Will Ospreay Set For NJPW Return At Sakura Genesis April 4

Will Ospreay is returning to in-ring action for New Japan Pro-Wrestling at Sakura Genesis on April 4th. The AEW star is set to team with United Empire’s Great-O-Khan and HENARE against Taichi, El Desperado, and Yuya Uemura.

Ospreay showed up at New Year Dash and told Callum Newman that he would be back in NJPW to help Newman guide the United Empire faction. Newman tried to attack Ospreay from behind, but fellow United Empire members stopped him.

Newman is headlining Sakura Genesis by challenging Yota Tsuji for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship. This sets up an interesting dynamic with Ospreay returning to support the faction while Newman seeks the top title.

The complete lineup for the April 4 show includes:

IWGP Heavyweight Championship: Yota Tsuji (c) vs. Callum Newman

  • Will Ospreay Announces NJPW Return Plans at New Year Dash, Callum Newman Attempts Attack

Will Ospreay made a surprise appearance at NJPW New Year Dash 2026 on January 5, announcing plans to return to NJPW full-time once medically cleared from neck surgery while nearly becoming the victim of an attack from his former protégé.

Following United Empire\’s eight-man tag victory over Yota Tsuji, David Finlay, Shingo Takagi and Drilla Moloney, Ospreay emerged to address the faction. The AEW star embraced HENARE and Great-O-Khan but notably ignored Jake Lee completely.

Ospreay told Callum Newman he\’s like his \”little brother\” and apologized for not realizing his NJPW departure caused United Empire\’s struggles. \”Once I handle business in AEW, I\’ll return to NJPW to support Newman,\” Ospreay stated, offering to do things Newman\’s way.

Newman appeared to accept the olive branch before grabbing a chair to attack Ospreay. HENARE and Great-O-Khan quickly intervened, stopping the assault while Ospreay\’s back was turned. Newman stormed out of the ring without explanation.

The tension stems from Newman\’s resentment over Ospreay\’s 2024 departure. In a pre-Wrestle Kingdom interview, Newman revealed Ospreay never contacted him after leaving NJPW, stating: \”He gave me a hug and said \’Behave.\’ That\’s it, and he got in a taxi and left. Didn\’t get a phone call, didn\’t get a text message even.\”

Ospreay underwent neck surgery in September 2025 and has been recovering with a projected timeline that could see him return to action later in 2026.

  • Olympic Gold Medalist Aaron Wolf Wins NJPW Title in Pro Wrestling Debut

Aaron Wolf made history at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20, winning the NEVER Openweight Championship in his very first professional wrestling match. The 29-year-old Olympic gold medalist submitted EVIL with a triangle choke in just under 13 minutes, overcoming heavy interference from the House of Torture faction to capture his first championship at the Tokyo Dome.

From Olympic Gold to Pro Wrestling Gold

Wolf won gold in the 100kg judo category at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, defeating South Korea\’s Cho Gu-ham in the final via ippon after more than five minutes of golden score overtime. He also won the 2017 World Judo Championships and became just the 10th male judoka in history to complete the \”triple crown\” of All-Japan Championships, World Championships, and Olympic gold.

Born to an American father and Japanese mother, Wolf became the first athlete of U.S. descent to win the All-Japan Judo Championships in 2019. He retired from competitive judo in June 2025 and signed with NJPW that same month, with Wrestle Kingdom 20 announced as his in-ring debut.

    Young Lion Look Shocked Fans

Wolf surprised the sold-out Tokyo Dome crowd by appearing not as an Olympic celebrity, but as a traditional NJPW young lion. He shed his judo gi on the stage to reveal plain black trunks and boots, with a shaved head completing the stripped-down look typically reserved for NJPW\’s rookie trainees. The presentation signaled that Wolf wanted to earn respect the hard way.

Match Overcame House of Torture Chaos

True to form, EVIL\’s House of Torture faction turned the match into controlled chaos. Early on, EVIL wrapped a chair around Wolf\’s neck and struck it with another chair. Multiple House of Torture members attacked Wolf while referees were distracted, and the towering Don Fale splashed Wolf through a table from the ropes.

Toru Yano, Master Wato, and YOH ran out to help even the odds, but they were overwhelmed by House of Torture\’s numbers. Wolf survived a ref bump, powder to the eyes, and EVIL\’s lariat before finally turning the tide.

