  • Tony Khan: \”The Balance of Power in Wrestling Will Shift Tonight\” at AEW Dynamite

AEW President Tony Khan says this week\’s episode of Dynamite will be an eventful one. (Dynamite Preview)

Saturday\’s Full Gear pay-per-view brought multiple title changes, including Darby Allin capturing the TNT Championship from Cody Rhodes and the Young Bucks dethroning FTR for the AEW tag titles. We also saw MJF defeat Chris Jericho to earn a spot for himself and Wardlow in the Inner Circle.

In a tweet sent out Wednesday morning, Khan went above and beyond with his hype for the broadcast. In addition to a great lineup of matches, AEW fans were told to expect \”massive surprises\” ahead. He then said, \”Please join us on TNT tonight, the balance of power in wrestling will shift tonight.\”

The \”balance of power in wrestling\” shifting is a bold claim that would seem to describe an event more significant than MJF and Wardlow joining the Inner Circle. Even a scenario like the Inner Circle turning on Chris Jericho would fall short of Khan\’s statement.

Perhaps we will see a new act debut or the return of PAC. AEW has a strong track record with post-PPV shows. The Dynamite after last year\’s full gear featured the debut of Wardlow. After Revolution, we had the formation of Death Triangle (PAC, Penta El Zero M & Rey Fenix). FTR made their first AEW appearance after Double or Nothin and Miro made his debut after All Out.

The good news is that we will only have to wait a few more hours to find out what Tony Khan is talking about.

Discussion: What do you think Tony Khan is alluding to?

  • AEW Dynamite Preview: MJF Joins Inner Circle, Penta-Fenix 2

This week\’s live edition of AEW Dynamite will feature plenty of fallout from Saturday\’s Full Gear pay-per-view. The following is an updated preview for Wednesday\’s broadcast:

    • Penta El Zero M vs. Rey Fenix. This is a rematch from their recent battle in the opening round of the AEW World title eliminator tournament.
    • MJF and Wardlow will be officially inducted into Chris Jericho\’s Inner Circle.
    • The Natural Nightmares vs. The Butcher & The Blade in a Bunkhouse Match
    • Scorpio Sky vs. Shawn Spears. This match was originally scheduled for last week\’s Dynamite, but was postponed after Scorpio Sky exposed to someone with COVID-19.
    • Tay Conti vs. Red Velvet
    • FTW Champion Brian Cage vs. Matt Sydal

Plus, we will hear from new AEW World Tag Team Champions The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes, who lost the TNT Championship to Darby Allin at Full Gear.

It\’s worth noting that Tony Khan put out this cryptic tweet promoting Dynamite. The AEW President is teasing \”massive surprises\” – so massive that \”the balance of power in wrestling will shift tonight.\”

  • AEW Video Game In Development By Yuke\’s Co. Ltd.

All Elite Wrestling has announced not one, but three new AEW video games. AEW Games has provided the first official details regarding an AEW console game, an \’Elite General Manager\’ game as well as AEW Casino: Double or Nothing.

The big news is that the AEW console game being developed by Yuke\’s Co. Ltd, the company that developed WWE\’s video games for nearly twenty years. The AEW console game will be available on current and next generation consoles.

Yukes is the studio behind the classic SmackDown! games and the \’WWE 2K\’ series up until WWE 2K19. WWE and Yukes parted ways in 2019 due to creative differences. WWE went on to partner with Visual Concepts for the release of WWE 2K20, a game riddled with bugs that flopped so hard that this year\’s 2K21 installment was scrapped entirely.

Yukes also developed games for New Japan Pro Wrestling (2005, 2007) and UFC (2019-2012). In May 2019, the company announced plans to produce a wrestling-related video game to compete with WWE\’s 2K franchise. (More on the split).

  • Karrion Kross Could Return To NXT From Injury \”Any Second\”

Karrion Kross fans will not have to wait much longer for his return to WWE\’s NXT brand. Kross has been out of action since August, when he suffered a separated shoulder during the main event of NXT TakeOver: XXX. Kross captured the NXT Championship at that show, but was forced to surrender the title just days later due to the injury.

