Eric Bischoff Details What Led To His WWE Departure After Latest Run

  • Eric Bischoff Details What Led To His WWE Departure After Latest Run

Eric Bischoff has opened up on his departure from WWE after serving as the SmackDown Executive Director for a few months in 2019.

Bischoff has been replaced by Bruce Prichard as the Executive Director of SmackDown. Bischoff did so a bonus episode of “83 Weeks” available on Patreon only.

Bischoff told a story about how the idea of him coming back to the company started after having breakfast with Bruce Prichard, whose idea it was. This led to him being set up with a casual meeting with Vince McMahon at WWE HQ.

At this point, he wasn’t convinced that coming back full-time was something that he wanted to do nor need it for financial gain. After the meeting, several weeks later, he got a second meeting where he was offered the job.

“I didn’t think about it enough, I had to do some internal inventory and make sure that I was mentally and emotionally prepared to make a change as drastic as picking up, moving all my sh*t from Wyoming  … not all of it.

He later stated, “I suspected that there was a good chance that it would be a short-term relationship. I didn’t think it was gonna be quite as short-term as it WAS, but in my own mind I put kind of a two-year ticker on it.”

Bischoff continued that news of him getting the job with WWE was made official within 24 hours of him agreeing to the job.

He talked about how his role was to work with every department related to SmackDown. He made it clear that McMahon told him at the start that Bischoff wasn’t to be involved with creative but to just oversee the process.

Bischoff credits the relationship not working because he wasn’t prepared for the radical change in scenery nor fully understanding his ability to adapt to the situation upon starting his job at WWE.

Bischoff stated that he felt like he was drowning due to a number of things like SmackDown moving to FOX and the uncertainty of the brand split. He also praised Paul Heyman for being able to handle and overcome challenges of the workload in WWE including being on someone else’s schedule.

“I knew about six weeks in, eight weeks in, it just wasn’t going to work out. I knew I wasn’t fitting and it wasn’t a secret. It just wasn’t right,” he went on to add. “Vince wanted it to work. I believe that. I absolutely believe that. There was no reason for him to set me up this way. The opportunity that he gave me was amazing.”

Bischoff thinks that both he and McMahon knew it wasn’t working out. He also stated that he was disappointed because he didn’t live up to Vince’s expectations.

Finally, regarding his dismissal, he recalled being told on a Tuesday by someone not named McMahon in the office that the two sides were going to part ways.

“I had to fit in the system and I wasn’t able to do it in the timeline it needed to be done.”

  • New WWE RAW Commercial Includes Samoa Joe\’s Concussion Spot

WWE has released a new commercial to promote Monday Night RAW on the USA Network that features Samoa Joe.

The \”RAW: Must Be Monday\” commercial also features Ricochet, RAW Women\’s Champion Becky Lynch, WWE United States Champion Andrade, Charlotte Flair, Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley.

It turns out that this is the same commercial where Joe suffered a concussion while filming it. WWE Backstage analyst Ryan Satin noted the news on Twitter

The commercial was filmed back in early February. At the time, it was reported Joe suffered the concussion while taking a bad table bump during a commercial shoot. You can check it out here:

Joe was given his first 30-day suspension for his first violation of the WWE Wellness Policy a month ago but is now eligible to return to the ring. The suspension expired last week.

Despite the fact that the suspension is up, there’s been no word yet as to whether Joe has been medically cleared to compete. This was a significant concussion for the pro wrestling veteran as it marked his second concussion in less than 1 month.

He also suffered a broken thumb back in September and he didn\’t return to in-ring action until late December. WWE even had him be part of the commentary team during this time in order to keep him on television.

The other concussion took place back on the January 27th episode of RAW while doing a dive. However, he was back in action just one week later until he suffered the second concussion at the commercial shoot.

  • Edge Talks In-Ring Training With The Revival For Return, Bike Accident Leading To Comeback

WWE Hall of Famer Edge did a recent interview with ESPN to promote WrestleMania 36 where he spoke about a wide range of topics.

During the interview, he discussed making his return to in-ring action. It turns out that the moment that it dawned on him that he could make a return was when he filmed an episode of Sheamus’ workout series on YouTube.

He was on a mountain bike and was going down a hill in order to hit a jump. He wiped out at high speeds and had cuts but rolled up on his feet. He went to see a family doctor and spine specialist to make sure that his neck was fine considering that spinal stenosis is what led to his pro wrestling retirement in 2011.

Despite the incident, he felt fine. After getting word from the doctors that his neck wasn’t further injured, it started to make him think that he could wrestle again.

