Stephanie Vaquer’s Injury Nixed Planned WWE Backlash Match

Stephanie Vaquer’s shoulder injury cost her more than time on television. It also erased a championship match that WWE had been quietly building toward for Backlash on May 9 in Tampa.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that WWE was internally discussing booking Vaquer against Women’s World Champion Liv Morgan at Backlash as part of the show’s lineup. The match was never officially announced, but it had been actively considered before Vaquer’s injury forced the company to abandon those plans entirely and rethink the Backlash card in a different direction.

Vaquer was written off television during the April 27 episode of Raw through a backstage attack angle involving Raquel Rodriguez and Roxanne Perez, but the injury behind it proved to be legitimate. She is currently dealing with a confirmed second-degree AC joint sprain, with no firm return timetable established. SummerSlam has been mentioned as a possible target, but nothing has been confirmed.

The rivalry between Vaquer and Morgan had built genuine momentum coming out of WrestleMania 42, where Morgan defeated Vaquer to capture the Women’s World Championship on Night One. A Backlash rematch would have been a natural continuation of that story at the next major premium live event. Instead, WWE finds itself without that program and with no confirmed replacement.
