Cody Rhodes Offers Gunther Rematch After Controversial Finish At WWE Clash In Italy

Cody Rhodes has acknowledged the controversy surrounding the finish to the Undisputed WWE Championship match against Gunther at WWE Clash In Italy.

‘The American Nightmare’ successfully retained the title in Turin. However, the finish was immediately called into question after replays showed Gunther’s foot under the bottom rope during the pinfall.

During the post-show media scrum, Rhodes admitted he did not notice the rope break in the moment but saw it clearly on replay. He then offered Gunther a rematch on the spot.

“I didn’t see it in the moment, but I definitely saw it in the replay. If Gunther wants a rematch, I would do a rematch with Gunther right here, right now. … If anyone deserves one, he certainly deserves one. I understand. Hey, a win is a win. But that’s not how you want to do it, especially in front of a wonderful crowd like this. If he wants one, I’m here for it.”

Backstage footage also showed Gunther storming off and throwing a water bottle in frustration after arguing with the referee, making clear he views the result as unfinished business.

Rhodes had entered the match as a slight favorite, and GUNTHER had vowed to take the title heading into the event.

  • Gunther Vows To Beat Cody Rhodes At WWE Clash In Italy

Gunther Vows To Beat Cody Rhodes At WWE Clash In Italy

Gunther says he’s walking out of WWE Clash in Italy as the new Undisputed WWE Champion, telling ESPN’s Get Up he’s never been more prepared for a match than he is for Sunday’s title challenge against Cody Rhodes in Turin.

“I’m not concerned about Cody. I’m not concerned about passing on a message. I know what I do. I’m in the best shape of my life. I’m prepared mentally and physically. I’m at the highest performance level I’ve ever performed at. And walking into Italy, it’s going to be a very difficult situation for Cody, and it’s going to be a very enjoyable situation for me because I’m going to walk out with the title.”

The Ring General earned the shot by cashing in a favor owed to him by Paul Heyman, a sequence that Heyman finally revealed on SmackDown before the match was made official. Gunther framed the entire build as a single-minded pursuit of the championship, with no interest in the back-and-forth that has defined the feud.

Asked whether ending Cody’s career was the goal, Gunther kept his focus on the belt rather than the body count. “He’s still got some years ahead of him, I would say. But my focus is not, I’m not concerned with his career. The only thing I’m concerned about is walking out of Italy as the new champion, and that’s the most important goal.”

That certainty extends to his read on the matchup itself. Gunther made clear he believes the gap between the two is settled the moment the contest starts, regardless of what Rhodes says in the build.

The match is the locked-in feature of the weekend and opens the ESPN broadcast hour alongside Rhea Ripley vs. Jade Cargill. Clash in Italy streams Sunday, May 31 from the Inalpi Arena in Turin, with the first hour airing on ESPN and the remainder on ESPN Unlimited.

  • Gunther Calls Oba Femi A ‘Standout Talent’ And Teases Future Match

Gunther Calls Oba Femi A ‘Standout Talent’ And Teases Future Match

Gunther has praised Oba Femi as a standout talent while explaining exactly why a future match between the two would be unlike anything fans have seen from Femi so far.

Speaking on the No Contest Wrestling Podcast, Gunther acknowledged Femi’s rapid rise while noting the pressure that comes with it.

“I honestly don’t really spend too much time on looking what the other ones do. But I always keep an eye on the big picture and obviously Oba is a standout talent. I think in the short time he’s been in the company, he’s taken huge steps. But I think that’s also, we will see how he deals with that. That’s a big burden or a big responsibility right from the get go. I want to see him succeed in that, because I think he’s an amazing talent and the future is very bright for him. I hope he maintains that, stays around, so when it comes down to us two, he’s gonna be ready for it.”

Gunther addressed a common misconception about how a physical matchup between the two would actually play out, making clear it would not be a power vs. power contest.

“I’m tall and I’m a heavyweight, but people often, when they think about matches with Oba, it’s not gonna be like how Oba and Brock is. I wouldn’t meet up with Oba on a physical level. He’s stronger than I am, I don’t know if he’s a little bit taller or not, and he’s younger than I am. So it makes absolutely no sense. I think what would make that interesting is seeing me work from underneath a little bit, wrestle from underneath against a stronger opponent.”

He also identified the specific challenge a Femi match would present for the younger star.

“I think that’s a test that would be interesting for him, how to last in a longer match, how to endure 20 minutes with somebody much, much, much more experienced than him. And that’s why I need him to gain experience himself first, because when I meet him, I wanna meet him on eye level.”

Gunther challenges Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash in Italy on May 31. Femi faces Brock Lesnar in a rematch from WrestleMania 42 on the same card.

  • Cody Rhodes Sends Cold Message To Gunther Before Clash In Italy

Cody Rhodes Sends Cold Message To Gunther Before Clash In Italy

Cody Rhodes has a warning for Gunther days before the two meet for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash in Italy. Speaking with The Rich Eisen Show, the champion questioned whether his challenger is built for the kind of match waiting for him in Turin.

Rhodes pointed to Gunther’s recent run as proof, framing those wins as showcases rather than real tests.

“Gunther has that skill, and when he walks in a room and you see how physically impressive he is, he has a whole style to him that’s different from anybody else in the game. But these are the type of matches he hasn’t been in in a while. He’s been in nostalgia matches. Goldberg, AJ Styles as he was leaving the company, John Cena retiring. I think this is a prize fight. It’s a different type of match, and it’s not one he’s ready for.”

