The story of Jeremy Ganger, pro wrestler who saved dozens during Dayton mass shooting

Jeremy Ganger’s retirement match is scheduled for Saturday at Wrestling Revolver: Revolver Strong, at the Calumet Center in Dayton, Ohio.

When Ganger walks to the ring, embedded in his leg is a piece of shrapnel. A reminder of the night his life and that of a city upended into a national tragedy.

He received the injury when a gunman killed nine people and injured 27 others in Dayton’s Oregon District in 2019. Ganger was working as a bouncer at a local club called Ned Pepper’s when it occurred. Where he saved dozens of lives with his quick thinking and courageous actions.

Police were getting ready to question him when an officer noticed he was bleeding from the leg. Ganger had been hit during the shooting, but was so busy rushing people to safety, he hadn’t noticed. He was taken to hospital.

“I refuse to get it taken out,” Ganger said. “It’s my way of remembering the nine people we lost that night.”

Ganger knew six of the nine who died. If he wasn’t there that night, it would have been dozens more.

    August 4, 2019

After having dinner with a friend, Ganger went to work at Ned Pepper’s, checking ID’s outside the front door. An experienced bouncer, Ganger knew most of the customers and the people who frequented Dayton’s Oregon District. He recalled the area as one big family, one he’s always happy to visit.

As he worked outside, he heard a gunshot down the street. Ganger, who grew up in rural Miami County, knew the sound of a rifle being fired.

When the second shot fired, Ganger saw the shooter coming from an alley.

“We saw people running from the Blind Bob’s area,” Ganger said. “I was yelling and freaking out like everyone else. I saw the shooter coming down the street and the muzzle of his gun lighting up.”

Ganger said staffers at Ned Pepper’s, Blind Bob’s and other clubs in the district had active shooter training at the time. Ganger began yelling for people to run into the bar and began guiding them in as people began falling from the gunfire.

Security camera video of the shooting showed Ganger guiding dozens of people in through the door of the club and clearing the patio as fast as he could. He kept standing outside the door as the gunman approached.

The gunman was carrying a rifle with a 100-round drum magazine. He was wearing Kevlar and a tactical helmet. Law enforcement reports later stated he had substances in his system.

Dozens of people began hiding behind the bar at the back of the building. Many of the male staffers dropped down to cover female staffers. Reports said as many as 300 people had fled into Ned Pepper’s for protection.

The club had two doors at the entrance. Ganger locked and shut the first as the gunman approached.

“My thought was to get everyone safe,” Ganger said. “And he wasn’t getting into the building no matter what.”

The gunman paused, long enough for Dayton police officers to shoot and kill him. Officers wearing summer gear were armed only with handguns and had fired dozens of rounds at the gunman before he fell. The autopsy report said he was shot 30 times.

Ganger, not knowing if the shooter was dead, grabbed his weapon as police entered and swept the building. People began running out of the other restaurants and clubs, tending to victims with towels, performing CPR and helping anyway they could.

As Ganger saw people tending to the wounded, he glanced at the door he was standing in front of as he ushered dozens to safety. It was riddled with bullet holes.

In less than 30 seconds, nine people were dead, 17 others had been shot and 10 more suffered injuries related to the shooting. Dayton police officers responded, killing the shooter, in just seconds. Among those on the scene that night were staffers from a local professional baseball team, the daughter of a U.S. Congressman and hundreds of others whose lives changed in less than half a minute.

    A wrestling fan turned wrestler

Ganger began wrestling in the early 2000s. He worked local independents before meeting Cody Hawk, a long-time trainer and later owner of the Heartland Wrestling Association. The HWA was a developmental territory for both WCW and WWE during the Monday night era and was founded by Les Thatcher, considered by many to be the among the best trainers in the world.

Thatcher sold the company to Hawk. Hawk trained former WWE, AEW and IWGP champion Jon Moxley and trained Ganger, who discovered there were advantages to having a third-shift job as a wrestler.

”My roommate at the time was Sami Callahan,” Ganger said. “I was working later and that allowed me to get a lot of one-on-one time with Cody in the daytime when it wasn’t busy. He took me under his wing.”

