Mistico Injury Update: CMLL Star Still Sidelined

Mistico remains on the shelf, and the quick return floated for the luchador has not materialized. The 2025 Wrestling Observer Newsletter Wrestler of the Year was pulled from CMLL programming on May 18 and has not been booked since.

Mistico appeared on crutches at CMLL’s Lunes Clasico show in Arena Puebla, after the promotion announced earlier that day that medical advice ruled him out of the card. He had been set to team with Sky Team partner Neon against Hechicero and Rocky Romero in the main event, with Esfinge taking his place.

Rather than skip the building, Mistico still traveled to Puebla to apologize to fans in person and vowed the city would be his first stop once he is healthy. The injury has not been officially detailed, though SuperLuchas reports it is believed to be a knee issue with no recovery timetable set. The problem is said to have flared up at a recent appearance in Monterrey.

On a recent Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said he had been told Mistico could return fast, pointing to Friday’s Arena Mexico show as a possibility and playing down the chance of a lengthy absence.

“I have been told Mistico could be back as early as Friday. We’ll see, but it’s not gonna be a long-term thing, I don’t think. Put it this way, they are under the impression he’s coming back soon.”

That Friday has come and gone. Mistico was not part of the May 22 Viernes Espectacular at Arena Mexico, a card headlined by Bandido defending the Ring of Honor World Championship against Volador Jr. CMLL has not announced an updated timeline.

A Costly Absence For CMLL’s Biggest Draw

Time on the sidelines carries real weight for a wrestler doing as much as Mistico is right now. He signed a dual CMLL and AEW deal earlier this year, holds the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship with El Desperado, and is the reigning CMLL World Light Heavyweight Champion.

He has also been the company’s most dependable box-office draw, routinely selling out Arena Mexico. Meltzer made the stakes plain on the same broadcast, calling Mistico “the most valuable guy in wrestling.”

    BTS Makes Unexpected Wrestling Appearance

K-pop group BTS made an unexpected wrestling stop on their ongoing tour as they attended CMLL’s May 8 show in Arena Mexico.

The global superstars are currently on their Arirang world tour, with Mexico being their latest destination. They performed a concert in the Estadio GNP Seguros Stadium in Mexico City on May 7th, which included dancers wearing Lucha masks. The group further showed their love for the Mexican tradition by attending the CMLL show on their one day off between the concerts.

The company acknowledged their presence, and various Luchadors were seen interacting with BTS during the event. This included Mistico wearing a BTS jacket which was then worn by the group on the second day of their concert on May 9:

BTS, consisting of Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook, are one of the most popular acts in the world. They are the best-selling musical group in the history of South Korea. After performing in the Tokyo Dome last month as part of their tour, the band is set to return to US for shows in places such as Stanford and Las Vegas later this month.

New Champion Signs With AEW After Revolution

    Mistico is All Elite.

Tonight’s AEW Revolution PPV saw the trio of Kazuchika Okada, Kyle Fletcher, & Mark Davis defending their Trios Championship against the team of JetSpeed and Mistico.

The bout featured a lot of fast-paced action. At one point, Davis tried to use the title belts for their advantage after distracting the referee with a steel chair, but he couldn’t get the job done.

The ending of the bout saw Mistico sending Okada to the floor with a tornillo. The masked star then took Kyle Fletcher out with a La Mistica as well. Mike Bailey took advantage of the situation with a superkick to Davis. His partner, Kevin Knight, finally pinned the Don Callis Family member with a UFO splash for the titles.

As the trio celebrated their victory, a graphic confirming that Mistico was the latest talent to join the AEW roster was shown. Tony Khan later posted the same as well.

Apart from this, tonight’s show featured a number of other big moments, including the surprise return of a veteran tag team. You can check out more about it here.

  • Mistico on MLW Opera Cup Milestone, Bad Bunny & 2026 Goals

Mistico has emerged as one of the biggest names in lucha libre over the last 25 years. The star brings a unique aura to every venue he appears. It’s what makes him arguably CMLL’s top draw. His visibility extends beyond Arena Mexico working for promotions around the world including Major League Wrestling.

Mistico, a former MLW World Middleweight Champion, went on to win the Opera Cup by defeating KENTA at Fightland in 2024. Then he made history once again by overcoming Volador Jr. in the finals of the 2025 tournament at the MLW x Don Gato Tequila live special in November. The iconic performer became the first to win the Opera Cup twice in the modern era and consecutively.

“I’m so happy to be the first Mexican luchador to win the Opera Cup and back-to-back,” he said “It was a great match against Volador. It was so great for me that I took the victory a couple of months ago. With MLW, I’m so grateful to them and all the fans that support me…I’m ready for what is coming up.”

Despite having such a strong year, Mistico remains humble. He is also dedicated to testing his skills against the best. Among them was his standout matches versus Austin Aries, MJF and Will Ospreay. His goals for 2026 are well defined.

“Something I want to achieve in the next year is the MLW World Heavyweight Championship,” Mistico said. “It’s something I’m looking forward to next year. It’s something I would like to have an opportunity for in the future. Again, I’m so grateful to have the support of the fans. It’s important to have that support at all MLW shows.

\”I love lucha libre. It’s a part of my life and it’s something I want to bring in every show. It doesn’t matter where it is. This relationship is so important for me, this relationship between MLW and CMLL, to bring everything. I want to have some more important victories in my career.”

On December 9, Mistico gained more mainstream popularity when Bad Bunny wore a Mistico mask to disguise his identity at CMLL event. The company confirmed the Puerto Rican mega star was front row in the “King of Silver and Gold” mask while witnessing the action inside Arena Mexico. For the luchador, the connection to the fans, whether they are multi-platinum recording artists or not, is key.

“Bad Bunny, a huge artist and so famous. It was so important to me that he wore my mask…” he said.

Mistico attributes his success to staying prepared. He treats every match the same. Adding, “Despite being at a great level, I’m still preparing for all the matches for all the shows. It doesn’t matter where it is. I want to bring everything to prove why I love lucha libre and why it’s part of my life. I’m so grateful to have the support of the fans.”

The cross-promotional name looks forward to building on the momentum created in 2025. Mistico looks to make the most of every opportunity. At the top of the list right out of the gate is MLW’s upcoming Apocalypto 2026 show on February 7. The event will feature CMLL talent sure to electrify the crowd at the Cicero Stadium, just outside of Chicago.

“I’m open to face any luchador that wants to face Mistico in CMLL or another company all around the world with all these relationships,” he said. “…I want 2026 to be better for Mistico and want to do this with the relationship with MLW.”
