  • Ranking The Top 5 Most Important Main Events In WWE Survivor Series History

Turkey Day is just a week away and with it, WWE\’s Thanksgiving tradition, Survivor Series is coming up. While often maligned in comparison to its other more consistently vaunted Big Four PLE peers—WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and the Royal Rumble—Survivor Series has been a major platform for pro wrestling history.

Which main events from this show were the most important to WWE history, though? Questions like this are always subjective, but there were five particular selections that stood out from the rest in shaping what was to come.

It\’s a testament to the historical importance of the Survivor Series PLE brand in general that it, in choosing a top five, so many huge and memorable main events fall into only honorable mention consideration. That list includes Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar that marked the return of Goldberg and early steps in normalizing the potential for a main-event squash, The Rock returning to the ring and tag teaming with John Cena against The Miz and R-Truth, a Brock Lesnar vs. Daniel Bryan instant classic, Roman Reigns winning his first world title over Dean Ambrose, a Survivor Series all-timer in Team Cena vs. Team Authority, and the original Elimination Chamber match in which Shawn Michaels won his final world title.

    5. The Original Main Event

    \"\"

    WWE

In 1987, WWE grasped for a new concept in order to add a second annual pay-per-view event to its calendar. Such a move capitalized on the overwhelming popularity of the brand and success of WrestleMania, in addition to going on the offensive against Jim Crockett Promotions in directly competing with their flagship annual spectacular, Starrcade.

On one hand, the answer was obvious—Hulk Hogan battling Andre the Giant had proven perhaps the most successful draw in company history as the main event of WrestleMania 3. Rebooking this singles bout would have diminishing returns, though, given Hogan was never known as an in-ring virtuoso and especially given Andre\’s progressively weakening physical health and resulting diminished capacity to put on a passable match. So, the best solution emerged: to position the men as captains of teams in which their partners could shoulder the majority of the work.

The resulting match was deceptively good with clever booking that protected Hogan with a mid-match DQ elimination, pushed Bam Bam Bigelow as he stood up well to one-on-three odds, collecting pins over One Man Gang and King Kong Bundy before succumbing to Andre the Giant. For his part, Andre emerging the sole survivor kept him well positioned as the top heel and a credible WWE Championship challenger as the calendar rolled into 1988. Finally, the match put over the elimination tag-team format in general as a fun novelty, capping the first Survivor Series with an entertaining match that had a genuinely surprising outcome.

    4. The First Main Roster War Games

    \"\"

    WWE

After five years of contrived brand warfare offering a seriously mixed bag of Survivor Series events, 2022 saw WWE make a radical turn with the very first main roster War Games match, pitting a peak Bloodline lineup of Roman Reigns, Solo Sikoa, Sami Zayn, and The Usos against Drew McIntyre, Kevin Owens, and The Brawling Brutes crew of Sheamus, Butch, and Ridge Holland.

It was long rumored that Triple H championed the idea of WWE WarGames bouts while Vince McMahon was resistant to the idea—part of why the gimmick appeared on NXT years before launching on the main roster. With The Game at the creative helm by November 2022 and The Bloodline a perfect fit as a faction to follow in the tradition of WarGames matches centered on The Four Horsemen, Dangerous Alliance, nWo, and The Undisputed Era, the table was set.

The resulting match was very good. While fans will endlessly debate the relative quality of different WarGames outings, there\’s little questioning the draw this style of match proved to be and the fact that the main event delivered contributed mightily to launching a new annual tradition.

    3. Team WWE Vs. Team Alliance 2001

    \"\"

In 2001, WWE infamously wrestled defeat from the jaws of victory as the dream scenario of booking a WWE vs. WCW war (not to mention with the ECW brand and talents in the mix) became a reality. There are so many reasons the Invasion angle failed, with some of it coming down creative, some of it talent relations as many of WCW\’s marquee names chose not to come over in 2001. Nonetheless what started as the most promising of angles limped into fall 2001.