The undefeated star provided an update on his condition this week. \”I feel absurdly stronger now than I did even before July. I have not squandered this time away,\” he said. \”And I see no point in returning if I’m not coming back even stronger than I was to begin with.\”

He then put the NXT roster on notice and warned that he could return \”any second\” – even when people least expect it.

\”See you all again when the T I M E is right. Which as you know… could be any second. Or maybe when you least expect it.”

He also posted this cryptic tweet this week:

    https://twitter.com/WWEKarrionKross/status/1325876558540705793

Karrion Kross holds an undefeated record in NXT. There is no question that he will be a huge threat to whoever stands before him upon his return. Now feeling stronger than ever, he has something to prove once again after having his championship taken from him just as he reached the top of the mountain in NXT.

The message was accompanied by a video of Kross training hard in the gym.

  • AEW\’s Next PPV, Countdown To Full Gear Viewership, Kingston Frustrated

AEW has released the first promo video hyping Revolution, the company\’s next pay-per-view event scheduled for Saturday, February 27th. The main event will likely be AEW World Champion Jon Moxley defending against World Title Eliminator Tournament winner Kenny Omega.

Since AEW pay-per-views take quarterly, AEW typically presents special editions of Dynamite midway through the 3-month breaks. Previous events have included FyterFest and Bash at the Beach. AEW president Tony Khan noted that \’Beach Bash\’ will take place some time in January.

The AEW: Countdown to Full Gear special that aired on TNT this past Friday night at 11pm (Eastern) averaged 245,000 viewers and did a 0.09 in the Adults 18-49 demographic. This viewership is down from September\’s Countdown to AEW All Out special, which did 357,000 viewers and 0.14 in the demo. However, it\’s not an apples-to-apples comparison. The All Out countdown show aired Saturday at 5:30PM (EST) just hours before the PPV.

Eddie Kingston is still processing his loss to AEW World Champion Jon Moxley at Saturday\’s Full Gear pay-per-view. After losing the hard-fought \”I Quit\” match, it looks like Kingston broke his phone out of frustration.

  • Tony Khan Hypes Full Gear On Latest AEW Unrestricted Podcast

AEW President Tony Khan made a special appearance on the this week\’s edition of the AEW Unrestricted podcast. With AEW Full Gear just days away, the conversation focused on Saturday night\’s pay-per-view.

Tony Khan spoke about which match he thinks will steal the show and which match has been brewing for years – well before the launch of All Elite Wrestling. Here are some highlights of what he said about:

MJF vs. Chris Jericho: “The Inner Circle possibly with MJF as a member is unthinkable, and the Inner Circle definitely would be the biggest force, not just in AEW, but I think the Inner Circle would be the talk of professional wrestling.”

Kenny Omega & \”Hangman\” Adam Page: \”For me, this has been a long time coming. I’ve wanted to do the Kenny Hangman match on PPV for a long time.”

FTR vs The Young Bucks: \”This babyface team and this heel team, it\’s been built up and talked about for years, long before there was an AEW, long before I knew I was gonna get into the wrestling business, and I\’m just really proud that AEW\’s promoting this match and that we\’re having it here.\”

Eddie Kingston: \”Since he came in this Summer, he’s become one of the top people in AEW and one of the top people in wrestling, and he’s very effective as a wrestler; he’s very effective as a speaker; he’s very effective as a leader; and I think he could be a great champion for us.”

Other topics discussed include Chris Jericho\’s original pitch for Le Dinner Debonair, what inspired Eric Bischoff’s return to Dynamite and AEW\’s decision to move Orange Cassidy vs John Silver on to the main PPV card this weekend.

  • Matt Riddle Spoke To Vince McMahon About Heat With Certain People In WWE

Matt Riddle was recently called up to the main roster after a successful run in NXT that included a tag title reign with Timothy Thatcher.