    Judo Background Wins the Day

Wolf showed impressive offense throughout, hitting an Olympic Slam and a top rope splash for near falls. When EVIL attempted his Everything Is EVIL finisher, Wolf countered with a judo throw and locked in an armbar. EVIL escaped, but Wolf transitioned to a triangle choke that put the champion to sleep.

The finish played perfectly into Wolf\’s legitimate combat sports background. Rather than pin EVIL, he submitted him with a technique rooted in his judo expertise, giving the victory an air of authenticity that resonated with the Tokyo Dome crowd.

    Building to Wrestle Kingdom

The feud between Wolf and EVIL began at King of Pro-Wrestling in October, when Wolf saved Boltin Oleg from a House of Torture attack. At a subsequent press conference, EVIL spray-painted the NEVER Openweight Championship and mocked it as Wolf\’s \”gold medal,\” setting up the championship match.

Wolf trained at NJPW\’s Noge Dojo in Tokyo since signing, working to translate his judo instincts into professional wrestling. In interviews, he credited watching NJPW since college and specifically mentioned Katsuyori Shibata and Tomohiro Ishii\’s rivalry for the NEVER Openweight Championship as an inspiration.

    What It Means

Wolf becomes the first Japanese Olympic gold medalist to pursue professional wrestling, and NJPW\’s decision to put a championship on him immediately shows enormous confidence in his star power. The company\’s scouting department head, Yuji Nagata, has publicly stated Wolf has the potential to become a \”new ace\” for the promotion.

With the NEVER Openweight Championship around his waist, Wolf\’s next challenge will be proving his debut wasn\’t a fluke. NJPW has announced \”Death Vegas\” for April 16 in Las Vegas, which could provide an opportunity for Wolf to showcase his new championship to American audiences.

  • NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 20 Results: Tanahashi Retires, AEW Stars Appear, New Champion

Tanahashi Retires in Main Event Loss to AEW\’s Okada

Hiroshi Tanahashi, often called \”the John Cena of Japan,\” wrestled his final match after a 26-year career. Kazuchika Okada, currently signed to AEW, defeated \”The Ace\” in 33 minutes with his Rainmaker finisher. Okada played full heel throughout, even pulling Tanahashi up from a pin at the two-count to inflict more punishment. The match saw Tanahashi pay tribute to former rivals Shinsuke Nakamura (now in WWE) and Katsuyori Shibata by using their signature moves.

AEW Stars Appear for Retirement Ceremony

The post-match celebration featured a parade of wrestlers from Tanahashi\’s past. Jay White, Will Ospreay, Kenny Omega, and Kota Ibushi all appeared to present flowers. Ibushi, still recovering from a broken femur, limped to the ring in an emotional Golden Lovers reunion with Omega. The surprise of the night was Tetsuya Naito\’s return to NJPW after leaving the company in April 2025. Keiji Mutoh (The Great Muta) and legend Tatsumi Fujinami also paid their respects.

AEW\’s Takeshita Loses IWGP Title to Yota Tsuji

In the co-main event, NJPW\’s Yota Tsuji submitted AEW\’s Konosuke Takeshita in nearly 30 minutes to unify the IWGP World Heavyweight and IWGP Global Heavyweight Championships. Tsuji forced Takeshita to tap to a Boston Crab, becoming the undisputed top champion. Jake Lee attacked Tsuji after the match, setting up a future title feud.

Olympic Gold Medalist Wins in Pro Wrestling Debut

Aaron Wolf, who won Olympic gold in judo at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, made his pro wrestling debut and immediately won the NEVER Openweight Championship by defeating EVIL via submission in 12 minutes. Wolf overcame heavy interference from the House of Torture faction, including a table splash from Don Fale, to choke out EVIL with a leg-based submission hold.

A statement from New Japan confirmed that Ishii suffered a dislocated shoulder while appearing at an AEW event in October. At this time, it is not known publicly when he will return to action.

\”On October 22, at an AEW event in San Antonio, Texas, Tomohiro Ishii sustained a dislocated right shoulder.

\”As a result, Ishii will miss action on forthcoming events, with his return to be determined.

\”We apologise to fans who were looking forward to seeing Ishii wrestle, and appreciate your understanding. NJPW joins fans in wishing Ishii a full and fast recovery.\”

This is certainly a blow for New Japan, where Ishii is the reigning NJPW Strong Openweight Champion. In NJPW, Ishii is also a six-time Openweight Champion, two-time IWGP Tag Team Champion and three-time NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team Champion.