Ohio’s competitive independent scene didn’t keep wrestlers from helping each other. Ganger said he was surprised at how veterans and more established stars were always generous with their time, showing him the ropes.

He recalled Shaun Ricker, who wrestles as LA Knight in the WWE, being especially helpful, along with Nigel McGuinness and Moxley.

“Those one-on-one sessions were amazing for me,” Ganger said.

Ganger, a fan of Mick Foley as a kid, adopted the death match style after working with Alex Colon, a friend he would task with being his opponent in his retirement match. He was highly influenced by Callihan, his former roommate and friend, who will be at Saturday’s show. He considers Callihan to be family.

”Since he introduced me to wrestling, I really wanted (my final opponent) to be Sami,” Ganger said. “But wrestling Alex means so much.”

    After the shooting

Most of the victims of the shooting were taken to Grandview Medical Center, blocks from the Oregon District. Many walked there.

In his teens, Ganger was told by doctors that he had epilepsy. One of the triggers for seizures was stress. After arriving at the hospital, he had several seizures and was sedated by physicians. He slept for two days after the shooting.

When he was released by doctors, he demanded to be taken to Ned Pepper’s before going home. He hobbled into the bar on crutches and was greeted by the staff, all of whom survived.

The shooting sparked a decline in his mental health. Ganger couldn’t stand crowds. When he did venture out in public, he would see visions of the shooter in crowds. He was invited by All Elite Wrestling to be a special guest at its inaugural Double or Nothing pay-per-view, but the ordeal presented by his mental health kept him from attending.

”It changed my life dramatically,” Ganger said. “I had PTSD, I didn’t sleep well.”

    Tragedy sparks new mission, career

Since the shooting, Ganger became a mental health counselor and a caseworker. He was diagnosed with superior survivor’s guilt. While Ganger saved dozens, the loss of those who were killed were too much for him to bear. One woman, who was killed in front of him on the patio of the bar, was staring at him the moment she was shot. They were friends.

Ganger said his interactions were mixed. With the press, reporters were friendly and showed appreciation for his actions . He recalled one reporter telling him how grateful he was he lived in the same community as Ganger.

Other interactions weren’t so friendly. He often received social media messages blaming him for not saving a relative or friend. People in public would criticize him for how he handled the situation.

What kept his hopes up the most was messages he received from military members and law enforcement. Officers from Las Vegas and Virginia, who responded to mass shootings, praised Ganger for his quick thinking and bravery. Military members who had returned from deployment also thanked him for what he did for the city.

In his darkest moments he became suicidal, dealing with PTSD, survivor’s guilt and depression, even as he took classes to become a counselor. What turned his life around was the birth of his 5-year-old daughter.

”My daughter, she’s 5 and she saved my life,” Ganger said. “I was told I could never have kids, and here I am, at 42 years old, having a daughter. She saved me.”

    You’ve done so much

Ganger kept receiving calls and voice mails from people saying they worked for NXT, World Wrestling Entertainment’s then developmental brand. Still wrestling, Ganger dismissed the calls as ribs from fellow wrestlers. He found out later one of the calls was from Paul Levesque.

“Sami (Callihan) called me,” Ganger said. “He just says, ‘Pick up your phone. It’s real, dude.”

In a better place mentally by that time, Ganger made the trip to Florida with a friend who was a nurse. After missing a chance to see AEW, he was determined to make it to NXT.

”When AEW contacted me to come to Chicago, it was too much for me, the crowd was too much for me,” Ganger said. “I felt horrible about it. I wish I could have went. I just wasn’t in the right mental state.”

Over a couple days, Ganger was shown the WWE Performance Center.

He walked backstage before a taping and saw Tommaso Ciampa talking with a group of wrestlers and staffers. Ciampa saw Ganger, walked up to him and grabbed him in a bear hug. He called Ganger, “Mr. Hero”, and then introduced him to everyone there.

Ganger said Ciampa’s embrace and warm greeting was the highlight of his trip.

”That gentleman made me feel so awesome,” Ganger said.

Ganger was interviewed with Paul Levesque, who ran NXT at the time. He was invited backstage to watch the show with NXT staffers Shawn Michaels, Jeremy Borash and Brian “Road Dogg” Armstrong.