Riddle has a reputation for being a polarizing figure behind the scenes in WWE. He rubs some people the wrong way. Brock Lesnar and Goldberg did not appreciate Riddle calling them out. Riddle was accused of sexual assault, resulting in a (still pending) lawsuits against Riddle and WWE.

Seth Rollins is the latest big name to take issue with the Original Bro. After speaking highly about Riddle in recent years, Rollins recently stated on WWE programming interview that he has no plans on working with Riddle in WWE. Rollins stated in mid-October, \”I’ve got no interest in facing Matt Riddle at any point in my career so he can go to RAW as far as I’m concerned.\”

The heat between Seth Rollins and Matt Riddle might stem from Riddle\’s wife body shaming Rollins\’ wife, Becky Lynch, on social media. Seemingly out of the blue, Riddle\’s wife Riddle’s wife Lisa posted a photo of Becky Lynch\’s backside, calling her \”skinny, jiggly fat\” and suggest she needs to squat in relation to pretty much nothing

    \"\"/

During a recent interview with Sportskeeda, Matt Riddle revealed he spoke to WWE boss Vince McMahon a few weeks ago about the Rollins situation.

\”To answer your question, yes, some people I have heat with,\” said Riddle. \”But most of it’s just high school, catty, ‘He said this’, people who just can’t take a joke or a work.\”

At the end of the day, Vince McMahon signs the checks in WWE and Matt Riddle will do his best to be a good independent contractor.

“I was in Vince McMahon’s office just three weeks ago, before this thing broke out,\” Riddle said. \”I was in headquarters talking to him – and, yeah, we mentioned the heat I have with certain people but, at the end of the day, he signs the checks, he makes it happen for me and they’re in control, not the talent.”

He continued by saying that if Vince is happy and he can help WWE make money, then he\’s pulling his weight and he doesn\’t see a problem.

She wrote to her subscribers, \”I\’m truly sorry for the pain I\’ve caused and miscommunication, I am currently unwell. I\’m also sorry that I wasn\’t able to get this out before your monthly subscription charge.\”

\”I wanted to take this time to say I am no longer a professional wrestler and am currently taking a break from social media. It\’s been a very hard decision to make but please understand.. When I am well, I will try to fulfill any obligations that have missed.\”

  • WWE Shortens Matt Riddle\’s Ring Name

Weeks after being drafted to WWE\’s Raw brand, Matt Riddle is the latest WWE wrestler to have his name shortened. Matt Riddle is now known as simply, Riddle. The change was made official on Thursday.

    \"\"/

As you\’d expect, fans complained on social media about the change. There were memes, including several likening Riddle to \’Batman\’ character, The Riddler.

The Original Bro must have seen the outcry, because he sent out a tweet assuring people that \’its all good\’ and he actually prefers the streamlined name.

Matt Riddle is just the latest wrestler to have his ring name slimmed down by WWE. Other active stars who have received the same treatment include Big E (Langston), Andrade (\”Cien\” Almas), (Buddy) Murphy and (Antonio) Cesaro.

Riddle lost to Sheamus on this week\’s RAW in a match to qualify for \’Team Raw\’ at Survivor Series.According to a report by Fightful, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon was said to be very impressed with Riddle\’s performance in the match. Business Outlook

    • The Company continues to adapt its business to the changing environment with investment to enhance content production value and further fan engagement, including an incremental $22 – $27 million investment in the fourth quarter (4Q20 vs. 3Q20), primarily associated with the creation of WWE ThunderDome, and increased personnel expenses as employees return from furlough

October 29, 2020 04:10 PM Eastern Daylight Time

STAMFORD, Conn.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–WWE (NYSE: WWE) today announced financial results for its third quarter ended September 30, 2020.

“Our third quarter financial performance was strong and reflected our ongoing creativity in a challenging environment,” said Vince McMahon, WWE Chairman & CEO. “We continue to adapt our business, as demonstrated by the creation of WWE ThunderDome, focusing on increasing audience interaction and engagement to support the value of our content globally.”