To the credit of the powers that be, who opted to bring the Invasion to a conclusion at Survivor Series, taking advantage of the well-established tag team elimination format to pose Team WWE vs. Team Alliance for one last showdown. Against the odds, the final match of the angle proved quite arguably the best of the bunch, as the action delivered in a dramatic, fun main event that conclusively ended the high-profile storyline and set WWE on a path for its future.

Team Alliance going up against WWE with a lineup that included Steve Austin, who\’d become a star in WWE after WCW fired him, Kurt Angle who\’d only ever wrestled for WWE, and Shane McMahon is borderline laughable in hindsight. Nonetheless, that lineup actually does bespeak a lot about how WWE booked The Alliance, not to mention that the talents chosen delivered in spades.

    2. The Rock Vs. Mankind

    \"\"

    WWE

When it comes to ranking the most objectively famous professional wrestlers in WWE history, including casual fans and non-fans, Mick Foley is in the conversation for a top ten-ish spot. Meanwhile, The Rock is in the next echelon of names with a legitimate case to be called the most famous wrestler who ever lived.

Going into Survivor Series 1998, both of these men were fringe main event acts—perhaps more earnestly, upper mid-carders when they reached the finals of a tournament to crown a new WWE Champion. So it was that this Survivor Series main event not only helped elevate both burgeoning stars, but cemented Rock\’s status as a star second-only to Stone Cold Steve Austin in that heated moment of the Attitude Era.

In addition to pushing the right guys and the clever booking in pulling a big swerve with Rock\’s surprise heel turn to become Mr. McMahon\’s hand-picked Corporate Champion, there was the matter of poeticism. WWE had already bounced back from a rocky time the year before with massive creative and commercial success in 1998. This Survivor Series main event put an exclamation point at the end of the sentence as WWE riffed off the infamous Montreal Screwjob to fully own the infamous moment and nod to fledgling Internet and \”smart\” fans, while marching forward to even greater heights of the Attitude Era.

    1. Bret Hart Vs. Shawn Michaels, 1997

    \"\"

    WWE

The 1998 Survivor Series main event finish of Mr. McMahon calling for the bell while The Rock had Mankind locked in a Sharpshooter wouldn\’t have been nearly as potent or even sensical were it not for the Montreal Screwjob going down one year earlier.

A heated on-air and behind-the-scenes rivalry between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels came to a head with the two defining New Generation stars battling it out one last time for the WWE Championship. So much has already been written and discussed about the scheme to get the belt off The Hitman on his way out the door to WCW, including calling for his submission loss without the performer himself consenting to that finish.

This main event was important enough to remain a topic of conversation and debate as we approach the three-decade anniversary in just a couple short years. Hart recently reflected on the Montreal Screwjob at an Inside The Ropes event, revealing he wishes he\’d knocked out Triple H in addition to giving Vince McMahon a black eye. Combining legitimate shoot with worked shoot elements, this moment in wrestling history marked seismic shifts across the board, including a decade-long rift between Hart and WWE and Michaels being cemented as the guy who would ultimately pass the torch to Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania months later.

WWE itself would forever change, and despite the poor look of screwing over such a well-respected veteran as Hart, it\’s hard to deny this moment didn\’t serve the company in the long term as it launched the Mr. McMahon character and charted a course for the Attitude Era.

  • Please Triple H, Survivor Series Can Have Both WarGames And Elimination Tag Team Matches

In 2017, something truly exciting happened when the first-ever WWE-branded WarGames match occurred. The gimmick match had been an NWA and then WCW staple, but even under that branding had fallen apart over time with modified rules that undermined the concept in the 1998 and 2000 editions.

WWE brought fresh talent to the traditional concept and NXT was a gothe formula could grow tiresome with only so many compelling stories to tell within that framework, and fatigue following from too much of the same. the bouts featured some of the best workers in the world, backed by an old-school sensibility to the booking.