With Ishii on the shelf, AEW is missing yet another notable name from its roster. In addition to Ishii, the company is missing Kota Ibushi, who is recovering from a fractured femur suffered during the AEW Collision: Homecoming episode. Other notable names out of action due to injuries and recoveries include Will Ospreay, Buddy Matthews, Jay White, and Adam Cole.

Ishii lost to PAC during the match in which he suffered his injury, and fans will just have to wait and see when he returns. We here at SEScoops are sending our best to the 49-year-old and wishing him a speedy recovery.

Takeshita was eventually greeted by IWGP Global Champion Yota Tas Konosuke Takeshita and Kazuchika Okada have had friction with one anotherboth men agreeing to put their belts on the line in a champ vs. champ fight as we encroach upon 2026. Tsuji bested Hiroshi Tanahashi in the penultimate matchup of that referenced event. In referencing Tanahashi once again, the New Japan figurehead and stalwart ace figure will retire from professional wrestling.

Just a few weeks out from capturing the coveted IWGP crown from Zack Sabre Jr., Takeshita seems keen on building up a deeper resume of successful title defenses to cement himself into the history books even more. Konosuke Takeshita notched the first official defense of his IWGP crown when he connected on Goto with a Raging Fire and would presumably want to keep the flame alive at the Tokyo Dome on January 4th.

NJPW made this Wrestle Kingdom main event official over the weekend and this high stakes clash between two titleholders certainly has some of that blockbuster, marquee value that’s expected from New Japan Pro Wrestling’s big annual tentpole event.

Konosuke Takeshita sends a succinct message after his IWGP title defense

Konosuke Takeshita has a massive legacy in the pro wrestling space with the former AEW international champion building quite the resume outside of the All Elite Wrestling sphere. Takeshita took to social media after his victory over the weekend to send out a brief yet authoritative message regarding his enduring status as the IWGP champion when he took to his X page and stated,

  • Hiroshi Tanahashi Discusses Current Plans for His Final Match

Hiroshi Tanahashi will compete in his retirement match at Wrestle Kingdom 20 in January 2026, ending an incredible in-ring career. With the end just two months away, it remains unclear who he will face in his final wrestling match.

New Japan Pro Wrestling recently held a press event featuring talent, including Tanahashi, who also serves as NJPW President. When the topic of his final opponent came up, Tanahashi asked fans to remain patient.

“Please wait a little longer. I’ve fought many different wrestlers throughout my career. I’ll make sure to announce who I want to be [facing].\”

At the recent Gifu tournament, Gedo shared that he intends to prepare an opponent for Tanahashi\’s final match. While Hiroshi remains in the dark, he is optimistic that Gedo will find the right person.

\”Gedo has a long career and a lot of connections. I don\’t know how he\’ll use them, but I\’m sure he\’s a player with whom I have some kind of relationship.\”

Tanahashi announced his retirement plans in October 2024, giving fans plenty of time to come to terms with his in-ring farewell. After his retirement, Tanahashi will commit full-time to his corporate role within New Japan.

Speculation remains rampant about Tanahashi\’s final opponent with some even suggesting WWE\’s Shinsuke Nakamura. At a recent WWE event in Japan, Nakamura made reference to Tanahashi, who responded on social media.

Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest on Hiroshi Tanahashi\’s retirement, including coverage of his final match.

  • Konosuke Takeshita Captures IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at King of Pro Wrestling

AEW star Konosuke Takeshita claimed his first IWGP World Heavyweight Championship on Sunday, defeating Zack Sabre Jr. at New Japan Pro Wrestling\’s King of Pro Wrestling 2025 event.

Takeshita secured the victory with his Powerdrive Knee finisher, ending Sabre Jr.\’s 106-day reign after two successful title defenses. The win came after Takeshita earned his championship opportunity by winning this year\’s G1 Climax tournament.

In a post-match address, Takeshita responded to critics by declaring himself \”The Alpha\” and issued an open challenge to both established stars and rising talent. Veteran Hirooki Goto immediately confronted the new champion, challenging him for the title.

Takeshita\’s decision to cash in his G1 Climax prize at King of Pro Wrestling, rather than waiting until the traditional Wrestle Kingdom event, represents a departure from NJPW convention and signals a potential shift in the promotion\’s main event landscape.