Levesque entered the ring before the taping was set to begin. He gave a speech while the screen showed news clips of the Oregon District shooting and interview footage of Ganger.

Ganger, confused, turned to Borash, who told him, “We forgot to tell you, but you’re going to the ring.

Levesque introduced Ganger as “one of their own,” a professional wrestler. Ganger went down to the ring and climbed the steps to the apron. Levesque mentioned, “Hey, you even remembered to wipe your feet.”

Ganger was presented with an NXT title belt. Video of the presentation was put on WWE’s website and made news across the country.

Before the presentation ended, Levesque grabbed Ganger for a private conversation.

“It was touching,” Ganger said. “He told me he loved me and respected me. It was a private moment.”

Most of the NXT staffers didn’t know why Ganger was at the event until the presentation. When he reached the back, he was immediately grabbed by Michaels. who

Michaels took him outside with a rosary in his hand and grabbed Ganger’s and began praying for him.

Weeks later, Mick Foley was on tour and was scheduled for an appearance at a Dayton-area comedy club. Ganger received an invite from Foley, one of his biggest inspirations. Foley wanted to talk to him personally.

”He told me, what you did that night was tremendous not just for the people there but for the wrestling world,” Ganger said. “We get so much bad advertising because people think all wrestlers are scumbags. You showed we are people. And we can do tremendous things. You’ve done so much.”

Ganger has revisited the shooting regularly. After years of dealing with the after effects he said his one regret was not reaching out to someone sooner, “Or just talked to someone.”

He tried handling the emotions and the mental toll like traditional men were taught – by bottling it up. Later, he was overwhelmed with thoughts of suicide. He said that was a mistake. Ganger said anyone who suffers a traumatic event should seek help or counseling immediately.

”I needed help a lot sooner than later,” Ganger said. “I wish I had talked about what was going on, but I was a traditional man and we are taught to keep our feelings to ourselves. I wouldn’t have been suicidal, I wouldn’t have talked about taking my own life. I wish I had asked for help sooner.”

Ganger said one source of help was surprising – the wrestling business. Whether it was his friends he wrestled with for 20 years in Ohio or stars in other states and on national TV, the business he gave his blood and body to gave back when he needed it most.

  • Kyle Fletcher Injured, TNT Championship Vacated; Casino Gauntlet Set for AEW Dynasty

Kyle Fletcher Injured, TNT Championship Vacated; Casino Gauntlet Set for AEW Dynasty

Tony Khan announced on Wednesday’s AEW Dynamite that Kyle Fletcher is expected to miss several months of action due to a meniscus injury, along with additional undisclosed injuries sustained during the March 28 episode of AEW Collision.

As a result, the TNT Championship has been vacated. A Casino Gauntlet match will take place at AEW Dynasty on April 12 in Vancouver to crown a new champion.

Per Fightful Select, Fletcher’s meniscus injury alone would sideline him for quite some time, with the additional injuries expected to extend his recovery further. He had held the TNT Championship for 54 days, winning the title for the second time on the February 11 edition of Dynamite. Marq Quen is also out long-term with a separate injury.

Ciampa vs. Mascara Dorada to Determine First Entrant

To set the Casino Gauntlet field, Tommaso Ciampa will face Mascara Dorada later on tonight’s Dynamite. The winner earns the first entry spot in the match at AEW Dynasty on April 12 in Vancouver.

  • Tommaso Ciampa Turns Heel, Mirrors Johnny Gargano Betrayal

Tommaso Ciampa recently turned heel on Mark Briscoe during the March 7th episode of AEW Collision, attacking Briscoe after a match. The turn came after weeks of Ciampa portraying a babyface character. The attack echoed Ciampa\’s previous DIY breakup with Johnny Gargano in WWE NXT.

Ciampa suffered a defeat at the hands of Daniel Garcia after being distracted by Briscoe, who was on commentary. Following the match, Ciampa confronted Briscoe. However, initially they appeared to reconcile. FTR then confronted Ciampa but Briscoe intervened. Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler left the ramp together.

    Tommaso Ciampa Turns Heel

Ciampa then attacked Briscoe on the ramp, throwing him into the video screen. He followed up with a running knee strike. FTR watched and appeared to approve of Ciampa\’s actions. The whole sequence was the exact replica of the moment when he had turned on Johnny Gargano in WWE.