The next step in the gimmick’s evolution came in 2022, when WarGames emerged as a new Survivor Series tradition. Indeed, the last three editions of the event each featured two WarGames outings—one featuring women, the other men—and factions like The Bloodline, Judgment Day, and Damage CTRL anchoring the matches—harkened back to yesteryear when The Four Horsemen, The Dangerous Alliance, and finally the New World Order largely defined these bouts.

Along the way, though, traditional elimination tag team matches fell by the wayside for Survivor Series. The early days of the PLE featured nothing but this style of match, and while the focus wavered over time, four-on-four or five-on-five bouts of this style were still at the bedrock of the annual event.

With Survivor Series 2025 around the corner and, at press time, no matches officially announced, all we know is that WWE does plan to have at least one WarGames battle. Could they feature an elimination tag team contest too?

Too Much Of The Same Gimmick Match Has Diminishing Returns

    \"Sami

It made sense when WWE transitioned away from Survivor Series cards that were all or even mostly elimination tag team matches. The formula could grow tiresome with only so many compelling stories to tell within that framework and fatigue following from too much of the same.

There’s a case to be made that WWE has been overdoing it on WarGames as well in the modern era. While WWE’s WarGames matches themselves have by and large been excellent, consistently featuring two on the same card each year has invited comparison between the two—not to mention a bit of fatigue—as the second match of the same style inevitably doesn’t feel quite as exciting for the repetition.

Fans Are Nostalgic For Elimination Tag Team Matches

    \"Triple

The introduction of WarGames to the WWE landscape but it served the nostalgic tastes of older fans who’d followed the NWA or WCW and introduced a new generation of fans to a genuinely different match type that introduced different creative possibilities. Moreover, adjustments like taking the roof off the cages invited fun high spots that have become fodder for WWE highlight reels.

Still, longtime WWE fans miss their elimination tag team action. Not every match conducted under these rules was a classic—and, indeed, WWE had its share of misses in brand warfare angles that felt forced and booking that got too complicated for its own good. Nonetheless, there are examples like a white-hot blow-off to the Invasion angle in 2001, Team Austin vs. Team Bischoff in 2003 that produced incredible drama, a high-level Raw vs. SmackDown showdown in 2005, or a masterfully constructed Team Cena vs. Team Authority clash in 2014 that set up Sting’s debut.

All of these examples speak to just how good an elimination tag bout can be, especially with the right story and the gimmick not being overexposed.

One Elimination Tag Team Match And One WarGames Gives Fans The Best Of Both Worlds

The answer seems clear. One elimination tag team match. One WarGames. Three or four solid singles or regular tag team bouts to flesh out the Survivor Series card. This structure can allow both team gimmick matches that are now associated with Survivor Series to shine and not suffer from redundancy or comparison.

There is the unavoidable issue that, presumably, with the gimmick matches breaking along gender lines, one division might come across as lesser. To put a finer point on it, if women got the elimination tag team match, some fans might perceive that as a slight compared to men getting WarGames. There’s no perfect answer there, but alternating which gender gets which match for years to come create some equity there, and allows WWE to craft both stories and book talent to best serve each gimmick.

Featuring an elimination tag match alongside WarGames also sets up fun possibilities around the two-ring structure. After all, couldn’t the spectacle of a face in peril having to cross to the rings for the hot tag add to the drama and offer a more realistic scenario for why pins aren’t getting broken up?

Ultimately, a lack of elimination tags in recent years does have the benefit of absence makes fans’ hearts grow fonder. Bringing  that gimmick back alongside WarGames can set up a better diversified, more fun card and scratch a nostalgic itch for fans of all kinds, craving both styles of team matches.

  • Major Plan For Survivor Series Involving John Cena’s Retirement Match

A significant storyline involving John Cena’s retirement was reportedly planned for Survivor Series just weeks ago, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The plan would see Cena capture the Intercontinental Championship from Dominik Mysterio at the November pay-per-view before defending it against GUNTHER in what would be Cena’s retirement match.

Dave Meltzer noted that Dominik Mysterio is the favorite to retain his title this weekend Saturday Night’s Main Event on November 1, specifically to preserve this Survivor Series angle. “Mysterio would be the favorite given there was the plan a few weeks ago of John Cena winning that title from Mysterio at Survivor Series and defending against Gunther in his retirement match,” Meltzer wrote.