He also pushed back on the idea that an Italian crowd gives the Austrian a built-in edge, a point both men have traded on heading into the title match set after a tense SmackDown contract segment.

“There’s an element of hooliganism to it that’s beautiful that we don’t always get domestically. I think for me it’ll be fun to see if they consider my opponent Gunther one of them, because everyone keeps saying we’re going to be in Europe, but Gunther is Austrian. He’s not Italian. So I’m curious to see if it carries over. I don’t think it will.”

Rhodes carried the same confidence into a direct message for the challenger, calling the WWE Championship the richest prize in the game and ranking the event among the company’s biggest.

“He’s wrestling for the richest prize in our game at Clash in Italy, which in my mind is starting to become one of the big four. I am easy to find and I am hard to beat. If he takes the title at Clash in Italy, then he can be the one to come back on your show and have it. But I think the way it will go is hopefully I’ll show up in a few weeks and I’ll have the title in tow.”

Then came the sign-off, with Rhodes placing Gunther outside what he called the sport’s top tier, for now.

“Have fun being a tourist in Italy, Gunther. There’s a few prizefighters left in the WWE space. You’ve got a CM Punk, you’ve got a Roman Reigns, you’ve got a Jey Uso, you’ve got myself the WWE Champion, you got Seth Rollins, Drew McIntyre. Whenever you’re up against those guys, you’re gonna make the rounds. So Gunther hopefully gets into that golden circle at some point. Good luck.”

Cody Rhodes defends the Undisputed WWE Championship against Gunther on Sunday, May 31, at the Inalpi Arena in Turin. The bout headlines a card that also features two title matches airing during the ESPN simulcast hour, with at least one Hall of Famer already pitching a Rhodes loss.

  • Gunther Shuts Down Speculation Ahead Of WWE Clash In Italy

Gunther Shuts Down Speculation Ahead Of WWE Clash In Italy

Gunther has ruled out a partnership with Paul Heyman, saying his brief interactions with the legendary manager were enough to confirm he is better off working alone.

Speaking to No-Contest Wrestling, Gunther addressed the connection that formed after Heyman asked him to attack Seth Rollins on the March 30 episode of Raw.

“To be fully honest, it was very useful to have him there in that position. But those interactions in that time have been enough to make me realize that I’m better off on my own. I don’t need somebody in my ear. I always trusted my gut my whole career, and it was mostly the right decision. So I wouldn’t change that.”

The arrangement had fans speculating about a more permanent pairing given Heyman’s track record managing dominant, physically imposing performers. Heyman guided Brock Lesnar through multiple championship reigns and currently serves as Special Counsel to The Vision.

Gunther challenges Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash in Italy on May 31 at Inalpi Arena in Turin. Rhodes holds a prior victory over Gunther from Crown Jewel 2024.

  • WWE Star Posted $1,000 Bail For Ludwig Kaiser

WWE Star Posted $1,000 Bail For Ludwig Kaiser

A fellow WWE star posted bail for Ludwig Kaiser after the latter was arrested for misdemeanor battery in Orange County, Florida.

The 35-year-old was arrested after allegedly attacking a man who confronted him for getting intimate with a woman at the scene.

Kaiser whose real name is Marcel Barthel was charged with battery. The accuser claimed that the former Imperium member assaulted him after complaining about him “aggressively kissing” his girlfriend by the elevator.

Kaiser was taken into custody on May 20 after he learned of the arrest warrant the day prior. At that time, Kaiser was booked and charged with one count of battery. He was quickly released on a $1,000 bond.

Gunther Posted Bail For Ludwig Kaiser

As per court records, Kaiser’s former Imperium teammate Gunther is listed as the person who posted his bail. Gunther posted two payments of $500, totaling $1000 to cover the bail amount.

Ludwige Kaiser is scheduled for a Mask vs. Mask match against Original El Grande Americano at a Lucha Libre AAA event called “Noches de Los Grandes” on May 31.

  • Gunther Named An Unexpected WWE Star As The Best Technical Wrestler On The Roster

Gunther Named An Unexpected WWE Star As The Best Technical Wrestler On The Roster

Gunther has named Axiom as the best technical wrestler on the WWE main roster and reflected on what it means to be known as “The Career Killer” ahead of his Undisputed Championship match against Cody Rhodes at Clash in Italy.

Speaking to Netflix Italia, Gunther praised Axiom while acknowledging the NXT tag team star has not had the opportunity to fully showcase his abilities.

“I don’t think he has the chance to show it a lot at the moment, but I think Axiom actually is the best technical wrestler on the main roster right now. He’s in a tag team, he’s doing different kind of matches right now, but when he gets the chance to show his skills, I think he’s by far the best technical wrestler we have.”

On being the man who ended the careers of John Cena, Goldberg, and AJ Styles, Gunther described the experience as surreal before snapping back into professional mode.

“It feels fantastic. You’ve got to put yourself in my shoes, when I was a teenager I played video games with those characters, then I find myself in the last match of those guys like John Cena and Goldberg, AJ I obviously started following later. It’s surreal for a moment, but you kick out of it quickly, you’ve got to be focused in the moment, but it’s great to be the one that can claim I sent them away, it was time to go. I decided when it was time to go.”