Ciampa had joined All Elite Wrestling on the January 28th, 2026, episode of Dynamite. Just three days later, he captured the AEW TNT Championship by defeating Mark Briscoe. However, his title run didn’t last long as it was ended by Kyle Fletcher after 11 days.

  • Tommaso Ciampa Breaks Silence On Unexpected TNT Title Loss

Tommaso Ciampa is taking just one day off.

The Psycho Killer suffered an unexpected loss at this week\’s episode of Dynamite. Kyle Fletcher beat him at the show, ending the former WWE star\’s reign with the TNT Championship at just 11 days.

The wrestling veteran broke his silence on the loss on Instagram, posting a photo of himself with the belt. Tommaso Ciampa noted that he is giving himself just one night to sit with his emotions, and he is going to get back to work the next day:

\”11 days. I’ll give myself one night to reflect. One night to sit with my emotions. But when that sun rises, we get back to work. No excuses. No what ifs. No regrets. Any given Sunday. AEW. Where the best wrestle. Congratulations, Kyle Fletcher.\”

AEW will be travelling to Australia for the Grand Slam event after Dynamite, and having the Australian native Fletcher walking into the show as champion was probably the biggest reason behind the title change.

There is no word on what the company is planning for Ciampa after this loss and we will have to see if he gets another shot at the championship anytime soon.

  • Tommaso Ciampa\’s Daughter Had The Most Adorable Reaction To His AEW Jump

Tommaso Ciampa\’s daughter is the best.

The newest AEW signee recently spoke to Vice for an interview. He talked about things such as the development of his new theme music, people he wants to face in Tony Khan\’s promotion and more.

During the interview, the former NXT Champion also discussed his family\’s reaction to his AEW move. Specifically, Tommaso Ciampa revealed that his 7-year-old daughter Willow, was worried for him, thinking that people may not be kind to her father in his new home. The wrestling veteran noted that Willow, who has been at many shows with him, was also sad that she will not be able to meet some of her favorite people from the WWE roster anymore:

“She was super nervous for me when we had to break the news to her. She would come sometimes and she has met everybody. We’ve had parties, we’ve gone to parties. In her little seven-year-old mind, it was like I’m starting a new school. ‘What if you don’t know anyone? What if they’re not nice to you?’ She got emotional. Even some of the people she was going to miss, ‘The Hair Boys’, is Pretty Deadly, ‘Kiss Lips’, which is Bianca [Belair]. ‘Neck Tattoo Boy’, which is Cody. She has nicknames for everybody, so she was just sad.\”

It Immediately Changed How She Views This: Tommaso Ciampa

Thankfully, the people at AEW did everything they could to make the little one more confident about the company. Tommaso Ciampa named Mark Briscoe and Willow Nightingale as people who helped his daughter get comfortable at his new workplace on the day of his debut:

\”I’m so happy I brought her for the first one because it immediately changed how she views this. One, she bumped into a lot of people she’s already met and known. But two, Mark Briscoe, I think he’s got six or seven children, he’s great with kids. So charismatic, she’s meeting him and she thinks he’s just the coolest. Willow [Nightingale] has the same name; she has two titles and the coolest hair; her gear is awesome. So she’s just in love with her.”

Tommaso Ciampa, unfortunately, lost his TNT title to Kyle Fletcher on Dynamite this week. The new champion has already been booked to defend his title in a ladder match. You can check out more about it here.

  • Tommaso Ciampa Loses TNT Title After 11 Day Run

Tommaso Ciampa has dropped the TNT title.

The Psycho Killer had defeated Mark Briscoe in his AEW debut match on January 31 to win the championship and establish himself as a serious contender after his WWE exit.

He made his second title defence on this week\’s Dynamite, facing Kyle Fletcher in a hard-hitting match. Don Callis was in commentary for this bout.

The ending saw Ciampa getting a near fall after a knee strike on the young star. Fletcher came back, however, and he was able to pin the champion with a Michinoku driver and a Brainbuster combo.