The Intercontinental Championship will be on the line at Saturday Night’s Main Event in a Triple Threat match, with Mysterio defending against Penta and Rusev. The event takes place in Salt Lake City and streams exclusively on Peacock.

Survivor Series: WarGames is scheduled for November 29, 2025, at Petco Park in San Diego, California. The event will mark John Cena’s final appearance at a Survivor Series event as an in-ring performer. No matches have been officially announced for the show, other than at least one War Games match.

    John Cena and Dominik Mysterio

John Cena has repeatedly shown a deep respect for Dominik Mysterio’s talent and potential, especially in recent interviews. On the April 21, 2025 episode of The Pat McAfee Show, Cena praised Dominik as someone who was “born for this,” saying he “makes everything effortless and doesn’t crack under pressure.” Cena emphasized that Dominik has excelled in every challenge WWE has thrown at him and predicted a bright future: “We aren’t even close to what that kid’s capable of… He will be the most famous Mysterio in professional wrestling”

Cena’s comments reflect genuine admiration and set up Dominik as both a credible rival and potential torch-bearer for the next era.?

Mysterio, however, has embraced a sharply antagonistic tone towards Cena, often mixing disrespect with backhanded respect—playing perfectly into his heel persona.

In several recent interviews, Dominik has dismissed Cena as nothing more than an “old geezer” and made it clear he’d welcome the chance to end Cena’s career.

During an interview with Tony Free Dominik quipped, “If John Cena wants some, he can come get some… If that old geezer wants me to put a final nail in his coffin, I’ll be more than happy to. That’s what I’m here for.”

He’s also labeled Cena as “past his prime” and indicated he isn’t intimidated, saying Cena’s legacy ends with him.

This verbal jousting has added authenticity and energy to their ongoing storyline, with Dominik determined to establish himself over the “GOAT” John Cena while Cena offers both high praise and subtle challenges to the young star.?

  • Bron Breakker Warns \’Sewer Rat\’ Kaiser & \’Old Man\’ Sheamus Ahead Of WWE Survivor Series

Bron Breakker is all types of \”Steinerized\” for his upcoming triple threat match tonight at WWE Survivor Series. Donning a WCW shirt of his dear Uncle Scott, the Intercontinental Champion cut a pre-match promo as he was asked by Jackie Redmod what his mindset was going up against both Sheamus and Ludwig Kaiser. Breakker took a moment to note the respect he has for both competitors in the bout. Bron made clear he knew the score of Kaiser and how he\’ll aim to win the match.

\”[Kaiser is] gonna try to sewer rat around and steal the championship from me.\”

When it comes to Sheamus, Breakker said just cause \’The Celtic Warrior\’ is searching to secure that Intercontinental gold, the only title he\’s never held in WWE, doesn\’t mean he\’ll get it.

\”I played for the Ravens and never won a Super Bowl but should they give me a Super Bowl ring cause I was there for participation? No! Take it back to the retirement home old man, this ain’t Saturday night bingo!\”

Sheamus responded with a Will Ferrell gif, stating, \”That\’s cute. I remember when I had my first beer.\”

    https://twitter.com/WWESheamus/status/1862979678136348794

Both Kaiser and Sheamus had challenged Breakker for the Title the past two weeks on WWE RAW. Due to interference by both men in their respective bouts, the matches led to disqualification finishes, building to the battle that\’s taking place at Survivor Series.

Kaiser could be a wild card in this match as he\’s finding himself a little at odds with his Imperium pal, GUNTHER, who is defending his WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Damian Priest.

One of the key matches has been confirmed for WWE Survivor Series, which will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

On this week’s Raw episode, the WWE announced that GUNTHER will defend his World Heavyweight Championship against Damian Priest. GUNTHER has held the title since defeating Priest at SummerSlam 2024 and has been on an impressive winning streak since.

