Stephen A. Smith Could Be Headed for a WWE Role

Stephen A. Smith’s involvement with WWE may be moving beyond promotional appearances and into something more significant, with Dave Meltzer reporting serious internal discussions about working with the ESPN personality and widespread support for the idea from people within the company.

Meltzer discussed the situation on Wrestling Observer Radio, noting a notable difference between reactions to Smith and to Pat McAfee’s involvement in the WrestleMania 42 build.

The internal enthusiasm for Smith is notable, given the well-documented unhappiness among WWE staff over McAfee’s involvement in WrestleMania 42, which was reportedly pushed by TKO CEO Ari Emanuel rather than Triple H’s creative team. That the same group of people who objected to McAfee are actively in favor of Smith suggests a meaningful distinction in how he is perceived within the company.

Smith has already established a presence in WWE’s orbit. He collaborated with the promotion in the build to WrestleMania 42 through ESPN, with Danhausen cursing him ahead of Night One and Smith himself appearing in the crowd at the show where he was met with boos from the audience. ESPN Unlimited has been broadcasting WWE premium live events in the United States since Wrestlepalooza in September 2025.

WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select previously reported that ESPN sources were pleased and enthusiastic about the prospect of Smith becoming more formally involved in the WWE partnership, with a specific payoff to his involvement expected to materialize in summer 2026.

Stephen A. Smith Rejects Danhausen’s Apology Demand

Stephen A. Smith has rejected demands from WWE superstar Danhausen to remove a curse placed on the ESPN personality.

The exchange unfolded on social media after Danhausen used his signature “You…Are…Cursed!” catchphrase on Smith.

Danhausen has been liberally using his curse gimmick on WWE television, potentially running out of roster members to target. The wrestler apparently decided to expand his cursing beyond the wrestling world by directing it at the prominent sports commentator.

Danhausen had “cursed” the ESPN analyst during the April 17 episode of ESPN First Take. Following the curse, Smith’s beloved New York Knicks have dropped two out of three games to the Atlanta Hawks.

Now, the former AEW star wrote on X:

“Stephen A. Smith APOLOGIZE and Danhausen will think about maybe possibly pondering lifting your curse,” he wrote. “Also send human money. ESPN First Take.”

    Smith’s Response to the Curse

Smith has now responded to Danhausen’s curse removal demands. He responded:

“I’m not apologizing for a damn thing Danhausen,” he fired back. “Not a damn thing. Curse or no curse, the Knicks have NO BUSINESS losing this series to the Hawks — no matter how good that young team is. No business.”

“If the Knicks lose this series, heads need to roll. Period. President! GM! Coach! Players! Even the damn Dance Team! To hell with all that superstitious stuff. The Knicks need to handle their damn business. They had better not lose this series, damnit. I swear they better not!”

Whether this exchange leads to any further interaction between Smith and Danhausen remains to be seen.