  • Gunther Names The Five Wrestlers He Most Wants To Retire

Gunther Names The Five Wrestlers He Most Wants To Retire

Gunther has revealed a list of five wrestlers he most wants to retire, with Sheamus topping the list for personal reasons and Brock Lesnar making the cut for publicity value.

Speaking on Main Event Club, Gunther was asked to blind rank his retirement targets. His list in order: Sheamus, Brock Lesnar, Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, and CM Punk.

He elaborated on his top two picks.

“The thing with Brock is for publicity and is perfect. Sheamus, it’s a personal matter. I want to retire him. Subjectively, they are all good choices. On the main roster, Sheamus was my first big opponent, and he beat me up a lot. He made me earn it. I hope I can kick his ass on the way out.”

Gunther has been dubbed “The Career Killer” after ending the careers of Goldberg, John Cena, and AJ Styles. Sheamus is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury with no confirmed return timeline.

Gunther is set to challenge Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash in Italy on May 31 at Inalpi Arena in Turin.

  • Gunther Says He Doesn’t Feel Alone In WWE Without Imperium

Gunther Says He Doesn’t Feel Alone In WWE Without Imperium

Gunther says the breakup of Imperium has not left him feeling isolated in WWE, telling the Italian Wrestling Channel that working alone is nothing new for him.

Asked in a new interview whether he feels alone now that Imperium is no longer at his side, the Austrian pushed back on the premise.

“No, I don’t feel alone. I’ve been on my own most of my career. I always had partners, but then everybody goes their individual ways. That’s part of it. It was a great time. It was a great way into the main roster, but no. I’m very good how I am right now.”

Gunther formed Imperium in NXT UK alongside Ludwig Kaiser, Giovanni Vinci and Alexander Wolfe, who exited the group in 2021. Vinci was removed from the faction in April 2024, and Kaiser stopped appearing with Gunther toward the end of that year.

The separation never played out as an on-screen turn or betrayal, with the pairing quietly fading from television together.

Gunther Heads Into His Biggest WWE Match Solo

The comments land less than a week out from the biggest singles match of Gunther’s WWE tenure. He challenges Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at Clash in Italy on Sunday, May 31, at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, the company’s first Premium Live Event in Italy.

It marks the first time the two-time World Heavyweight Champion has challenged for WWE’s top prize, an opportunity Paul Heyman set up as the favor he owed The Ring General. The two men also have history, as Rhodes beat Gunther at Crown Jewel 2024 to become the inaugural Men’s Crown Jewel Champion.

This time, Gunther walks into Turin without the faction that carried him onto the main roster, and he says that suits him just fine.

  • WWE Hall of Famer Pitches Cody Rhodes Loss at WWE Clash in Italy

WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray believes Cody Rhodes should lose the Undisputed WWE Championship to Gunther at Clash in Italy.

‘The American Nightmare’ is set to put his Undisputed WWE title on the line against ‘The Ring General’ at the PLE in Turin, Italy. Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Ray shared his pitch for the match.

He argued that Cody Rhodes should be placed in a “no hope” situation heading into the match. He wants to see the champion struggle in a way that creates genuine doubt about his ability to retain.

“I want Cody to be in a situation that he’s not used to being in where there is no hope,” Ray said. “Want Cody to go to sleep this week on SmackDown, I want Cody to go to sleep next week on SmackDown. And I want Cody to go to sleep in the match in Turin, and I want Gunther to win.”

    The Reason Behind the Pitch

Ray explained that taking the title from Rhodes would create stronger heel heat for Gunther. He believes WWE should rely on traditional storytelling methods that have worked in wrestling for decades.

“I want to take the hope from Cody away,” Ray continued. “Would love to see WWE rely on things that have been working in pro wrestling for hundreds of years, and that is going with some heel heat and steam in which the babyface has no hope, and now we see Cody put in a situation where he might have to question himself.”

The veteran doesn’t believe a loss would hurt Rhodes long-term. He argued that Rhodes’ fanbase would rally behind him and support his eventual comeback.

“I believe he should defeat Cody. Will the loss affect Cody? Absolutely not, because Cody’s fanbase will rally behind him, because Cody’s fanbase has hope in Cody and they believe in Cody and they will will Cody back to his next victory,” Ray said.

Whether WWE follows Bully Ray’s booking idea remains to be seen, but the suggestion adds another layer of intrigue to the upcoming showdown between Cody Rhodes and Gunther.

With Clash in Italy shaping up as one of WWE’s biggest international events of the year, a title change would instantly shock fans and potentially elevate Gunther to an even higher level as a dominant heel champion.

  • Paul Heyman Finally Reveals Favor He Owes To Gunther

Paul Heyman Finally Reveals Favor He Owes To Gunther

Paul Heyman has revealed his favor.

Tonight’s episode of SmackDown featured a segment with Nick Aldis welcoming Paul Heyman and Gunther into his office. Aldis confirmed that the Ring General had joined the Blue Brand and handed him a contract.

Cody Rhodes’ music started playing in the arena before the former World Champion could sign the deal, however, and Gunther walked out of the frame in anger over his moment being stolen. Heyman assured Nick that he would take care of the matter before leaving.

The camera then cut to the ring with the American Nightmare getting on the mic, but Paul Heyman interrupted his promo. After some back and forth, Heyman revealed that the contract was for a WWE Championship match between Gunther and Cody for the upcoming Clash In Italy PPV. He confirmed that it was the favor he owed the wrestling veteran for saving him from Seth Rollins.