After claiming the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, GUNTHER entered into a feud with Randy Orton, ultimately prevailing at Bash in Berlin. His next title defense saw him retain against Sami Zayn on the October 7 episode of Raw. However, he later fell short in a tag team match where he and Ludwig Kaiser lost to Orton and Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes. GUNTHER also lost to Rhodes in a title match at Crown Jewel.

Last week on Raw, WWE held a Fatal Four-Way match to determine GUNTHER’s next challenger. The competitors included Priest, Dominik Mysterio, Seth Rollins, and Sheamus, with Priest securing the victory and earning his shot at Survivor Series.

The only other match currently confirmed for Survivor Series is the OG Bloodline vs. Bloodline in a WarGames match. The event will air live on Peacock.

  • WWE Survivor Series 2024 Match Card Predictions: WarGames and more

As WWE\’s final premium live event of the year approaches, fans are eagerly anticipating the action-packed card for WWE Survivor Series 2024. Set to take place on November 30 at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, this year\’s event promises to deliver thrilling WarGames matches and intense championship bouts. Let\’s dive into our predictions for the WWE Survivor Series 2024 match card.

Men\’s WarGames Match: The Bloodline Civil War

The ongoing saga of The Bloodline is set to reach its boiling point at Survivor Series. With the faction now split into two warring factions, the stage is set for an epic WarGames showdown.

    Predicted Teams:

    • OG Bloodline: Roman Reigns, Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso and Sami Zayn
    • New Bloodline: Solo Sikoa, Jacob Fatu, Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa

This match promises to be a star-studded affair, with The Rock\’s potential involvement adding an extra layer of excitement. The inclusion of Cody Rhodes on the OG Bloodline side could plant seeds for future storylines, potentially leading to a clash with Roman Reigns down the line.

Women\’s WarGames Match: Team Bayley vs. Team Nia Jax

The women\’s division is not to be outdone, with another WarGames match featuring some of WWE\’s top female superstars.

    Predicted Teams:

    • Team Bayley: Bayley, Bianca Belair, Jade Cargill, Naomi, and Michin
    • Team Nia Jax: Nia Jax, Tiffany Stratton, Chelsea Green, Piper Niven, and Blair Davenport

This match will not only showcase the incredible talent in the women\’s division but also add intrigue with the possibility of Tiffany Stratton potentially cashing in her Money in the Bank contract during or after the grueling battle.

World Heavyweight Championship: Gunther vs. Damian Priest

Gunther\’s dominant reign as World Heavyweight Champion is likely to face another test at Survivor Series. With a Fatal 4-Way match announced on Raw to determine his next challenger, we predict Damian Priest will emerge victorious and earn a shot at the title.

This match would be a rematch from their encounter at SummerSlam, where they displayed strong in-ring chemistry. While Priest is unlikely to dethrone Gunther, their clash promises to be a hard-hitting affair that could steal the show.

WWE Women\’s Championship: Nia Jax vs. Naomi

With Nia Jax firmly established as a dominant force in the women\’s division, a title defense against the recently returned Naomi seems like a perfect fit for Survivor Series. Naomi\’s popularity with fans and her seven-year drought from singles gold make her a compelling challenger, potentially setting the stage for an emotional title change.

United States Championship: Triple Threat Match

The ongoing rivalry between Carmelo Hayes and Andrade could culminate in a Triple Threat match for the United States Championship, with current champion LA Knight defending his title. This match would not only provide a fitting end to the Hayes-Andrade feud but also showcase three of SmackDown\’s most exciting performers in a high-stakes encounter.

    Additional Potential Matches

    • Bronson Reed vs. Seth Rollins
    • Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship: Judgment Day vs. The Street Profits

  • Heath Slater Believes CM Punk\’s WWE Survivor Series Return Overshadowed Randy Orton\’s Comeback

CM Punk returned to WWE after nearly a decade away from the company. That Survivor Series return brought Chicago fans to a frenzy, but he wasn\’t the only return that night.