Kristina Salen, WWE Chief Financial Officer, added “In the quarter, we delivered revenue of $221.6 million and Adjusted OIBDA of $84.3 million based on increased rights fees for the Company’s flagship programming. With $638 million in cash and short-term investments at quarter-end, we believe WWE has substantial capital resources to manage challenges that may lie ahead and to deliver on key strategic initiatives.”

    Third-Quarter Consolidated Results*

    * (All comparisons are versus the prior year period unless stated otherwise)

Revenue was $221.6 million, an increase of 19% or $35.3 million, primarily driven by the growth of core content rights fees in the Media segment. This revenue increase was partially offset by the loss of ticket and merchandise sales that resulted from the continued cancellation, postponement and relocation of live events due to public health concerns related to the COVID-19 outbreak that began in mid-March 2020.

Operating Income was $63.4 million, an increase of nearly 9x or $57.0 million, primarily due to increased revenue from the growth of core content rights fees as well as a decline in event-related production expenses, and short-term cost reductions implemented as a result of COVID-19. The increase in operating income was partially offset by $5.5 million in severance expense resulting from a reduction in force due to COVID-19. The Company’s Operating income margin increased to 28.6%.

Adjusted OIBDA (which excludes stock compensation) was $84.3 million, an increase of more than 2x or $58.9 million. Adjusted OIBDA excludes $5.5 million in severance expense (described above). The Company’s Adjusted OIBDA margin increased to 38.0%.

Income Tax Provision was $13.0 million, an increase of $20.1 million. The increase was driven by stronger operating performance coupled with an $8.2 million decrease in tax benefits associated with the vesting of share-based compensation. The effective tax rate in the quarter was 21%.

Net Income was $48.2 million, or $0.57 per diluted share, an increase from $5.8 million, or $0.06 per diluted share, in the third quarter 2019, primarily reflecting stronger operating performance partially offset by the impact of the decrease in tax benefits as discussed above. Current period results also reflected after-tax unrealized gains of $5.2 million primarily related to the value of the Company’s DraftKings investment, partially offset by $4.3 million in after-tax severance expense (described above). Excluding these items, Adjusted Net Income5 was $47.3 million, or $0.56 per diluted share.

Cash flows generated by operating activities were $116.8 million, an increase from $3.2 million, driven by improved working capital, which reflects the timing of collections associated with our large-scale international events, and stronger operating performance.

Free Cash Flow was $110.8 million, an increase from a $16.4 million use of cash, primarily due to the change in operating cash flow and, to a lesser extent, a reduction in capital expenditures.6

Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments were $638 million as of September 30, 2020, which includes $200 million the Company borrowed under its revolving line of credit during the second quarter 2020.

    Return of Capital to Shareholders

The Company paid $9.3 million in dividends to shareholders during the third quarter. There were no share repurchases under the Company’s existing share repurchase program.

    Basis of Presentation

For the third quarter of 2020, the Company’s consolidated pre-tax results included the impact of $6.7 million of unrealized gains primarily related to the value of the Company’s DraftKings investment, partially offset by $5.5 million in severance expense. For the nine month period ended September 30, 2020, the Company’s consolidated pre-tax results included $13.1 million of incremental costs related to the finance lease for the Company’s new headquarters, $5.5 million in severance expense, and a net gain of $2.9 million related to certain equity investments, which included unrealized holding gains of $14.4 million primarily related to the value of the Company’s DraftKings investment partially offset by $11.5 million of impairment charges. As the underlying market value of our marketable equity investments fluctuate, WWE is exposed to future earnings volatility to the extent WWE continues to hold these investments. A reconciliation of Net Income to Adjusted Net Income for the three and nine month ended September 30, 2020 and 2019 can be found in the supplemental schedule on page 13 of this release.