After making an appointment in Birmingham, Alabama with Dr. James Andrews\’ team and Dr. Andrew Cordover, \”that\’s when we started to realize this could actually happen.\”

He got the green light from WWE\’s medical team in order to be medically cleared. That’s when he contacted WWE and started training with his wife, WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix, and The Revival\’s Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder.

\”I talked to [Triple H], and I said, \’I can\’t go to a ring anywhere because people will start seeing me. I can\’t go to the PC.\’ So they sent me a ring,\” Edge said. \”I got a warehouse space, and I set up a ring and basically had my own personal \’Field of Dreams,\’ and I just got in there and got to work.

Thankfully, I\’m married to another Hall of Famer who can pick up and body slam me, which you can\’t say for a lot of wives. The Revival, they both live in Asheville, so they\’d come, and they\’d get in there with me, and they\’d put me through my paces.”

Edge noted how he was keeping up with them and wasn\’t tired or sore. That’s when he knew that a return to action was going to happen and at a level that he wanted.

He made it known that he didn’t want to come back and be anything less than what he was but knew he had to work differently as he would have different limitations.

  • Video: Roman Reigns Explains His Decision To Not Compete At WWE WrestleMania

Roman Reigns was slated to challenge Goldberg for the Universal Title at WrestleMania 36 this weekend.

However, Ryan Satin reported last week that Reigns had pulled out of the contest due to his concerns about the coronavirus as he has a weakened immune system with his leukemia battle.

Reigns posted a video on Instagram where he confirmed that he has indeed pulled out of WWE WrestleMania 36. After talking about how he noticed how social distancing has made people nicer and kinder, he made his comments about the decision.

    Roman Reigns Confirms The News

“You already know what’s going on, it’s all over the news, the dirtsheets, whatever you wanna call them that I pulled out of WrestleMania. It’s funny because, for years, people were like ‘don’t show up to WrestleMania, we don’t want you in it.”

Reigns stated that there was a handful of people that didn’t want him there but the moment that he makes a choice for him and his family, he gets called a coward or a sissy.

“You don’t know the whole story, all you know is what you think. You don’t know what else is going on in my life. You don’t know if I have newborns, if I have family in my household, older family.”

Reigns stated that he’s sorry to his fans for not working the show but did note that he was in Orlando last week for the tapings and made a decision for himself and his family.

WWE has yet to confirm Reigns is out of the match and still promoting it. That will have to change sometime this week.

Reigns’ comments about WrestleMania are around the 2:30 mark in the video you can watch here.

  • Becky Lynch Among WWE Stars Name Who Would Be On Their Wrestling Mount Rushmore

On Saturday, the topic of who would be on your Mount Rushmore of wrestling was trending on social media.

The likes of WWE RAW Women’s Champion Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Jason Jordan, Shayna Baszler, Seth Rollins, and Liv Morgan gave their take about this topic.

Just like with who is the GOAT (greatest of all-time) in wrestling, it’s an opinionated take as most people have a different list.

Most can agree upon the likes of Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, and The Rock but typically the fourth name is divided. Here’s the list:

    • Becky Lynch on Superstars – Brock Lesnar, The Rock, Hulk Hogan, and John Cena
    • Lynch on purest wrestlers – Ric Flair, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, and Kurt Angle.
    • Seth Rollins – Steve Austin, The Rock, Hulk Hogan, and Vince McMahon.
    • Charlotte – Andrade, herself, Kurt Angle, Ric Flair.
    • Jason Jordan – Kurt Angle, Mr. Perfect, Steve Austin, and Eddie Guerrero.
    • Shayna Bazler – Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Bruno Sammartino, and Steve Austin.

On the show, Gulak ended up beating Nakamura. As a result, Bryan will challenge Sami Zayn for the strap at WrestleMania 36.

WWE presents the WrestleMania 36 pay-per-view event as a two-night event on Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5 in Orlando, Florida at the WWE Performance Center.

Title Match At WrestleMania 36 Reportedly Changed, Another Star Pulled

  • Matt Riddle On Goldberg Needing New WrestleMania Opponent, Date For Next WWE TV Taping

Matt Riddle On Goldberg Needing New WrestleMania Opponent

Matt Riddle gave his take on WWE Universal Champion Goldberg needing a new opponent at WrestleMania 36.

It’s been reported that Roman Reigns had decided not to work the match against the legendary pro wrestler at the show, which was taped on Wednesday and Thursday.

The reason for his decision was due to the concern over the coronavirus considering his battle with leukemia. WWE has yet to announce Reigns’ replacement.