Looking Back At CM Punk\’s WWE Survivor Series Return

Randy Orton needed back fusion surgery in 2022, a fact that cost him 18 months of in-ring competition. The Apex Predator also returned at Survivor Series, where he helped his team win the WarGames match. Then CM Punk returned to steal the spotlight.

While speaking to Rewind, Recap, Relive, Heath Slater discussed CM Punk\’s return to WWE. He saw it as a very cool moment, but he also feels as though it overshadowed Randy Orton\’s return to the ring.

\”I mean it\’s a thing in the wrestling world with the fans and the popularity of it. I mean, it\’s a cool moment. Come on, man, it\’s been a decade pretty much. It\’s a cool moment.\”

\”Do I wish that they would have done it at WarGames? No, because I feel that Randy should have had a great moment, too.\”

\”Because Randy is amazing. He\’s one of those Hall of Famers, icons, legends. If you sculpt out what a Superstar should be, it\’s Randy. I feel like it overshadowed Randy\’s moment. But, it was a cool moment, of course.\”

\”The whole backstage drama BS drama, it\’s there. We all know it\’s there. How will it be handled now? Who knows? I guess we\’ll see. He can burn bridges, but he can re-build them. Who knows? Who the hell knows? For the fans and the people who watch WWE, cool moment.\”

Heath Slater went on to say that CM Punk \”always stuck with himself a lot,\” even as leader of the new Nexus faction. Still, Slater had good things to say about CM Punk\’s return to WWE being a cool moment. He might have decided against running that return right after Randy Orton\’s first match in 18 months.

CM Punk\’s WWE Return So Far

CM Punk\’s return to WWE has been a financially successful decision. He is selling a truckload of merchandise, his name is trending, and Warner Bros Discovery may have re-entered the discussion for RAW\’s next television deal just because of his return.

The jury is still out on whether CM Punk can avoid those backstage issues that he\’s known for. As it stands right now, CM Punk\’s homecoming is going just fine.

  • Kevin Dunn was Missing Backstage at WWE Survivor Series WarGames

WWE\’s Executive Vice President of Television Production was nowhere to be found last weekend at Survivor Series WarGames.

Survivor Series Wargames, the 36th Survivor Series Premium Live Event, saw the iconic double-ring cage stipulation be used on the main roster for the first time ever.

In the show\’s opener, Team Bianca defeated Team Damage in the Women\’s WarGames match, while The Bloodline stood tall at the end of the night over Team Brutes.

    Kevin Dunn

Despite being in such an important role, Dunn wasn\’t backstage at last weekend\’s Premium Live Event, Fightful Select has confirmed.

The report specified that Dunn remains with WWE, and that there have not been any plans for him to not be working there anytime soon.

After Vince McMahon\’s retirement earlier this year, questions arose about what role Dunn would have under the new regime led by Nick Khan, Stephanie McMahon, and Triple H.

    Here to Stay

Earlier this year, it was reported that Dunn was expected to leave WWE within the coming 12 months, either of his own accord or by being forced out.

It has been said that Stephanie McMahon is no fan of Dunn, and that he is not a Triple H \’guy\’ either.

Speaking to the media ahead of Summerslam this year, Triple H namedropped Dunn as someone who will be a key part of the new vision for the company.

To take it [WWE] beyond where it is now, the only way we’re gonna do that is with a team. That’s with Steph [McMahon.] That’s with Nick Khan. That’s with myself. That’s with Kevin Dunn

    Triple H.
  • Survivor Series WarGames Broke Several Records for WWE

The WarGames format for WWE\’s annual Survivor Series Premium Live Event may be here to stay after the success of this year\’s show.

Last weekend, WWE held its 36th Survivor Series event, which for the third time ever featured no traditional elimination tag team matches (after 1998 and 2002.)

Instead, fans saw two WarGames matches, with Team Bianca winning the opener and The Bloodline standing tall in the main event.

    Record Breaker

In an internal memo obtained by Fightful Select, WWE highlighted many records that Survivor Series WarGames has shattered.

The memo says that this was the most-viewed Survivor Series on record, jumping 46% vs. 2021’s edition of the show.