The title change ends Tommaso Ciampa\’s run with the belt at just 11 days, while Kyle Fletcher begins his second reign with the belt.

The Australian native already has his first title defence set as Mark Briscoe made an appearance after this match and challenged him for a ladder match at the upcoming Grand Slam Australia event on February 14.

There is no word on what the company is planning for Ciampa after this unexpected loss, but it\’s possible that we will see him getting a rematch for the belt in future.

  • Tommaso Ciampa Planned Psycho Killer Return for Years, Secret AEW Plans

Tommaso Ciampa detailed the meticulous planning behind his AEW debut and Psycho Killer return during an appearance on Close Up with Renee Paquette. The TNT Champion revealed he had been sitting on the concept for years and kept his contract end date private from everyone.

\”I\’ve honestly sat on it for years. When I left Ring of Honor in 2012, when I went to the Independent Scene after that, Psycho Killer, the track Talking Heads and all that became my entrance music and it genuinely took on a life of its own.\”

The Vision He Never Got to Execute

Ciampa described himself as a \”vision board guy\” who plans 10 steps ahead. He had envisioned multiple chapters for the Psycho Killer persona that never came to fruition.

\”Forever there was just this part of me that went, I wonder how far I could have taken that. I had all these envisions of what the next chapters were. I\’m a very plan 10 steps ahead type of guy and I never got one of these through. I\’m a vision board guy.\”

    Preparation in the Dark

Ciampa said a lot of work was done before his debut was announced. He already had music, presentation, and logo concepts ready when conversations began.

\”A lot of work was being done in the dark. Like preparation. I don\’t think anything that went down the last week between Dynamite and Collision was full happenstance.

The preparation was there. The conversations, the second they start, it\’s, \’Hey I already have this music that I want, I already have this presentation that I want, this is what I envision my logo.\”

Contract Secrecy and the Texas Trip

Ciampa kept his WWE contract end date a secret from everyone, including his tag partner.

\”I was very private about that. No one knew that date. I don\’t even know that my tag partner at the time knew the specific date. I just didn\’t tell anyone. Contract ends midnight the 26th.\”

His wife suggested a family trip to a giraffe ranch in Texas, perfectly positioned between AEW Dynamite and Collision.

\”I gave the two locations to my wife. I said, \’Hey, they\’re in Texas on Wednesday and Saturday.\’ Her light bulb went off. She\’s like, \’This is insane. It\’s right in the middle of the two of them.\’ Best case scenario, this all lines up. Worst case scenario, we have this awesome family trip.\”

Once free, Ciampa said AEW moved quickly.

\”Tuesday happened, it was hey let\’s connect you with Mikey Ruckus for music, let\’s connect you with Mike for Tron. Let\’s just get this ball rolling.\”

Ciampa made his AEW debut by answering Mark Briscoe\’s TNT Championship open challenge, and won the title in his first AEW match.

  • Tony Khan On Signing Tommaso Ciampa: It Reflects Very Well On AEW

Tony Khan is excited to see Tommaso Ciampa in his company.

The AEW President wasted no time in signing the former NXT Champion after he announced his WWE exit. The wrestling veteran made his debut for the promotion on the first AEW show after becoming a free agent. This move seems to be paying off for the company as Ciampa has already established himself as a major player, winning the TNT title in his very first match under the banner.

During a recent interview with Josh Martinez, the wrestling executive was asked about the latest AEW signing. Tony Khan claimed that Ciampa\’s arrival reflects very well on AEW as a place where the best wrestle:

“I think that AEW is where the best wrestle, and Tommaso Ciampa is a fantastic wrestler. Our fans like to see the very best wrestling against the very best. And so, Tommaso Ciampa is somebody that can come into AEW immediately. Now, he’s the TNT Champion. It reflects very well on AEW and our media partners to have such a fantastic wrestler with his credentials coming into the AEW company.\”

Are You A Great Wrestler? : Tony Khan

Tony Khan then mentioned that while Ciampa had not wrestled for AEW before this, he has a long history with ROH. He noted that Tommaso Ciampa is now on the short list of people who have held both the ROH TV Title and the TNT Championship, including Samoa Joe and Brody King:

\”And I think that as a TNT Champion, or in any role in AEW, the most important thing when we bring somebody in like a Tommaso Ciampa is: are you a wrestler? Are you a great wrestler? Is there a place for you here where you can really add to the AEW roster and set up great matches for the future? And Tommaso Ciampa fits that really to a tee, literally. I think he will be a great addition for us, and now I’m very excited that he’s the TNT Champion in AEW.”