    Results by Operating Segment*

    * (All comparisons are versus the prior year period unless stated otherwise)

    Media

Revenue was $201.0 million, an increase of 38% or $54.9 million, primarily driven by the growth of domestic core content rights fees for the Company’s flagship programs Raw and SmackDown and, to a lesser extent, the growth in WWE Network subscription revenue as well as increased sales of advertising and sponsorship across platforms. These factors were partially offset by the unfavorable timing of episodic series for programs, such as Total Divas and Miz & Mrs., as well as the timing and performance of WWE Studios’ portfolio of releases, as reflected in “Other.”

WWE Network’s average paid subscribers were 1.6 million, an increase of 6%, marking the first quarterly increase since the first quarter 2019.

Operating income was $94.5 million, an increase of nearly 2x or $61.5 million, primarily due to the growth in revenue and, to a lesser extent, a reduction in operating expenses.

Adjusted OIBDA was $101.7 million, representing an increase of nearly 1.5x or $60.2 million.

    Live Events

Revenue was $0.7 million, a decrease of 97% or $22.5 million, resulting from the absence of live events and a corresponding decline in ticket sales in North American and international markets. (The third quarter 2019 had 67 events in North America and 7 events in international markets.)

Operating income reflected a loss of $4.4 million, a decrease of 26% or $0.9 million, as the decline in North America and international ticket sales (as described above) was partially offset by a reduction in event-related expenses.

Adjusted OIBDA reflected a loss of $4.1 million, representing a decrease of 41% or $1.2 million.

    Consumer Products

Revenue was $19.9 million, an increase of 17% or $2.9 million, reflecting increased merchandise sales at the Company’s eCommerce site, WWE Shop, and higher video game and toy royalties. Increased sales at the Company’s eCommerce site substantially offset the absence of venue merchandise sales resulting from the absence of ticketed-audience events in the quarter (as described above).

Operating income was $5.4 million, an increase of 59% or $2.0 million, reflecting the growth in revenue driven by higher royalties and increased sales at the Company’s eCommerce site, which more than offset the decrease of venue-based merchandise sales resulting from the absence of events.

Adjusted OIBDA was $5.6 million, representing an increase of 40% or $1.6 million.

    COVID-19 Actions and Business Outlook4

The spread of COVID-19 and related government mandates have impacted WWE’s business as the Company has been directed to cancel, postpone or relocate its live events beginning in mid-March 2020. The Company continues to adapt its business to the changing environment with investment to enhance content production value and further fan engagement. Management anticipates $40 – $45 million in incremental fourth quarter expenses (4Q20 vs. 3Q20) due to $18 million in production incentives (recognized in the third quarter) and due to $22 – $27 million in ongoing incremental production expenses associated with the creation of the WWE Thunderdome and incremental personnel expenses associated with employees returning from furlough, both of which are expected to continue in the coming year. Management is currently developing its 2021 annual operating and strategic plans, and it remains challenging to quantify the potential impact of COVID-19 on its business, and the financial impact to the Company may be material. Accordingly, management previously withdrew its full year 2020 guidance and based on sustained economic uncertainties is not reinstating guidance at this time.

Management continues to believe that WWE has significant long-term opportunities and is well positioned to deliver on its strategic initiatives.

    Non-GAAP Measures

The Company defines Adjusted OIBDA as operating income excluding depreciation and amortization, stock-based compensation expense, certain impairment charges and other non-recurring material items that otherwise would impact the comparability of results between periods. Adjusted OIBDA includes amortization and depreciation expenses directly related to supporting the operations of our segments, including content production asset amortization, depreciation and amortization of costs related to content delivery and technology assets utilized for the WWE Network, as well as amortization of right-of-use assets related to finance leases of equipment used to produce and broadcast our live events. The Company believes the presentation of Adjusted OIBDA is relevant and useful for investors because it allows them to view the Company’s segment performance in the same manner as the primary method used by management to evaluate segment performance and to make decisions regarding the allocation of resources. Additionally, the Company believes that Adjusted OIBDA is a primary measure used by media investors, analysts and peers for comparative purposes.

