but last night will live forever,” Reigns wrote.

The statement captured the tone of a rivalry built on genuine animosity. Triple H had described the tension between the two men in the lead-up to WrestleMania as something that did not stop backstage, calling the atmosphere palpable enough to cut with a knife whenever both were in the same building. The match itself lived up to the intensity of that build, delivering the kind of main event moment Allegiant Stadium had been waiting for across both nights.

Reigns is already advertised for tonight’s episode of Raw as the new World Heavyweight Champion and has indicated he plans to remain active throughout the summer. Reports emerging after WrestleMania suggest GUNTHER and Oba Femi are among the opponents being lined up for his upcoming program as WWE builds toward its next phase of major championship feuds.

Fans Rally for Paige WWE 2K26 DLC After WrestleMania Return

Paige’s shock return at WrestleMania 42 has fans pushing hard for her to be added to WWE 2K26, with social media campaigns targeting the game’s upcoming WrestleMania 42 Pack DLC.

After eight years away from a WWE ring, Paige replaced an injured Nikki Bella on Night 1 at Allegiant Stadium and teamed with Brie Bella to capture the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship. She pinned Alexa Bliss with the RamPaige to cap the fatal four-way, marking her first WWE title win since August 2014.

The moment immediately reshaped fan wishlists for 2K’s post-launch content. With Paige signing a multi-year deal and returning as champion, players have flooded social feeds asking 2K to add her likeness, entrance, and updated attire to WWE 2K26.

    WrestleMania 42 Pack Details

The WrestleMania 42 Pack is a separate drop from Ringside Pass Season 2, which launched April 15 with Demolition’s Ax, Smash, and Crush plus Kelly Kelly. According to 2K, the WrestleMania 42 Pack will include the Night 1 and Night 2 arenas along with three WrestleMania 42 Superstar Persona Cards.

The pack is automatically delivered to Monday Night War Edition owners and will also be available for standalone purchase. An exact release date has yet to be announced.

    Fan Wishlist Takes Shape

Paige leads the unofficial fan wishlist, but she is far from the only name circulating. Requests have poured in for updated Liv Morgan attire, Roman Reigns’ Tribal Chief gear from his WrestleMania 42 run, and CM Punk’s WrestleMania 42 outfit as potential Persona Card additions.

Fan mockups featuring silhouetted roster slots have spread across wrestling gaming communities, speculating on which three Personas 2K will pick from a weekend packed with memorable moments. The pack format favors quick-turnaround additions that can reuse existing in-game models.

2K has not publicly responded to the Paige campaign, and there is no confirmation she is under consideration. The Ringside Pass roadmap through Season 6 already includes Brie Bella as a Season 5 addition, but no 2K26 slot for Paige has been announced.

  • CM Punk Involved In Fan Incident After WWE WrestleMania 42

CM Punk Involved In Fan Incident After WWE WrestleMania 42

CM Punk’s difficult WrestleMania 42 weekend extended well past the final bell, with a tense confrontation at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino caught on video in the hours after his loss to Roman Reigns.

According to footage obtained by TMZ, Punk got into an altercation with a fan in the hotel lobby just after midnight. The incident began when the fan was filming Bayley as she embraced someone nearby. Punk intervened and knocked the fan’s phone down.

Ace Steel was also present and stepped in to keep the situation from escalating further as security rushed over to separate everyone involved. The fan, who initially appeared upset, quickly backed off and apologized multiple times before leaving the area. The confrontation did not turn into a physical fight, but the tension in the footage is clear.

Punk had already been seen backstage at Allegiant Stadium looking worn down after the loss, with the Night Two main event defeat to Reigns visibly hitting him hard. The lobby incident added another difficult chapter to an already painful night.

Reigns pinned Punk in the WrestleMania 42 Night Two main event to capture the World Heavyweight Championship, ending Punk’s title reign and capping off a weekend that did not go the way the Best in the World had planned.

  • Roman Reigns Wins 7th World Title At WrestleMania 42

Roman Reigns Wins 7th World Title At WrestleMania 42

Roman Reigns is a seven-time world champion. The Tribal Chief ended CM Punk’s second World Heavyweight Championship reign at 169 days, pinning Punk clean in the WrestleMania 42 main event to win the title at Allegiant Stadium.

Reigns earned the shot by winning the 2026 Royal Rumble in January. Two days before the match, he told reporters he would leave WWE if he lost. He didn’t have to. After 33:57 of back-and-forth with Punk, Reigns drove through the champion with a second running Spear to close WrestleMania 42.

    The Finish

Punk had the match won twice. He threw his wrist tape at the referee as a distraction, hit Reigns with a low blow, and drilled him with a Go To Sleep. Reigns kicked out. Punk followed with elbow drops, shoved Reigns outside, climbed to the top, and put him through the announce table with a flying elbow. Reigns answered with a powerbomb through the Spanish announce table moments later.

Back in the ring, Reigns trapped Punk in the corner and punished him with clotheslines as the crowd counted along. Punk rallied one more time, hitting another GTS. When he tried to hoist Reigns up for a second one, he collapsed under the weight. Reigns recovered, hit a Spear, but couldn’t follow up with a cover. Both men stared each other down from their knees. Reigns lined up, took a running start, and drove through Punk with a second Spear for the clean three count.

A Record 11th WrestleMania Main Event

This was Reigns’ record 11th WrestleMania main event, more than any performer in company history. His previous world title reign lasted 1,316 days. This seventh reign adds to a resume that already includes four Universal Championship runs and one Undisputed WWE Universal Championship run stretching from 2020 to 2024.

Reigns entered to a live stage setup — a singer, a piano player, and a drummer on the ramp — as photos of the Anoa’i family’s Samoan dynasty flashed on the big screen. Peter Maivia. Afa. Sika. Yokozuna. Reigns held up the index finger. George Kittle and Tyrese Haliburton were shown at ringside doing the same.

Punk’s Reign Ends At 169 Days

Punk won the World Heavyweight Championship from Seth Rollins at WrestlePalooza last September and successfully defended it against Finn Balor at Elimination Chamber in February. He went into WrestleMania 42 positioning himself as the fighting champion against a part-time challenger, a theme he hit hard in promos across the spring.

The loss closes Punk’s second world title run. His first reign as World Heavyweight Champion ended when his WrestleMania 42 entrance proved to be the high-water mark of the reign — he walked out to AFI’s “Miseria Cantare” in a tribute jacket, but walked back without the title.

    The Feud Resolved

Punk and Reigns had not wrestled one-on-one since January 2014, weeks before Punk’s original WWE departure. The feud this spring turned genuinely personal. Triple H told Joe Tessitore the backstage tension between the two was “palpable.” Reigns cut a viral car promo on ESPN. Punk answered on Get Up with a line about making Reigns’ orthodontist rich.

The real-life history between the two — Punk’s 2014 podcast comments about Reigns that fans cite as one of the origin points of Reigns’ early babyface rejection — was the subtext of every segment. Reigns addressed it directly on the Raw after the Royal Rumble, telling Punk he hated him for the damage those comments did to his career.

Sunday settled it. Clean. In the middle of the ring. Reigns wins.

    What’s Next

The new World Heavyweight Champion is advertised for Raw on Monday. Fallout from the title change, plus the first signs of where the title picture heads next, start there. Seth Rollins has already said publicly he would be interested in challenging whoever walked out of WrestleMania 42 with the belt.