The championship win marks a significant milestone in Takeshita\’s career, placing him among an elite group of titleholders including Kazuchika Okada, Will Ospreay, Tetsuya Naito, and Jon Moxley.

  • NJPW Reportedly Scaling Back US Shows

A new report has shed light on the reasons behind New Japan Pro-Wrestling\’s significant reduction in live events held in the United States in 2025. After a period of aggressive expansion into the American market, particularly during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the legendary Japanese promotion has notably scaled back its stateside presence this year.

This shift in strategy has been a topic of discussion among fans, and a new report from Fightful Select has provided insight into the factors that led to the decision. According to the report, the decision to run fewer shows in the United States stems from two key issues: declining ticket sales and a reluctance from some of the Japan-based roster members to make the long trip for the events.

“We’re told that declining attendance, and some NJPW roster members not wanting to make the trip for the shows is what led to their sudden decline.”

The data supports this report, as NJPW has only held three standalone events in the US so far in 2025, with their most recent being the Resurgence show in May. This is a significant drop from the six US shows they had run by this point in 2024 and the eight they presented in 2023. The company\’s US expansion was largely built around the NJPW STRONG brand, which was created during the pandemic to feature its US-based talent. While the weekly STRONG television show was discontinued in early 2023, its championships have remained active on the US shows.

  • Mercedes Moné Eyes NJPW & STARDOM Gold For Belt Collection

Mercedes Moné already holds nine championship titles in wrestling, but The CEO of AEW is always on the hunt for more. Recently, it was confirmed that STARDOM\’S Saya Kamitani and AZM will battle in Korakuen Hall on September 27. This match will see the winner take home the World of STARDOM Championship (held by Kamitani) and the NJPW Strong Women\’s Title (held by AZM.)

Moné would react in a post on X with a simple eyeballs emoji. While she didn\’t say any words, the CEO\’s message was clear: She has eyes on both belts.

Moné has yet to hold gold for STARDOM but is a former NJPW Strong Women\’s Champion. The CEO held the gold earlier this year and lost the title to AZM in a triple-threat match which included Mina Shirakawa.

Moné is on the hunt for her tenth and eleventh championship title in wrestling. With Mercedes\’ efforts for gold already taking her worldwide, it may be just a matter before fans see her competing for some of the top titles in Japan.

  • Bryan Danielson Confirmed For Dynamite & Forbidden Door Role

Bryan Danielson will be a part of the festivities surrounding AEWxNJPW Forbidden Door 2025, though fans shouldn\’t expect him in action. AEW has confirmed that Danielson will be one of the hosts of the show\’s Zero Hour kick-off event. The former AEW World Champion will host alongside Jeff Jarrett, Renee Paquette, and RJ City.

Fans won\’t have to wait until Forbidden Door to hear from the American Dragon. With Taz set to miss tonight\’s AEW Dynamite due to health issues, AEW has confirmed that Danielson will be calling the action in Glasgow, Scotland.

    https://twitter.com/AEW/status/1958219441184923899

Bryan\’s appearance comes amid ongoing speculation about his in-ring future. Danielson has not competed in close to a year since his lost to Jon Moxley at October 2024\’s WrestleDream. While Danielson made a return at All In: Texas, he has been open about the possibility that his career may be over.

Danielson has a unique history with Forbidden Door, including being pulled from the inaugural event in 2022 due to an injury. An injury suffered at Forbidden Door in 2023 would force Bryan to miss months of in-ring action. The 2024 show saw Danielson defeat Shingo Takagi in a Men\’s Owen Hart Cup Tournament First Round match.

Whether he\’s competing or not, Bryan Danielson continues to prove popular among wrestling fans. Stay tuned for the latest from this weekend\’s Forbidden Door pay-per-view.

  • Konosuke Takeshita Wins G1 Climax, Earns IWGP World Title Shot

AEW\’s Konosuke Takeshita has etched his name in the history books by winning the 2025 G1 Climax. Takeshita defeated EVIL in the finals of G1 Climax 35 at Ariake Arena, claiming the tournament trophy and a shot at the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

Despite being a singles match, the bout was anything but one-on-one. EVIL\’s House of Torture allies would make themselves known often in the match, aiding their member. Rocky Romero rushed to ringside to help even the odds, while Zack Sabre Jr. physically removed Ren Narita from the equation.