Adjusted OIBDA is a non-GAAP financial measure and may be different than similarly titled non-GAAP financial measures used by other companies. WWE views operating income as the most directly comparable GAAP measure. Adjusted OIBDA (and other non-GAAP measures such as Adjusted Operating IncomeAdjusted Net Income and Adjusted EPS which are defined as the GAAP measures excluding certain nonrecurring, material items that impact the comparability between periods) should not be considered in isolation from, or as a substitute for, operating income, net income, EPS or other GAAP measures, such as operating cash flow, as an indicator of operating performance or liquidity.

The Company defines Free Cash Flow as net cash provided by operating activities less cash used for capital expenditures. WWE views net cash provided by operating activities as the most directly comparable GAAP measure. Although it is not a recognized measure of liquidity under U.S. GAAP, Free Cash Flow provides useful information regarding the amount of cash WWE’s continuing business generates after capital expenditures and is available for reinvesting in the business, debt service, and payment of dividends.

WWE\’s decision to revive the classic WCW Halloween Havoc theme brought the NXT brand a rare viewership victory over AEW Dynamite.

  • The Young Bucks Want To See AEW Ice Cream Bars

The Young Bucks are known for being masters of merchandising. Even before the launch of AEW, where they both serve as Executive Vice Presidents, the Bucks have made a small fortune selling t-shirts sporting their original designed. Their prowess for moving \’merch\’ even earned Nick Jackson the moniker, \”Merch Freak.\”

During a recent interview with Hollywood Life, Nick and Matt Jackson discussed the process behind creating their popular shirts, which items they won\’t put their name on and the possibility of AEW ice cream bars.

    AEW Ice Cream Bars

\”Sky’s the limit with the merchandise,\” said Matt. \”I am so open-minded with all of that. It really helps that my wife is in charge with all of that, so I can wake up in the middle of the night and elbow her and tell her, ‘Hey sweetie, I have this great idea for a t-shirt!’ And she will be so bothered by me.”

They joked that they say \”yes\” to everything as long as it makes money, but Nick did clarify that they won\’t market anything related to cigarettes or alcohol. The Bucks are men of faith and have been described as \’straight-edge sons of a minister.\’

“I think we would have to say no to something like cigarettes or alcohol. “But we had shot glasses in [Ring Of Honor] at one point, and it didn’t even make sense.”

Matt then floated the idea that he\’d like to see AEW offer ice cream bars, similar to the classic WWE ice cream bars many longtime fans remember from their childhood.

\”… I would love to have some type of AEW ice cream bar. I remember fondly in the summer when the ice cream man would come, and I would get the Good Humor Hulk Hogan ice cream bar. I don’t know how much of a possibility it would be, but I put the idea out there, at least.\”

WWE and Good Humor introduced ice cream \”cookie sandwiches\” earlier this year, but they are a far cry from the originals:

  • Thunder Rosa Under Contract With The NWA Through 2021

Thunder Rosa is not joining WWE any time soon, despite reports to the contrary.

Earlier this week, Serena Deeb defeated Thunder Rosa to capture the NWA Women\’s Championship. Dave Meltzer Wrestling Observer stated that the title change reaffirmed his belief that Thunder Rosa is in fact WWE bound.

Meltzer wrote on his website\’s message board, \”I think Rosa is going to WWE. I was told 2-3 weeks ago that Deeb was winning and Rosa was going to WWE and the first part just happened. If Rosa was going to AEW, she could keep her NWA title.\”

NWA President Billy Corgan has commented on Thunder Rosa\’s status on Thursday morning. He wrote on Instagram, that Thunder Rosa is not leaving the NWA because \”She’s under contract thru 2021 and there’s a reason for that (it’s called excellence and faith).\”

Corgan also took a dig at reports stating that Thunder Rosa was headed to WWE soon. \”You have to love press and media reports that don’t contact the company she is under contract to but instead listen to someone who has my email address but doesn\’t write and ask.\”

Thunder Rosa addressed the rumors of her next move with two videos posted on social media. As seen below, she pulled down her shorts to reveal, \”AEW? WWE? NWA?\” written on her hip.