Merchandise sales were also the best in the event\’s history, up 20% from last year’s Survivor Series.

The live gate was the highest, both for a Survivor Series and for any WWE event in Boston, an accolade Triple H referenced at the post-show press conference.

Fan enjoyment rating popped 48% vs. last year though it is unclear how exactly this metric is measured.

Social media video views were up year over year, with the TikTok of Roman Reigns sending Sami Zayn into the match garnering 13 million views alone.

    The Future

There has been speculation that this year\’s Survivor Series marked the end of the traditional elimination match, in favor of WarGames.

Speaking at the post-show press conference, Triple H said that \”sometimes stuff needs a break for a while,\” adding that it wasn\’t solely his decision.

The WWE Head of Creative and Talent downplayed the idea that the iconic tag match is finished, adding \”I don\’t think we\’re done with anything.\”

  • Controversial Ex-Superstar Worked Backstage at WWE Survivor Series WarGames

Former WWE Superstar Brian Kendrick is seemingly back with WWE as a producer for the promotion.

Kendrick first joined WWE in 2002 and has made several returns, the most recent being in 2016 as part of the Cruiserweight Classic.

In January of the year, Kendrick asked for his release from the promotion, which was granted on February 1.

    Survivor Series WarGames

Kendrick didn\’t appear on-screen at last weekend\’s WWE Survivor Series WarGames event, but he did have a role backstage.

Fightful Select reports that Kendrick worked alongside Jason Jordan to produce the SmackDown Women\’s Championship match between Ronda Rousey and Shotzi.

Prior to his departure from WWE earlier this year, Kendrick had spent close to a year as a backstage producer for the WWE NXT brand.

After being attacked by Harland, Kendrick \’resigned\’ from his backstage role in order to face the now-AEW star, but the match didn\’t take place due to Kendrick\’s departure.

    Controversy

The same day as his departure from WWE, it was announced that Kendrick would be making his AEW debut on the February 2, episode, in a match against Jon Moxley.

Hours after the announcement, the match was canceled due to controversial comments made by the former Cruiserweight Champion in the past.

Kendrick\’s controversial claims include stating that the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting was staged, and said in 2011 that the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center was faked with the use of holograms.

Kendrick had also claimed that the number of people killed during the Holocaust had been exaggerated and that gas chambers were used to delouse Jewish victims, rather than kill them.

Kendrick later apologized for the comments and has worked with Holocaust memorial groups to learn more and try and make amends.

  • \”Terrified\” – Becky Lynch Shares Reaction to Insane WarGames Spot

Becky Lynch emerged victorious in her first outing inside WarGames, but the match took its toll on The Man.

Last night\’s Survivor Series WarGames event marked Lynch\’s first match since Summerslam 2022, when she faced Raw Women\’s Champion Bianca Belair.

Lynch was attacked by Damage CTRL on the Raw after Summerslam and made her TV return on this week\’s SmackDown

    Terrified

Becky Lynch was the final woman to enter WarGames, as Team Damage CTRL had won the advantage that their entries would be first.

It was The Man who proved to be the difference maker, as she won the match for her team after a dropkick off the top of the cage onto Dakota Kai and IYO SKY, both of whom were perched on a table.

Speaking on the Survivor Series WarGames post-show press conference, Lynch shared her reaction to trying the move earlier in the day.

\”Lads, I was terrified [laughs.] No, I wasn\’t terrified in the moment. I was terrified getting up there in practice today, I climbed up [the cage] as I wanted to see the height of it. And my palms were sweaty, knees weak, arms spaghetti [laughs].

\”I was terrified getting up there in practice today.\”

    Becky Lynch.

The former Raw Women\’s Champion explained how things felt much different when she hit the move in front of a passionate Boston crowd at the TD Garden.

