  • Released WWE Star Makes Independent Wrestling Return

Karl Fredericks, known to WWE fans as Eddy Thorpe, has officially made his return to the independent wrestling scene. During a multi-promotional event this past Saturday, Fredericks addressed the crowd, confirming his return and taking a shot at his former employers.

On July 26, at the DPW x Prestige x West Coast Pro \”Cruel Summer\” event in San Francisco, Fredericks appeared in the ring during an intermission. In a promo to the live crowd, he confirmed he was back on the independent scene and stated that he has \”regained his love of pro-wrestling.\”

Fredericks also made comments that appeared to be directed at his former \”Eddy Thorpe\” character in WWE NXT. He referenced the \”cowboy\” sitting in Orlando and declared that he is \”not their Indian,\” a clear reference to his previously stated critiques that the character leaned too heavily on his Native American heritage and lacked depth.

Fredericks was part of a round of WWE talent releases on May 2nd that included several other notable names. Since their departures, Braun Strowman has begun taking independent bookings, Shayna Baszler has reportedly returned to WWE in a backstage producer role, and Elayna Black (Cora Jade) has announced she is taking a break from wrestling. Fredericks is the latest from that group to make his next move in the wrestling world.

  • NXT Crowns New #1 Contenders At Live Event

NXT has crowned a couple of new #1 contenders for the brand\’s top titles in the latest series of house shows following New Year\’s Evil.

The latest NXT TV special on January 7 saw the start of a new era as both Oba Femi and Giulia became the new NXT Champion and NXT Women\’s Champion respectively.

This show was followed by a January 10 House Show from Dade City where the Black & Silver brand held a Women\’s Rumble match to determine the new #1 contender for the Women\’s title.

The bout featured names such as Nikkita Lyons and Stephanie Vaquer but in the end, it was Lola Vice who outlasted all the other talents to earn a shot at Giulia\’s title.

Vice wasn\’t the only one who won a title shot at a non-televised event this week, however, and Eddy Thorpe also picked a battle royal victory during the January 11 Live Event from Jacksonville, Florida.

Thorpe was involved in the triple-threat match at New Year\’s Evil where Femi won the NXT title. Eddy ended up hitting the reigning champion Trick Williams with a chair during the ending spot which allowed the Nigerian star to pick up the victory.

It\’s unknown if the contenders will receive their title shots on TV. Though NXT under Shawn Michaels is known for experimenting with the formula. So it\’s very likely that these results will be acknowledged at the upcoming episode of the show.

  • Triple Threat NXT Championship Match Confirmed For New Year\’s Evil

Trick Williams will be defending the NXT Championship against both Oba Femi and Eddy Thorpe at the upcoming New Year\’s Evil special.

Femi has a claim at the title match after winning the Men\’s Iron Survivor Challenge at the NXT Deadline special on December 7. Thorpe on the other hand, believed that he deserved another shot at the title after his championship match with Williams on last week\’s NXT ended in a double pinfall.

The three men met in a segment on the December 24 episode of the Black & Silver show. After an exchange of words, Williams suggested a triple-threat match for the upcoming special. NXT GM Ava then came out to make the match official.

After the announcement, Thorpe tried to sneak attack Trick but the NXT champion moved out of the way and Eddy caught Oba Femi instead. The three stars then brawled and the segment ended with Femi laying down Williams while Thorpe managed to slip away.

This is the second championship match to be confirmed for the upcoming show. Giulia previously earned a shot at Roxanne Perez\’s NXT Women\’s Title after winning the Women\’s Iron Survivor Challenge match.

NXT New Year\’s Evil will be taking place from the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California on January 7, 2025.

  • Watch: What Happened With Trick Williams And Eddy Thorpe After Chaotic End To NXT

The main event of this week\’s NXT between Trick Williams and Eddy Thorpe ended in chaos and things didn\’t improve even after the show went off air.

Williams defended the NXT Championship against Thorpe during the December 17 show after the latter faked an attack and convinced General Manager Ava to give him a shot at the title.

The ending of the championship match then saw Thorpe failing to get the pin after hitting Manifest Destiny on Trick, as he also knocked out the referee in the process. Williams recovered by the time the new referee approached and the match continued.

After some more offense from Thorpe, the NXT Champion hit the Trick Shot and he went for a pin of his own. The problem occurred when the other referee also recovered and simultaneously made the count in favor of Thorpe as Williams\’ shoulder was also down.

    What Happened After NXT

WWE posted the video of NXT GM Ava coming out to sort the situation followed by Shawn Michaels after the show went off air. Aca declared that Trick Williams was the retaining champion on account of all four shoulders being on the mat during the pinfall.

Thorpe was not happy with this decision and he continued arguing with the NXT official. In his frustration, the NXT star shoved Michaels, causing more referees to come out to contain him.

Williams then took matters into his own hands. Shoving Thorpe back into the ring, he delivered another Trick Shot. The NXT champion then stood tall, as both Ava and Michaels retreated through the stage.

This is the second time Michaels has been involved in a physical confrontation with Thorpe in recent weeks. Seeing how the events unfolded tonight, it doesn\’t appear that the storyline is over just yet.

  • Eddy Thorpe Attacked On NXT After Last Week\’s Confrontation

Eddy Thorpe found his fortune turning around multiple times on the same night during the latest NXT episode from the Performance Center.

The 34-year-old picked up a big victory during the show. He won the last chance fatal four-way match to qualify for the Men\’s Iron Survivor challenge at the upcoming Deadline event. Thorpe expressed confidence in winning the upcoming PPV match in an interview after the bout.

Following the main event segment of the show featuring Roxanne Perez however, the cameras hurried through the backstage area. We saw Thorpe laid out as the cameras came to a halt and the show then went off air.

This comes after Thorpe was involved in a high-profile segment during last week\’s NXT. He confronted General Manager Ava in a backstage segment.

After Eddy accidentally caused Ava to be knocked down, NXT Head Shawn Michaels shoved him into a corner in a rare physical interaction.

Ava is the daughter of WWE board member Dwyane \’The Rock\’ Johnson. So the speculation that a Bloodline member could be behind this attack is not too far-fetched.

The attack is most likely to make Thorpe unavailable for the Deadline event this Saturday. The Big question is who will replace the development star if he can\’t compete at the show.
