Former WWE President Launches Pro Sumo Wrestling League

Former WWE President Stuart Snyder is making a major business bet on combat sports, launching the Sumo Championship League (SCL), a new professional sumo wrestling league built to bring one of the world’s oldest sports to American arenas. Snyder, who served as President of WWE/WWF from 2000 to 2001 and oversaw the company’s purchase of WCW, is positioning SCL as the first modern Western league structure ever designed around professional sumo.

The league announced its launch via press release earlier today, with plans to stage live events across major U.S. markets beginning in fall 2026.

SCL plans to build the sport around a full professional season, with wrestlers competing year-round for standings, prize money, and championship positioning. The schedule is set to culminate in a final championship event featuring the league’s top-ranked competitors.

What The Sumo Championship League Plans To Offer

The Atlanta-based league outlined its core pillars in the announcement, framing the product as authentic, unscripted competition aimed at sports fans, newcomers, and families.

    • Live professional league events across major U.S. markets beginning in fall 2026
    • Authentic, unscripted sumo competition with season-long rankings and championship competition
    • Elite heavyweight athletes from around the world, including accomplished sumo competitors and crossover athletes
    • A family-friendly live-event experience

Snyder, who serves as Chairman and CEO, explained why he believes there is room for a structured league outside Japan.

“Sumo is one of the world’s oldest and most recognizable sports, with organized competition and passionate fans across the globe,” Snyder said. “What it has never had is a modern professional league structure designed to introduce the sport to broader audiences outside Japan.”

“We believe there is an opportunity to build a sustainable sports property around authentic competition, elite athletes and a live-event experience that respects the heritage of sumo while making the sport more accessible to modern audiences.”

The Executives And Money Behind The League

SCL was co-founded by Snyder and veteran producer Toper Taylor. Beyond his WWE tenure, Snyder previously served as president and COO of Feld Entertainment and led Turner Broadcasting’s Animation, Young Adults and Kids Media division, overseeing Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang. Taylor is a multiple Emmy Award-winning producer and former William Morris Agency talent agent who has produced or overseen more than 15,000 television episodes.

The company said it has secured an initial funding round to support the launch, with a current valuation of $25 million. SCL plans to generate revenue through live events, sponsorships, media rights, merchandise, licensing, and future international expansion.

For its roster, the league intends to recruit internationally across multiple athletic backgrounds, including accomplished sumo competitors, former professional football players, wrestlers, strongmen, and other heavyweight athletes.

“There are talented sumo athletes competing all over the world today, but there has never been a professional league structure designed to bring them together under one banner,” said Taylor, who serves as COO. “Our goal is to create a platform where athletes can compete at the highest level, build their profiles, develop rivalries and help introduce the sport to entirely new audiences.”