Riddle took to Twitter where he wrote the following:

Date For Next WWE TV Taping

For those who are wondering, WWE has taped upcoming episodes of RAW, NXT, and SmackDown through April 6th, which would be the post-WrestleMania episode for RAW.

WWE plans to return for another set of tapings on Friday, April 10 at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando for the episode of SmackDown that night, which will be the post-WrestleMania 36 edition of the show.

The WWE 205 Live episode for that night will likely be taped as well. The belief is that WWE tape post-WrestleMania shows from this same venue.

It should be noted that for now, WWE will be allowed to tape episodes on that date despite Orange County, Florida making the \”stay at home\” order that went into effect on Thursday night to help slow the spread of the coronavirus.

  • Title Match At WrestleMania 36 Reportedly Changed, Another Star Pulled

In the past 24 hours, news of several changes made to the WrestleMania 36 card has surfaced online.

The coronavirus epidemic has forced the company to change things up with their biggest event of the year despite their efforts to do the show they initially wanted this week.

On Friday, it was reported that The Miz had been pulled from the show due to illness which impacted what WWE had planned for Miz and John Morrison at WrestleMania 36 in their latest title defense of the SmackDown Tag Team Championships.

Miz and Morrison were supposed to defend the titles against the winners of New Day vs. The Usos on Friday Night SmackDown. Dave Meltzer is reporting that Morrison will face one of the Usos in a ladder match instead at WrestleMania 36.

Also, despite it being reported elsewhere, Asuka and Cesaro both worked WrestleMania with no health issues. For those who are wondering, Edge vs. Randy Orton in a Last Man Standing match was successfully taped this week.

Finally, PWInsider reported that Buddy Murphy was indeed sick and didn\’t come to any TV tapings this week including WrestleMania 36. It was noted by Meltzer that no one sick was allowed around even if they had a cough or a stuffy nose at the tapings.

The changes started earlier this week when news broke earlier this week that Rey Mysterio and Dana Brooke were off the plans for the show due to self quarantining.

Then, it was reported that Roman Reigns had decided to not work his scheduled match against WWE Universal Champion Bill Goldberg despite being in the building when the show was taped.

Also, Drew Gulak vs. Shinsuke Nakamura is booked. The stipulation of this contest is that if Gulak wins, then Daniel Bryan gets a title shot from WWE Intercontinental Champion Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 36

WWE holds this show from Orlando, Florida at the WWE Performance Center. As usual, fans should expect more matches and segments to be revealed this afternoon for SmackDown.

    Qualifying Matches

    \"\"

Aliyah vs. Xia Li and Candice LeRae vs. Kayden Carter in qualifying matches for the Ladder Match to determine a new #1 contender for the NXT Women’s Title took place on this show.

Li was attacked backstage and replaced by Io Shirai, who went over on Aliyah while LeRae went over Carter. Chelsea Green, Mia Yim, and Tegan Nox have already secured spots in the bout.

This match was slated to take place at the NXT TakeOver: Tampa Bay special on WrestleMania 36 weekend. However, that event was canceled. Now, this Ladder Match is slated to take place on an upcoming episode of NXT TV.

NXT Women’s Champion Rhea Ripley will make her next title defense against Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania 36.

Thus, the winner of this match will face the new #1 contender down the line at a date that has yet to be announced.

    Matt Riddle vs. Roderick Strong

    \"Matt
    Matt Riddle

Matt Riddle vs. Roderick Strong in a singles bout was the biggest match on the card of this interesting show.

It was exactly what you would expect to see in a hard-hitting affair. This seemed to be and played out as a match with two top names that could deliver a fine match. Riddle won the match.

It appeared that WWE is building up to a rematch between The Undisputed Era and Riddle & Strong for the NXT Tag Team Titles.

While it won’t take place at NXT TakeOver: Tampa, don’t be surprised to see it play out on NXT television.

After the match, two unknown stars managed by Malcolm Bivens came out and attacked Riddle.

    Adam Cole Sends Message

    \"Adam
    Adam Cole (Photo: WWE)

WWE NXT Champion Adam Cole had a special message for fans on this show. He cut a promo from his phone while poolside on vacation.

He talked about while poolside, he had been thinking about his altercation with the Velveteen Dream and how it got him flustered but then he was thinking why he would ever be flustered.

Cole then listed off his accomplishments in WWE from being the first-ever North American Champion, the first winner of the WarGames Match in NXT, and now the longest-reigning NXT Champion.

Cole stated that Dream hasn’t done anything to earn a shot at him or his title. However, The Undisputed Era wants a shot at the experience and vowed that Dream would suffer a loss to Bobby Fish when they wrestle.