Paul started walking out on the ramp as Gunther made his way to the ring through the crowd. Though Cody Rhodes was ready for the attack this time, and he managed to fend off the career killer. The WWE Champion grabbed the mic again to end the segment and told his opponent that on SmackDown, he was easy to find but hard to beat.

  • Gunther Officially Joins SmackDown Roster, Challenges Cody Rhodes

Gunther Officially Joins SmackDown Roster, Challenges Cody Rhodes

    A new star for SmackDown.

Last week’s episode of the Blue Branded show featured the debut of Ricky Saints, who ended up in a match with his friend and the Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes. The American Nightmare picked up the victory in this bout, but he was then attacked by Gunther.

The Ring General made another appearance on the Friday Night show this week. This time, he was seen walking into Nick Aldis’ office with Paul Heyman already there.

Aldis handed a contract to Heyman, who in turn handed it to the former World Champion. Without revealing what was on the contract, Aldis told the newest member of the SmackDown roster that what he did last week was unacceptable and hoped that it was the last time they were having a conversation like this.

Before Gunther could put the ink to paper, however, Cody Rhodes’ theme song started playing on the monitor in the background, and the screen showed the arena getting ready for the WWE Champion’s entrance.

This upset the former Imperium leader who believed that the moment belonged to him, and he walked out without signing the deal. The segment ended with Heyman telling Nick that he will handle the situation.

  • Ted Turner, a better mogul from a better time, dead at 87

Ted Turner, a better mogul from a better time, dead at 87

Ted Turner, father of five, founder of Turner Networks, CNN, husband, ex-husband and lifelong partner of Jane Fonda, and lifelong pro wrestling fan, died at the age of 87 on Wednesday after a decade-long battle with Lewy Body Dementia.

Turner’s last public appearance was in 2023 at his 85th birthday party. Despite their 2001 divorce, Turner and Fonda remained partners until his death. She later played a media and cable mogul on the HBO series The Newsroom.

Turner was born in Cincinnati in 1938. His father, the owner of a large advertising business, moved the family to Georgia when Turner was 9 years old. Turner’s father died by suicide in 1963.

His children, in a CNN documentary about their father, stated he was often cold and harsh, especially during holidays and get-togethers, caused by fallout from a difficult relationship with his parents growing up. They claimed Fonda’s influence as a warm and caring motherly figure and wife changed his family life around.

A sale of his father’s billboard and advertising business funded the purchase of a UHF TV station in 1970. Originally airing reruns of movies and popular 50s and 60s TV shows and Warner Bros. Looney Tunes, the station, WJRJ-TV Ch. 17 was renamed WTCG for Turner Communications Group. It began airing Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Braves games in 1972. Turner would later purchase both teams.

Turner petitioned the FCC to put WTCG on satellite in 1976. This led to the station becoming an early channel on cable systems around the country. He later bought the call letters for WTBS and changed the name to Turner Broadcasting System. By 1980, he started CNN, with the promise it would stay on the air “until the end of the world.”

When Turner purchased the station, he also purchased the rights to air Georgia Championship Wrestling. A fan of the sport who recognized the popularity of pro wrestling in the Southeast, he later moved GCW to the Saturday 6:05 p.m. time slot, where it became a national staple for decades. Years later, GCW renamed the show World Championship Wrestling.

In 1983, a storyline featuring Roddy Piper saving veteran announcer Gordon Solie launched the show and the network into national attention. Highlights of the angle aired on local news across the country and was featured on the Entertainment Tonight syndicated TV show. The incident is considered the greatest babyface turn in wrestling history and brought about some of the highest ratings for wrestling ever on television.

GCW aired on WTBS until the infamous Black Saturday incident on July 14, 1984. After buying a controlling interest in the promotion from promoter Jim Barnett and brothers Jack and Gerry Briscoe, Vince McMahon began airing World Wrestling Federation content in the time slot.

McMahon tried buying the GCW time slot prior to his purchase of the promotion, but was rejected by Turner. After the GCW purchase, McMahon attempted to assuage an angry Turner by promising to air original programming in the slot, but instead aired clips from house shows and other WWF programming instead.

A ratings failure, angry fans began calling and writing the station wanting a return of the old product. Turner would later enter into agreements with Bill Watts to air Mid-South Wrestling and Ole Anderson, who began another Georgia wrestling territory, putting three wrestling promotions on the network at the same time. The Mid-South and Georgia programs were far more successful in the ratings than the WWF.

Losing money, McMahon approached Barnett a year later, who brokered a deal with Jim Crockett Promotions, who ran Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, to buy the time slot. At the time, Crockett was working to unify the NWA in an attempt to compete with McMahon’s monopolization of the market.

WTBS continued to grow through the 1980s as cable subscribers skyrocketed by 10s of millions per year. The growth was seen by Crockett Promotions, whose Saturday night two-hour show was one of the most popular in the country.

Fans of the station and World Championship Wrestling crossed all walks of life. Following the death of President George H.W. Bush, an aide to former North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms recalled an urgent call from the White House when the show was at its peak. He was urged to make sure then NWA World Champion Ric Flair was at the airport to greet George and Barbara Bush at the airport. The aide contacted David Crockett, whose simple response was, “He will be there.”

The President was ushered off the airport tarmac to a waiting Nature Boy, who rode with the President and First Lady to the event, according to the aide. He spent the afternoon entertaining “mega fan” Barbara Bush. While in line for food at the event, one of the President’s aides asked him where the First Lady was. The President said, “She had run off with someone named the Nature Boy.”

