WWE made history on Saturday night as Survivor Series: WarGames became the first WWE premium live event to take place at an outdoor MLB stadium, with over 45,000 fans packing Petco Park in San Diego, California.

To commemorate the occasion, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria proclaimed November 29th as \”WWE Survivor Series Day\” in the city. Mayor Gloria also honored three hometown performers with San Diego ties: WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, his son Dominik Mysterio, and Nia Jax (Lina Fanene).

\”A HISTORIC NIGHT IN SAN DIEGO,\” Mayor Gloria wrote on social media. \”For the first time, WWE Survivor Series took over an outdoor MLB stadium — right here at Petco Park.\”

The event marked several historic firsts for the nearly 40-year-old Survivor Series franchise: the first time in an outdoor venue, the first in a stadium setting, and the first held at a Major League Baseball facility. It was also WWE\’s first premium live event in San Diego since 2008.

Dominik Mysterio Captures IC Title In Hometown

The hometown honors proved prophetic for Dominik Mysterio, who defeated John Cena to capture the WWE Intercontinental Championship in front of his San Diego fans. The victory came in what was Cena\’s final premium live event appearance of his legendary career.

The match featured a shocking twist when Liv Morgan made her surprise return to WWE. Morgan initially appeared starstruck by Cena, embracing the 16-time world champion before delivering a low blow that allowed Mysterio to score the pinfall victory and reclaim the title he lost to Cena earlier this month in Boston.

The event opened with the Women\’s WarGames match, where the team of Rhea Ripley, IYO SKY, Charlotte Flair, Alexa Bliss, and AJ Lee defeated Nia Jax, Lash Legend, The Kabuki Warriors (Asuka & Kairi Sane), and Becky Lynch. The finish came when AJ Lee forced Becky Lynch to submit to the Black Widow.

In championship action, Stephanie Vaquer successfully retained her Women\’s World Championship against Nikki Bella, connecting with two Devil\’s Kiss maneuvers and a corkscrew moonsault for the victory.

The main event featured the Men\’s WarGames match pitting Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, Roman Reigns, and The Usos against the team of Brock Lesnar, Drew McIntyre, Logan Paul, Bron Breakker, and Bronson Reed with Paul Heyman in their corner.

The historic night at Petco Park continues WWE\’s momentum heading into WrestleMania season, with John Cena\’s retirement tour set to conclude at Saturday Night\’s Main Event on December 13th.