    Tyler Breeze vs. Austin Theory

    \"Austin

WWE didn’t waste any time in getting to in-ring competition with Tyler Breeze vs. Austin Theory in a singles match.

After a few graphics hyping what was on the show, we went straight to the match. Just like with RAW and SmackDown, WWE had the hard camera showing the entrance ramp in the background.

This comes after the low rated edition of NXT which featured no live matches but rather three video packages last week.

As seen on the show, Breeze ended up going over, which some could see as an interesting move considering Breeze hasn’t been used in a prominent role since Fandango was sidelined due to injury.

It was a fine opener with both guys shining. Theory is still someone to keep your eye on but he’s still missing something that’s keeping him from being a main time player.

    Feuding Three Ways

    \"Keith
    Keith Lee

The continuation of the ongoing program between NXT North American Champion Keith Lee, Damien Priest and Donovan Dijak took place on this show.

It all started with Lee apologizing to Dijak for thinking that he was the one who attacked him two weeks ago, which led to Lee laying him out at the time. Dijak claimed that Lee took the food off the plate of his family.

This led to Priest coming out to the ring and saying that his eyes are on the prize which is the North American Title. He said that his name will live forever but he needs the title to do so.

Lee said that them fighting over the title doesn’t matter because the champion is standing right here. Priest tried to attack them but Lee and Dijac fought him off. Dijak took them both out with an outside dive.

With NXT TakeOver: Tampa being off, it’s just a matter of time before a three-way is booked.

Triple H Addresses Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa

    \"Triple
    \’The Game\’ Triple H. Image Credit: WWE.com

Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa had to answer to Triple H. In the final segment of the show, Triple H began to cut a promo about this feud before Ciampa came out.

Ciampa told Triple H to bring out Gargano and that everything has been said that needs to be said. Triple H told them that there will be no physicality. Gargano said that he doesn’t understand why he was fined when Ciampa started the brawl two weeks ago. He refused to get into the ring.

Triple H said that he’s the reason that both of them are still here because William Regal wanted to fire them. Triple H stated that he gets their beef but it needs to end.

He said that it should end on the biggest stage in the world. Gargano said it should’ve ended last year but Ciampa broke his neck. Gargano said in two weeks, they can finish it once and for all. Triple H said that he will find an empty building and a referee there to say it’s over.

When this is over then it’s over. One will walk out and one will leave. Triple H said that if their feud continues after this match then both of them will be gone from NXT.

At the end of the segment, there was a teaser video for the arrival of Killer Kross.

  • Seth Rollins Talks Why He’s Happy His WrestleMania 36 Match Is Taking Place At Performance Center

Seth Rollins made an appearance on WWE\’s The Bump where he talked about a wide range of topics including his match at WrestleMania 36.

Rollins is slated to take on Kevin Owens in a singles match at this show. Due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, WWE had to move the show from the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida.

This is where Rollins talked about how the relocation of venues “is maybe the best thing that could have happened to this match between myself, and Kevin Owens.”

Rollins continued by stating, “There’s so much history that Kevin and I both had in NXT and in this building. I sort of detailed it a few nights ago on Raw. But, it really adds a different element to our match.

Though we won’t have a live crowd there, we’ll have millions of people watching around the world, and that’s very exciting to know that we’re going to have this match here, where it all started.”

Rollins stated that he was in attendance the first day that Owens had his tryout match and he watched Ownes earn his job after he allowed that opportunity because of the sacrifices he made.

He added that to be able to put a nail on this thing with Owens where it all started is going to be a special thing for him.

  • Brie Bella Expresses Concern About Daniel Bryan Wrestling During Coronavirus Outbreak

Brie Bella has opened up about her husband, Daniel Bryan, working WWE events down in Orlando, Florida despite there being an outbreak of the coronavirus not only in the United States but also around the world.

She did so on the Bella Twins\’ latest podcast. She stated that Bryan is still working the TV tapings and while she’s glad that he’s working, it makes her really nervous.

“My husband has an autoimmune disease, he also fought asthma really bad when he was young. He was always sick when he was a kid and I’ll admit … I lost sleep last night. I was king of like, ‘ugh.’ I’m grateful my husband is still employed, but at the same time, I’m really scared that he’s just out there. I just pray so much for him that he stays healthy and all that, but it’s like this weird tug-of-war.\”

Bella continued by noting that he’s in Orlando and when he comes back home, he will have to stay at a hotel and be checked out by their Naturopath, Dr. Jane, in order to see if he has any symptoms before he comes home to them.