Crockett Promotions would later be purchased by Turner to continue airing on WTBS under the World Championship Wrestling name, which continued airing regularly on the station until 1995, when WCW Monday Nitro was launched on TNT as a direct competitor to the WWF.

Turner began having less day-to-day interaction with WCW and Turner networks after the company was purchased by Time Warner in 1996. Originally a supporter of AOL’s merger with Time Warner in 2001, Turner soured on it quickly and once blasted AOL’s chairman during a board meeting, leading to his resignation.

    Ted Turner’s Life and Legacy

Turner attended Brown University, where he was a member of the school sailing team. He was kicked out of the school for having a female member of the student body in his dorm room. The university later awarded him an honorary doctorate.

A lifelong sailor, he competed in the Olympic trials and joined the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a member of various America’s Cup teams, including the winning 1977 squad, which earned him the cover photo in Sports Illustrated.

As a sports-owner, obituaries credited him with saving professional sports in Atlanta and named him the primary influence in the city becoming one of America’s great metropolitan areas. His name hangs on a banner in the rafters of State Farm Arena.

Turner created the Goodwill Games in the 1980s as an Olympic alternative, but were unsuccessful. The event was considered a bust by critics, despite Turner’s goal of using sports to create better diplomatic relations between countries on differing sides of the Cold War.

An advocate against climate change, Turner pushed for the development of the Captain Planet cartoon to encourage kids to be environmentally friendly. He sponsored the United Nations Foundation with a $1 billion donation, a third of his $3 billion worth, in 1998. He encouraged the hiring of minorities in his companies, including MLB home run king Hank Aaron, who worked with the Atlanta Braves until his death.

He co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative, the Turner Endangered Species Fund, the Captain Planet Foundation, the Turner Foundation and worked to increase the U.S. bison population, combat global poverty and increase public interest in lowering the nuclear threat. He created TNT, Turner Classic Movies, Cartoon Network, TBS and owned what would become the greatest library in visual media.

He said selling Turner Broadcasting to Time Warner was a mistake he would always regret.

He described his father as “far right,” which influenced him becoming a member of the Young Republicans. He later became a staunch ally of progressive and civil rights causes while spending much of his wealth on fighting poverty and global instability.

He challenged Fox News founder Rupert Murdoch to a fist fight – multiple times – before the two made peace.

He bought thousands of acres of ranch land in the plains to help grow the bison population, then founded a chain of restaurants based on bison meat.

He described his experience with the U.S. Coast Guard as “pretty sweet” while receiving the U.S. Navy Memorial’s Lone Sailor Award.

After hosting a Native American dance display at company headquarters in Atlanta, he remarked that the performance was beautiful but he was afraid he would get scalped.

He once held presidential aspirations around 2016, but only for a few minutes. When he asked Fonda what she thought of him running for President, she said she would immediately leave him.

Brandi Rhodes Reacts To Gunther Attacking Cody Rhodes on WWE SmackDown

Cody Rhodes’ wife Brandi Rhodes recently came up with a humorous reaction to what went down on WWE SmackDown.

Gunther recently attacked Cody Rhodes on the latest edition of SmackDown following Rhodes’ victory over Ricky Saints. ‘The Ring General’ applied a sleeper hold and held the WWE Championship high, signaling his intentions as Rhodes’ next challenger.

Officials attempted to break up the assault, but the former World Champion continued the attack before eventually releasing the hold. He then grabbed Rhodes’ WWE Championship and held it above his head in a clear statement of intent.

    Brandi Rhodes Reacts

In an X post, Cody Rhodes’ wife Brandi Rhodes made a humorous comment that their oldest daughter, Libby, wanted to use one of her infant sister’s diapers to stink up Gunther’s bus.

“Libby wants to put one of her sisters dirty diapers on Gunther’s bus. I think that’s a good start and we can just build from there.”

    Gunther’s Recent Activity

Gunther last appeared at WrestleMania 42, where he defeated Seth Rollins. Bron Breakker played a decisive role in that match, returning to spear Rollins before the finish.

Rollins and Breakker have continued their feud since WrestleMania, with a match scheduled for next weekend at Backlash. Gunther now appears positioned to challenge Rhodes for the WWE Championship in the coming weeks.

Unexpected Name Emerges As Next Cody Rhodes Challenger on SmackDown

A new challenge for Cody Rhodes.

The Undisputed WWE Champion opened tonight’s episode of SmackDown, where he was interrupted by his longtime friend and the newest main roster member, Ricky Saints.

After some back and forth on the mic, the two friends agreed to face each other in a match. The bout surprisingly did not main event the show and it instead took place during the second hour of the episode.

The ending of the match saw Saints hitting a couple of big DDTs and going for the Roshambo. Cody, however, managed to counter the move and delivered a Cross Rhodes for the victory.

Before Cody Rhodes could recover from the punishments of the bout, Gunther appeared out of nowhere and locked the WWE Champion in the sleeper hold.

The Ring General left the ring once but climbed back in to lock an unconscious Rhodes into the hold again before the officials hit the ring and made the former World Champion retreat.

Paul Heyman was spotted talking to General Manager Nick Aldis during an earlier backstage segment. With Heyman owing a favor to Gunther, the big question is whether the two segments are related and if Heyman could be helping the former IC Champion in his quest to win the Undisputed Title.

