John Cena is officially heading to WWE Backlash 2026 — and now we know why.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, Cena has signed a new WWE contract that includes a number of appearance dates, with Backlash 2026 in Tampa being one of them.

“So the John Cena thing, the situation there is that he’s on Backlash. I’m not sure what the role will be, because he said he’s never gonna wrestle again. They signed him to a contract which called for a number of appearances, so this is one of those appearances.” — Dave Meltzer

Cena had previously teased the appearance on social media, writing: “Man, if only it were 2023 again!! I might have different business at @WWE #Backlash. Alas, the years pass. I am still gonna try to do something.”

What Will Cena Do at Backlash?

That remains the big question. Cena has been emphatic that his in-ring career is over, but WWE clearly sees value in having him involved at one of their bigger premium live events of the year. Whether that means a promo segment, a confrontation with an active talent, or something else entirely is unclear at this point.

Backlash 2026 takes place on May 9th from the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, and will air on ESPN2 (first hour) and ESPN Unlimited in the United States, with international viewers watching on Netflix.

The confirmed main event sees Roman Reigns defend the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Jacob Fatu.