The new TNT Champion announced the continuation of the Open Challenge for the title on Dynamite this week. It was then revealed that both Roderick Strong and Claudio Castagnoli have answered the challenge, and a triple threat match will be taking place on Collision with the title on the line.

  • Tommaso Ciamoa Reveals First Impression of Tony Khan

Tommaso Ciampa has revealed what he thought about Tony Khan the first time they met.

The Psycho Killer made his surprise AEW debut on this week\’s episode of Dynamite. The appearance came about a week after he announced his departure from WWE, and only a couple of days after the company officially moved him to the alumni.

During his recent interview with SHAK Wrestling, the former NXT Champion talked about the whole sequence of events. Tommaso Ciampa noted that his AEW debut was put together in just 48 hours, and he only officially met the AEW President on the day of his debut:

“It’s the first time I met Tony. We briefly chatted and immediately I was like, wow, this guy’s passion is contagious. He loves his roster, his fan base. He loves All Elite Wrestling. He loves professional wrestling in general. I mean, it’s crazy how passionate he is, and even in that quick, brief encounter, I was like, yeah, you made the right choice.”

The former WWE star answered the open challenge issued by TNT Champion Mark Briscoe during his Dynamite appearance. Though the company decided to hold off on his in-ring debut, and his match with Briscoe is set to take place on this week\’s Collision instead.

During the same interview, Tommaso Ciampa also discussed the circumstances surrounding his WWE exit. You can check out more of what he said here.

  • Tommaso Ciampa Reveals If He Was Fired From WWE

Tommaso Ciampa says his WWE exit was an amicable one.

WWE has received criticism over its treatment of contracts in the past few months. Stars such as R-Truth and Karrion Kross have opened up about the company\’s unfair negotiation tactics, where they offer contract renewals only at the last minute to try and lock people into subpar deals.

During a recent interview with CBS Sports, Tommaso Ciampa, who recently left the promotion for AEW, opened up about his own WWE departure. He confirmed that at least in his case, the officials had reached out about a renewal months in advance, and that his exit came on friendly terms:

\”We chatted a handful of times in the last two or three months. I just needed to do what was right for my wife and me, I have not one bad word to say about WWE. They gave me an incredible opportunity and platform. Over the last 10 years, I learned a ton. I evolved a ton. It\’s time for me to take all that and really apply it. The biggest part was the leap.\”

Tommaso Ciampa later expanded on his previous comments about the reason he decided to join AEW. The former DIY member mentioned how for the past few years he had been hearing that his NXT run was his best work, a sentiment he did not agree with.

The two choices he had was to continue being comfortable in WWE or take a chance on himself to prove that he was a better performer than people were giving him credit for, and he chose the latter.

  • Tommaso Ciampa Explains Jumping Ship To AEW

Tommaso Ciampa has revealed why he left WWE.

The former NXT Champion made his surprise AEW debut at this week\’s Dynamite, only days after announcing the end of his 11-year stint with WWE.

During an interview with Sports Illustrated, the wrestling veteran explained the reasoning behind this decision. Tommaso Ciampa mentioned that there wasn\’t a single factor or incident that led to this change. It\’s something he had been thinking about as his WWE contract was coming up, and he felt like AEW was the right place for him to be in this stage of career:

“If I wrestled in the 90s, I’d wanna be a part of ECW… Early 2000s, you wanna be a part of Ring of Honor. I was lucky I got to do that a little bit. 2010s, I think for me at least, I wanted to be part of NXT Black and Gold. And when I looked at the landscape of professional wrestling in the 2020s… the answer was AEW, man. That’s what I want to be a part of.”

The 40-year-old talked about his lacklustre main roster run since his 2022 Raw debut. Tommaso Ciampa believed that he was actually a better performer now than a few years ago, but people were not giving him the credit for it. The desire to prove himself as such, led to him jumping ship:

“For a long time, I had to listen to people tell me, not so much directly to my face but more so online, that 2018 was prime Ciampa. I’m a hundred times better now than I was then. That was nothing. That was absolutely nothing.