Bron Breakker Sends Chilling Warning in First Statement Since WrestleMania 42 Return

Bron Breakker has broken his silence following his shocking return at WrestleMania 42, and he’s warning the WWE locker room that the version of himself they’re about to face is more dangerous than ever.

Breakker made his first WWE appearance since the February 2 episode of Raw on Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium, storming the ringside area and spearing Seth Rollins in half during the Seth Rollins vs. GUNTHER match.

The interference allowed GUNTHER to lock in the sleeper hold for the win, after which Breakker sprinted the length of the WrestleMania entrance ramp to deliver a second spear, then reunited with Paul Heyman at the top of the stage.

The Bad Ass had been out of action for nearly three months following emergency hernia surgery. According to a report from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, Breakker was actually cleared to compete in early April, but WWE opted to hold off rather than rush the Rollins program without a proper television build.

    Bron Breakker Talks Wrestlemania Return

On Sunday, Breakker took to Instagram with gruelling training footage shot at Fury Performance Academy in Woodstock, Georgia, his hometown. Alongside the clips, he posted a lengthy statement that doubles as a mission statement for whatever comes next.

“No matter how down that I may get. No matter how much pain I’ve had to go through. No matter how much adversity I’ve had to put myself through. All roads lead to the same place: WrestleMania.”

“I came here to this building to Fury Performance to see how close that I can get to the line. See how far I can push myself.”

“To see how much pain and suffering I can put my body through at the breaking point and how much further am I going to go? How far can I break myself down and destroy myself and push my mind in this process? How far am I willing to go? How tough really is Bron Breakker? How much of a dog really is Bron Breakker?”

“I’m gonna remind the whole world who the f**k I am.”

Breakker’s attack on Rollins wasn’t a one-off. Paul Heyman confirmed on the WrestleMania 42 Night 1 Post-Show that he was the mastermind behind the assault, and that there are “not enough consequences” coming for Rollins in the weeks ahead.

The Rollins vs. Breakker program was originally the plan for WrestleMania 42 before the hernia injury scrapped it. With Breakker now officially back and aligned with Heyman’s Vision, the match WWE put on ice last month appears to be next on the road out of Las Vegas.

WrestleMania 42 Night 2 goes live Sunday, April 19 from Allegiant Stadium, headlined by CM Punk vs. Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship. Stay tuned to SEScoops for continued WrestleMania fallout coverage.

  • Gunther On Tapping Out John Cena: ‘Worth More Than Titles’

Gunther On Tapping Out John Cena: ‘Worth More Than Titles’

Former World Champion Gunther recently stated that making 17-time World Champion John Cena tap out in his retirement match means more to him than any championship he has won.

‘The Ring General’ reflected on the controversial finish during a WWE Retrospective interview.

Cena lost his retirement match in December 2025 to Gunther via submission, a booking decision that sparked debate among wrestling fans. The finish saw the 17-time world champion tap out, ending his legendary career in defeat.

    Making John Cena Tap Out

Gunther addressed the reaction to the match finish, acknowledging the frustration from some fans while defending the significance of the moment.

“People were frustrated that this is how it ended… when you hear the reaction after the tapout, it’s just crazy,” GUNTHER said.

“That’s the biggest achievement too where it’s like the guy that always said ‘Never give up,’ I can make him give up. That’s maybe worth more than any title you can win.”

The former World Heavyweight Champion highlighted the symbolic importance of forcing Cena to submit, breaking the mantra that defined much of Cena’s career.

    Retiring Wrestling Legends

Gunther has developed a pattern of defeating wrestling legends in their final matches. In addition to Cena, he defeated Goldberg and AJ Styles in their retirement bouts.

The Austrian’s attention now turns to WWE WrestleMania 42 this weekend, where he faces Seth Rollins.

Seth Rollins Confirms Backstage Report About Gunther Match

Seth Rollins has confirmed that the Gunther match has not been planned for long.

There had been some uncertainty about who the Architect would be facing at WrestleMania this year after his Elimination Chamber return. Reports suggested that WWE was hoping for Bron Breakker to get cleared for the show while the Ring General looked to be heading for a match against Rey Mysterio at the PPV.

The company seems to have changed direction a couple of weeks ago; however. Gunther saved Paul Heyman from another Seth Rollins attack on last week’s Raw, and a match between the two was then quickly announced for Mania.

Seth Rollins vs. Gunther Was Finalized Recently

The Visionary talked about his Crown Jewel shoulder injury and return during his latest appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. Rollins first discussed how he really did not want to miss WrestleMania due to an injury again after missing the show once in 2016. Seth then confirmed that the bout with Gunther has not been the plan for long and the whole thing came together over the last couple of weeks:

“I missed one WrestleMania in my career and it was one of my lowest moments and so I’m very happy to be back and be able to get in the ring. Not just do a run-in or anything like that but actually have a contest. Wrestling one of the best in the world, Gunther, in a match that’s kind of come together over the last couple of weeks and so I’m pretty excited for that one.”

The match between the two former World Champions has been confirmed for Night 1 of WrestleMania 42. On the latest Raw, Gunther suggested that Paul Heyman owed him a favor for recusing him, so it seems likely that their association will continue beyond the upcoming PPV.

  • WWE Legend Open to Facing Gunther: ‘Would Bring A Stiffness out of me

WWE Legend Open to Facing Gunther: ‘Would Bring A Stiffness out of me

WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam recently expressed interest in facing Gunther, stating he believes a match with ‘The Ring General’ could lead to more opportunities with the company. ‘The Whole F’n Show’ addressed the possibility during RVDTV.