\”That could be weeks, and when he left yesterday or the day before, I was just like, ‘It could be three weeks until I see you’ and it’s just sad but thank goodness for technology, FaceTime and all that.\”

WWE has taped several upcoming episodes of RAW, NXT, and SmackDown in addition to taping both nights of WrestleMania 36 since last Saturday.

  • Edge vs. Randy Orton Confirmed For WrestleMania 36

After several weeks of speculation, WWE has indeed confirmed Edge vs. Randy Orton for WrestleMania 36. The company did so on Monday’s episode of RAW as Orton accepted Edge\’s challenge to a match at the biggest event of the year.

This came after Edge addressed Orton’s attack on him and his wife on RAW last week. Edge\’s challenge to the former fellow WWE Champion was a Last Man Standing Match.

A few weeks ago on RAW saw Orton attack Edge’s wife and fellow WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix in the final segment of the show.

This match was expected as Edge has been off TV for several weeks after receiving the beatdown by Randy Orton after making his return to the ring in the 30-Man Royal Rumble Match.

WWE presents the WrestleMania 36 pay-per-view event as a two-night event on Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5 in Orlando, Florida.

WWE Has Talent Roster Under Lockdown During Taping Schedule

  • WWE Has Talent Roster Under Lockdown During Taping Schedule

It’s been a wild few days for the WWE roster as they’ve been in Orlando, Florida for the last week to tape various programs at the Performance Center.

PWinsider.com reported on Monday that WWE has talent in town and those stars in the city to work the tapings are locked down at one hotel.

In fact, the whole hotel is full of WWE people ranging from talent, creative, and production as they have completely taken over with morning production meetings in a conference room.

It was also noted that WWE has only brought in producers who already live in Florida and did not bring in producers who live in other parts of the country. Jamie Noble, Adam Pearce, Road Dogg, and Shawn Michaels have been at the tapings.

The multi-day marathon taping schedule at the training kicked off on Saturday with two episodes of SmackDown. Taping for future episodes of NXT took place on Sunday from Full Sail University.

Monday will see a live broadcast of Monday Night RAW on the USA Network while Tuesday will see the March 30th and April 6th RAW episodes be taped. Moving forward to Wednesday and Thursday, WWE will tape both nights of WrestleMania 36.

WWE is trying their best to prevent someone from possibly contracting coronavirus, which has seen an outbreak in the United States over the last two weeks.

Clearly, if someone would get the virus while working the tapings then it would not be good as it could spread to other people.

With WWE not having any fans in attendance and only essential people at the shows, the company is staying within the CDC recommendations.

Latest On WWE Negotiating With ESPN For Potential Streaming Deal

  • WWE RAW Preview: Brock Lesnar Appearance, Randy Orton’s Answer To Edge’s WM Challenge

For the second straight week, WWE’s flagship show, RAW, will not take place in front of a live crowd.

Thus, it’s time to look ahead starting with tonight’s episode of Monday Night RAW. The company has yet to announce any matches for the show.

We do know of a few segments that will take place on the show. One includes the response of Randy Orton to the challenge of a Last Man Standing Match at WrestleMania 36 from WWE Hall of Famer Edge.

Edge made the challenge last week on RAW. The belief is that this is the way WWE is going to make the match official.

WWE holds this show in Orlando, Florida at the WWE Performance Center. As usual, fans should expect more matches and segments to be revealed this afternoon for RAW.

WWE is advertising the following items for tonight’s broadcast:

    • WWE Champion Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman to appear to further program with Drew McIntyre
    • Randy Orton to respond to Edge’s WrestleMania 36 challenge
    • WWE will also be creating new programs and building on the hype for existing feuds that will take place heading into the WrestleMania 36 pay-per-view event.

  • Latest On WWE Negotiating With ESPN For Potential Streaming Deal

WWE is still looking to land a new streaming deal with ESPN, but negotiations are still underway.

In February, Dave Meltzer reported that the talks would be in regards to WWE content airing on the ESPN+ service. The deal would see WWE sell their rights to air pay-per-views on ESPN+ in order to get more money than what they earn through the WWE Network.

Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that while the two sides have been talking, they are \”far apart on money” because WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon wants a higher number than what UFC got from ESPN.

Meltzer didn’t share the exact number but it was noted it wasn\’t expected to be a big $100+ million deal. It all comes down to the unsteady climate and how much revenue from advertisements that ESPN can get.

While WWE is talking with ESPN, there are other streaming services that could be options for WWE. These partners include DAZN and NBC’s Peacock service.

The Peacock service will launch later this year and some people think this would be the best bet for WWE.

The situation for such a move of WWE selling PPV rights is due to the subscription numbers for the WWE Network continuing to decrease.