I’m physically better. I’m mentally sharper. My storytelling, my psychology is on a whole different level than it was back then… what people are about to see is going to blow their minds. It’s gonna shock the world, because I finally have a shot to find out if I’m as good as I think I am.”

Tommaso Ciampa answered the open challenge issued by TNT Champion Mark Briscoe upon his AEW debut. The match between the two is set to take place on AEW Collision this Saturday.

  • Tommaso Ciampa Files New Trademarks For Post-WWE Career

Tommaso Ciampa is preparing for life after WWE.

The former NXT champion recently filed trademark for the terms \’Psycho Killer\’ and \’Psycho King\’ for use on various merchandise and \’entertainment in the nature of wrestling contests.\’

These nicknames originate from Ciampa\’s heel run in NXT, which began with him turning on his partner Johnny Gargano at NXT TakeOver: Chicago in 2017. Their tag team run and the subsequent rivalry is considered to be one of the highlights of the Black & Gold era of the development brand.

The 40-year-old announced his departure from WWE on January 21, confirming that he will be leaving the promotion once his current deal expires.

The wrestling veteran did not reveal the exact date he will become a free agent. Tommaso Ciampa did confirm that he will be available for appearances, suggesting that he is not planning to sign a new contract with a different promotion immediately after his WWE departure.

Ciampa\’s release will mark the end of his 11-year WWE run as well as his partnership with Gargano. You can check out what the fellow DIY member said about his partner\’s announcement here.

  • Johnny Gargano Reacts to Tommaso Ciampa WWE Exit With Emotional Post

Johnny Gargano has responded to Tommaso Ciampa\’s WWE departure announcement with a poignant Instagram post that speaks volumes without saying a word.

Shortly after Ciampa confirmed his exit on January 21, Gargano shared a photo of himself backstage watching his longtime tag team partner on a television screen. The caption consisted of a single black heart emoji—a fitting tribute that mirrors Ciampa\’s own heartfelt goodbye to his \”black and gold\” NXT family.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/DTx1ERSjbSL/

The partnership spanned over a decade. Gargano and Ciampa first teamed together in the NXT Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic in September 2015, officially signing with WWE in April 2016. They\’ve been riding together ever since, from becoming NXT Tag Team Champions to their legendary rivalry that defined black-and-gold NXT, and eventually reuniting to capture the WWE Tag Team Championship twice on the main roster.

Ciampa\’s final WWE match came on the December 19 episode of SmackDown, where DIY lost to Ilja Dragunov and Carmelo Hayes. Since then, Gargano has continued appearing on SmackDown alongside his wife Candice LeRae, transitioning into a singles role.

In his departure statement, Ciampa wrote that his contract will end \”very soon\” and specifically thanked the black and gold era that made him a star: \”I would be remiss not to give a special thank you to my black and gold family. You will forever hold an incredibly special place in my heart.\”

Gargano\’s black heart emoji response suggests those feelings are mutual.

  • Tommaso Ciampa Exiting WWE After 11 Years

Tommaso Ciampa has announced his WWE departure.

The former NXT champion confirmed on Instagram that he will be exiting the company after his 11-year run with the promotion, when his current contract comes to an end.

The wrestling veteran mentioned that he is an incredibly lucky person who has been able to live his dreams. He thanked the WWE team as well as the fans for this opportunity, giving a special shoutout to the Black & Gold era of NXT:

Ciampa did not reveal whether he had made the decision on his own or if the company decided not to renew his deal like other recent departures. He confirmed that he will be taking outside bookings, suggesting that he does not have an immediate plan to join AEW or any other prominent promotion.

The highlight of Tommaso Ciampa\’s WWE career was his NXT run with Johnny Gargano as DIY and the subsequent feud between the two.  The duo had reunited on the main roster in 2022 and have had multiple runs with the tag titles, both in NXT and on the main roster.

Gargano is believed to be staying with the company since he was not mentioned in Ciampa\’s announcement, which would effectively mean the end of their tag team as well.