Van Dam said he would welcome the invitation and sees it as a chance to showcase his abilities. He believes a strong performance could convince WWE to bring him back for additional appearances.

“I think that would be a great opportunity if I had the invite, you know? Sounds like a pretty damn great payday, and of course, after the match, WWE would be like, ‘Damn! RVD looks so f***ing good. Got to come up with more plans for him now.’”

“And then they would want to throw all kinds of money my way. And yeah, I think that Gunther would bring a stiffness out of me, just with what I’ve seen with his chops and stuff like that. Maybe in a way that Bob Holly did.”

Gunther’s Recent Victories Over WWE Legends

The former World Heavyweight Champion has built a reputation for defeating and retiring veteran wrestlers in high-profile matches. In less than a year, he has beaten Goldberg and John Cena in their final matches and forced AJ Styles into retirement in January earlier this year.

The pattern has established Gunther as WWE’s go-to opponent for legends looking to end their careers. Van Dam’s comments suggest he’s aware of this dynamic and sees value in being part of that storyline.

Gunther’s next match is scheduled for WrestleMania 42, where he will face Seth Rollins. The match appears to be happening as a favor for Paul Heyman, according to recent storyline developments.

  • Ladder Match, 3 More Bouts Added To WrestleMania 42

Ladder Match, 3 More Bouts Added To WrestleMania 42

Multiple new matches have been added to WrestleMania.

The March 30 episode of Raw featured the surprise return of Gunther after being off TV for the last few weeks. He stopped Seth Rollins from attacking Paul Heyman. Adam Pearce then confirmed that the two former world champions will be meeting in a singles match at the upcoming PPV.

After Penta successfully defended his IC Championship against Kofi Kingston on the episode, he announced a ladder match for his title. Dragon Lee, Je’Von Evans, Rusev, and JD McDonagh were confirmed as participants for this bout by the commentary team later on.

Apart from this, a singles match between Finn Balor and Dominik Mysterio, as well as a fatal four women’s tag team title match was also made official during the night.

  • WWE Keeping Big Plans for Gunther Despite Ongoing Absence

WWE Keeping Big Plans for Gunther Despite Ongoing Absence

Former World Champion Gunther has been absent from WWE television since defeating Dragon Lee on the March 2nd, 2026 edition of Raw. His status for WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas remains unclear following WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio’s injury.

As per WrestleVotes Radio on FightfulSelect.com, WWE sources indicated Gunther is still expected to have a substantial role at WrestleMania 42. However, his participation now depends on whether Rey Mysterio receives medical clearance.

    Original WrestleMania Plans Derailed

Gunther’s original WrestleMania 42 plans included a feud with Dragon Lee that would culminate in a match against Rey Mysterio. Those plans were disrupted when Mysterio suffered a rib injury before the Royal Rumble.

Mysterio has not wrestled since January due to the injury. Without Mysterio’s clearance, Gunther’s WrestleMania 42 match remains in question.

    Recent Activity and Absence

Gunther retired AJ Styles at the 2026 Royal Rumble in his most recent high-profile appearance. He then defeated Dragon Lee on the March 2 edition of Raw before disappearing from programming.

The former World Heavyweight Champion has not appeared on WWE television since, including missing the March 16th Raw. ‘The Ring General’ has competed in championship matches at the last three WrestleManias before 42.

Gunther lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Jey Uso last April. Two years ago, he lost the Men’s Intercontinental Championship to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania.

  • GUNTHER’s WrestleMania 42 Status In Limbo

GUNTHER’s WrestleMania 42 Status In Limbo

GUNTHER has had one of the most dominant years of anybody in professional wrestling, but he may be without a prominent match at WWE’s biggest event of the year.

According to Bodyslam.net, the two-time World Heavyweight champion was slated to battle Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42. The plans were already in motion for this showdown, with GUNTHER’s ongoing feud with Dragon Lee designed to lead into a clash with Mysterio.

Unfortunately, Mysterio still recovering from a double rib fracture suffered on January 27th, and may not be healthy in time.

Mysterio spoke about his health earlier this week, revealing he suffered fractured ribs on both his left and right sides. While he noted he is “on the way up” in terms of recovery, the physical demands of a WrestleMania-caliber match present an obvious concern with the event just weeks away.

GUNTHER, who has built his “Career Killer” persona by retiring legends including John Cena and AJ Styles in consecutive weeks, finds himself without a confirmed dance partner for the Show of Shows.

Brock Lesnar and Oba Femi had been discussed as other potential opponents, but they’re now scheduled to face one another.

  • Gunther Opens Up on Weight Loss, Body Image Pressure: \’Factually Not Realistic\’

Former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther has given his most candid account yet of the physical transformation that changed his career trajectory and issued a warning about the toll that staying in shape year-round places on professional wrestlers.

Speaking on What Do You Wanna Talk About? with Cody Rhodes, the \’Ring General\’ was asked about his dramatic weight loss since arriving on WWE television. His answer was characteristically blunt.

\”I thought, you know what, you go on television now — it\’s the right thing to do. It\’s about time. I always felt great, I moved well and stamina was not an issue, but it was like — you know what, it\’s gonna be overall the better decision. That was basically the driving factor.\”

Gunther has previously acknowledged being surprised looking back at just how big he was — he estimates he was \”300 easily at the highest,\” with his current working weight around 240–245 pounds.