In a post-match speech, Takeshita revealed that doesn’t just want to challenge at Wrestle Kingdom 20—he wants to walk into the Tokyo Dome as champion. Now, Takeshita intends to challenge for the gold, currently held by Zack Sabre Jr. before the January 2026 event.

Takeshita\’s victory capped off a career-defining G1 run, and his celebration was punctuated by a live performance from BALLISTIK BOYZ, the group behind this year’s tournament theme song. It remains to be seen if Takeshita can follow up this victory with an even bigger one when he challenges for the title.

  • NJPW Star Withdraws From G1 Climax Due To Injury

NJPW star Gabe Kidd has officially withdrawn from the G1 Climax 35 tournament due to a right knee injury. The current IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion made the emotional announcement to fans during Friday\’s NJPW event in Tokyo.

Appearing in the ring on crutches, Kidd confirmed that he could not continue in the prestigious tournament. The injury was sustained during his opening night match against Konosuke Takeshita on July 19.

“I was really hopeful that I could come back and power through this and continue in this G1 Climax, but I’ve spoke to the doctors and there is no way I can be cleared, so I have no other choice [but] to withdraw from the G1 Climax,” Kidd announced. “And this is sh*t, man. It really f*cking sucks. It’s been a mental battle these past few days since I found out this information.”

Despite the setback, Kidd thanked the fans for their messages of support and made a promise for his eventual comeback. Further details about the specific nature of the injury and a potential return date have not yet been provided.

“I can only promise you one thing, is that when I am back fighting on this blue mat that it is going to be the best version of Gabe Kidd that you’ve ever f**king seen,” he declared.

The injury also puts the status of the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship in question. Kidd won the title from Yota Tsuji in June at Dominion and recently made his first successful defense against Hiroshi Tanahashi. New Japan Pro-Wrestling has not yet announced whether Kidd will be forced to vacate the championship due to his injury.

In a press conference, NJPW shared that Aaron Wolf has signed with the promotion. Wolf won the 2021 Olympic gold medal in judo at 100 kg as part of that year\’s games in Tokyo, Japan.

During the press conference, Wolf shared how his journey to New Japan Pro Wrestling came about:

\”I\’ve just come from my last judo tournament… I approached NJPW with the idea to come into professional wrestling. Since I was a college student, I always looked forward to seeing Pro-Wrestling and seeing how cool and aspirational these figures were. I realised this would be a new way to express myself outside of judo.\”

New Japan President Hiroshi Tanahashi was also at the press conference and was excited for Wolf to join. Not only is Wolf joining NJPW, but his debut will come at WrestleKingdom 2026.

\”I have seen first hand Wolf\’s passion for professional wrestling and welcome him to NJPW and have high expectations for him. I would like for Aaron to make his pro-wrestling debut on January 4 2026 at the Tokyo Dome. Please look forward to my retirement match as well as Wolf\’s debut.\”

  • NJPW Resurgence 2025 Results: Title Changes and Double Main Event Drama

NJPW Resurgence 2025 took place on May 9 at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California, showcasing high-profile matches, major title shifts, and notable returns.

In the night’s headline matches, AZM emerged as the new NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion, pinning Mina Shirakawa in a triple threat bout that also included Mercedes Moné. Moné nearly broke the fall but was a moment too late, allowing AZM to score a career-defining win.

The IWGP World Heavyweight Championship match between Hirooki Goto and Zack Sabre Jr. ended in a no-contest after a double pinfall. As a result, Goto retained the title, leaving the championship picture unresolved.

  • Mercedes Moné Loses NJPW Strong Women\’s Title to AZM At Resurgence

Mercedes Moné is one of wrestling\’s most dominant women but now the CEO has lost one of her championships. At NJPW Resurgence, AZM captured the NJPW Strong Women\’s Championship from Moné in a triple threat match that included Mina Shirakawa.

The finish of the match saw the three wrestlers trade pin attempts before Moné was taken out outside of the ring. AZM rolled up Mina Shirakawa to get the 1-2-3 and win the gold. After the match, AZM grabbed the microphone to cut a promo in Japanese before telling the fans \”I am so happy!\”

Moné was the fourth holder of the NJPW Strong Women\’s Title and had held the gold since Forbidden Door 2024, where she defeated Stephanie Vaquer. Despite this loss, Mone remains the AEW TBS Champion, as well as the Undisputed British Women\’s Champion for Revolution Pro Wrestling.