\”When you have the feeling and energy of the crowd, I feel like anything is possible. It\’s the people that let you feel like you\’re a superhero and make you feel like a superhero, so then you become a superhero. And God bless Dakota Kai and IYO SKY, I\’m sure they\’re feeling a lot worse than I am!\”

    Bianca Belair

The last time fans had seen Becky Lynch before this week, she had been trying to wrestle the Raw Women\’s Championship away from Bianca Belair.

Speaking on the press conference, Lynch said that she had been in Ireland for her brother\’s 40th birthday, before getting a call from her rival turned friend.

\”She\’s become a good friend. We started off as bitter enemies. Obviously I came in and used nefarious means to beat her [at Summerslam 2021.] But I\’ve gained so much respect for this woman.\”

  • Triple H Gives Update on Future of Survivor Series Elimination Matches

What is the fate of the traditional Survivor Series elimination match, following the recent Survivor Series WarGames event?

The traditional elimination match has been a staple of the November Premium Live Event since the first Survivor Series in 1987, and the show was only tag-matches until 1991.

This week\’s Survivor Series WarGames saw the iconic NWA/WCW match replace the traditional elimination match.

    Not Over

This year\’s Survivor Series marked the third time in history that the November show has featured zero traditional Survivor Series elimination matches (after 1998 and 2002.)

On the Survivor Series WarGames post-show, Triple H was asked by Pro Wrestling Illustrated if this year\’s show is a sign that WWE is done with the elimination tag match.

\”I don\’t think we\’re done with anything. I think that when we look at it together as a whole, it\’s about what\’s best for our fans in the moment, Sometimes stuff needs a break for a while. Sometimes you bring it back later and it\’s iconic. \’Oh my God, they\’re going back to that!\’ To say it\’ll never happen again, I think is wrong.\”

    \”Sometimes stuff needs a break for a while.\”

Triple H on WWE\’s lack of elimination tag matches at WWE Survivor Series WarGames.

    Group Decision

Given how iconic the Survivor Series elimination match is, the decision to host no matches with the stipulation could not have been easy.

On the post-show, Triple H said that this wasn\’t a call he made on his own, but rather a group effort.

\”I think it was the right year [for a break from Elimination matches.] We all looked at it and decided internally that it was the right year to maybe freshen up the concept a little bit. Either the five-on-five tags and maybe even the straight-out Raw Vs. SmackDown [stipulations] were a bit tired and needed a refresh. So that\’s what we did.\”

Triple H didn\’t name who else was a factor in the decision-making process regarding scrapping the Survivor Series elimination match type.

The King of Kings took over as WWE\’s Head of Creative in July, replacing Vince McMahon in the role.

    For the Fans

Triple H did not confirm that the traditional Survivor Series match-type is done, but did not confirm the future of WarGames either.

As he explained in the press conference, WWE is taking a wait-and-see approach, which works around the response by fans to the show.

\”We try it out. We see where it goes. And we see if the fans enjoy it. Because at the end of the day, we\’re just trying to give everyone the best entertainment that we can. So we try things on. If they [the fans] happen to like it, we stick with it. If it needs to tweak [we will.] You\’re constantly evaluating everything you do. You have to. Otherwise, you stagnate and die.\”

Triple H\’s \’evaluations\’ of WWE since being appointed Head of Creative and Head of Talent have seen several released Superstars be brought back to the promotion.

Bianca Belair, Becky Lynch, Asuka, Alexa Bliss, and Mia Yim faced Bayley, IYO SKY, Dakota Kai, Nikki Cross, and Rhea Ripely in the Women\’s WarGames match to begin Survivor Series 2022. Bianca Belair and Dakota Kai started off the match.

The RAW Women\’s Champion connected with a Dropkick but Dakota shrugged if off. Kai stood in between the two rings and tried to avoid Belair. Bianca caught her and slammed her to the canvas before launching her into the turnbuckle. Belair hit a shoulder tackle and lifted Kai up in a Fireman\’s Carry.

Kai escaped by pulling on Bianca\’s hair but it backfired as The EST whipped her into the steel cage. Bianca followed it up with a Backbreaker. Dakota sent Belair into the steel cage and booted the champ in the face a few times before posing in the corner.