But the more revealing part of the conversation was what Gunther said about the psychological trap that comes with getting into shape as a professional athlete.

\”It\’s a bit of a slippery slope sometimes because it\’s a big factor for us to be in shape, but also we\’re not bodybuilders. It\’s so hard to judge yourself where your sweet spot is. Because when you look at yourself in the mirror, it\’s always like, \’Oh, I should do more\’ — while objectively everybody else tells you, \’No, no, you look great. What are you doing?\’ And once you\’re really in it, you have tunnel vision. You can adapt your whole day to just — get my five meals in, get my training in.\”

Gunther then made a point about the unrealistic standard the wrestling industry quietly imposes on performers — one that he says is simply not achievable by normal human physiology.

\”The best bodybuilder in the world gets in shape once a year. Our thing is we gotta be in shape all year round. That is factually not realistic.\”

Gunther credited those around him, including Ludwig Kaiser, with helping him find perspective during the process. He also noted that his wife — former wrestler Jinny — provides a grounded support system that keeps those pressures from becoming all-consuming at home.

The transformation has clearly paid dividends. Since arriving on WWE\’s main roster in 2022, Gunther became the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in company history and captured the World Heavyweight Championship twice — making him one of the most decorated European performers in WWE history. He even retired legends like John Cena and AJ Styles.

  • Gunther on Michael Cole\’s \’Pro Wrestling\’ Call: \’It Was Validation for My Whole Career\’

Gunther recently revealed the deep personal significance of Michael Cole\’s now-famous commentary line from the John Cena retirement match at Saturday Night\’s Main Event — calling it a career-defining moment of validation.

When Cole declared, \”sports entertainment is dead, pro wrestling beats sports entertainment\” as Gunther made Cena tap out, it landed differently for the Ring General than for almost anyone else in the building.

Speaking on What Do You Wanna Talk About? with Cody Rhodes, Gunther explained why those words cut so deep.

\”My whole time before WWE, the whole moniker of the group back then, was always like, against sports entertainment, professional wrestlers — that whole spiel. So to actually see that making it to this moment was very — what\’s the word for it? It was a big confirmation for myself.\”

Cody offered the word: \”Validation.\” Gunther agreed immediately — \”That\’s the word, yes.\”

Gunther came up through the European independent scene — specifically wXw in Germany and the broader wrestling community that operated under the belief that \”pro wrestling\” and \”sports entertainment\” were fundamentally different things. For much of his career, that distinction was almost an article of faith among his peers.

To then arrive at WWE\’s biggest stage, in the ring for the most emotionally charged match of the year, and hear those exact words spoken by the company\’s lead commentator — it was a full-circle moment he hadn\’t anticipated.

He also noted just how much the moment transcended the usual WWE audience bubble. ESPN broadcast the show live, meaning sports fans who had never seen a wrestling match caught Cena\’s final chapter in real time.

\”Now we work in the best version of WWE that it\’s ever been. I think there are many ways you can make it to the top now. WWE always felt very one direction.\”

The moment has since taken on a life of its own, widely cited as one of the most memorable commentary calls in recent WWE history.

For Gunther, it was something more personal: proof that the path he chose — the road from Vienna\’s indie scene to the ring where John Cena took his final breath as an active competitor — was the right one all along.

Gunther recently marked 20 years since his professional wrestling debut, a milestone that adds further weight to the journey Cole unknowingly narrated in that one sentence.

  • Gunther Eyes Future Showdowns With Rising Stars

Former World Heavyweight Champion Gunther recently laid out a clear vision for his WWE future — and it\’s built around three names: Ilja Dragunov, Bron Breakker, and Oba Femi.

Speaking on What Do You Wanna Talk About? with Cody Rhodes, the \’Ring General\’ articulated exactly where he wants to be in the company and who he wants to face once he gets there.

\”There\’s like a Roman that was here for long and Brock that held that spot for such a long time. I feel like where I want to get to is — be able to get into that spot. But then wrestle Ilja in that position. Have great matches with Bron down the line. Have great matches with Oba. There\’s many more of them. I want to be the guy that is gonna be able to wrestle all of them, have great matches with all of them.\”

Gunther was candid that his ambition isn\’t to be the face of the company in the same all-encompassing way as those who came before him. He sees his ideal role as something different — and he told Cody directly that he admires him for the parts of the job he knows he couldn\’t do himself.

\”I don\’t have that in me to be wanting to be the guy that is at the very mountaintop and everybody looks up to him. I admire you sometimes for what you do because I couldn\’t, man. I wanna be at the top, but in a different role and contribute that way.\”

The list of dream opponents isn\’t random. Gunther and Dragunov share a deep history going back to their days together in wXw, and their rivalry was cut short last year when Ilja suffered a torn ACL. Dragunov has since returned and won the United States Championship on SmackDown.

Breakker is one of the most physically dominant young talents in WWE, while Femi has made a strong impression since moving to the main roster full-time earlier this year.

Gunther also addressed what he sees as the fundamental truth about working at the top of the card: it takes two to make a marquee moment, and he\’s comfortable acknowledging that.

\”The marquee says two names. John Cena\’s retirement match wasn\’t against nobody. We are relying on one another. However you do it, different or not — good luck to you and I look forward to it.\”

With WrestleMania 42 approaching, the Road to the Grandest Stage of Them All is still taking shape — and Gunther appears eager to make the most of wherever it leads.
