  • The Sandman Retires From Wrestling After Final Match At Spring Break X

The Sandman Retires From Wrestling After Final Match At Spring Break X

The Sandman has officially retired from professional wrestling. The ECW legend wrestled the final match of his nearly four-decade career Friday night at GCW Joey Janela’s Spring Break X, held at the Horseshoe in Las Vegas during WrestleMania 42 weekend.

The 62-year-old hardcore icon, real name James Fullington, fell to The Invisible Man in a match that turned into pure chaos, featuring a completely unadvertised run-in from Mick Foley.

Mick Foley Crashes The Sandman’s Farewell

Foley, who has been performing his “40 Years of Mick Foley” one-man show in Las Vegas during WrestleMania week, was not announced for the show. The Hardcore Legend stormed the ring mid-match, throwing hands in the corner before dropping his target with a double arm DDT.

Foley then pulled out Mr. Socko, locked in the Mandible Claw, and tossed the iconic sock to The Sandman. The ECW legend slipped it on, embraced Foley, and the crowd lost it.

The Invisibles then jumped both men from behind, and The Invisible Man rolled up The Sandman for the pin. Fullington’s career ended with a loss to thin air.

A Career Nearly Four Decades In The Making

The Sandman debuted in 1989 and logged close to 900 matches according to Cagematch. He became one of the defining faces of ECW, winning the ECW World Heavyweight Championship a record five times and capturing ECW Tag Team gold alongside 2 Cold Scorpio.

His entrance through the crowd to Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” beer in hand and Singapore cane at the ready, became one of the most imitated bits in wrestling history. He later competed in WCW, TNA, and WWE, teaming with Tommy Dreamer, Rob Van Dam, and Sabu as part of the ECW Originals at WrestleMania 23.

Friday’s match capped a multi-year Spring Break tradition of sending ECW legends out on Janela’s stage. Sabu wrestled his retirement match at Spring Break IX last year, passing away just weeks later. The Sandman actually made a surprise run-in during that match, foreshadowing his own farewell twelve months later.

2026: The Year Of Wrestling Retirements

The Sandman joins a growing list of legends hanging up the boots in 2026. NJPW President Hiroshi Tanahashi retired earlier in the year, and AJ Styles had his career-ending match at Royal Rumble. The Spring Break X retirement was announced in February, with The Invisible Man revealed as his opponent weeks later.

Appearances on the show also included Missy Hyatt, Kendra Lust, and the ECW Zombie, adding to the hardcore nostalgia. With the loss now in the books, The Sandman walks away as one of the most imitated and punished bodies in wrestling history.

A Year of Hardship and Recovery

2025 was one of the most difficult years in Nick Gage\’s personal life. The Deathmatch King\’s longtime partner, Sondra Culbertson, passed away in April 2025 at the age of 43 after 26 years together.

Shortly after making a surprise return at GCW Homecoming on August 23rd — helping Shotzi Blackheart fend off Matt Cardona — Gage competed one final time at Focus Pro\’s My Friends Over You event on September 20th before disappearing from the scene entirely.

In October 2025, GCW owner Brett Lauderdale confirmed the news that many fans had feared: Gage had entered a long-term treatment program. \”Nick Gage will not be attending any shows for the foreseeable future,\” Lauderdale wrote at the time. \”He is currently in treatment (and has been for several weeks) and plans to stay indefinitely.\”?

Then, on October 1st, Gage reportedly came face-to-face with death before his recovery took hold.?

    \”The King Is Back\”

By late December 2025, the tone had shifted dramatically. Lauderdale took to social media to share photos of a healthy-looking Gage and a stirring update on his progress. \”On Oct 1st, this guy was face to face with death,\” Lauderdale wrote.

\”In less than 3 months, the turnaround is shocking & remarkable. This is what it looks like when you break free from decades of addiction and finally start believing in yourself. The king is back and I couldn\’t be more proud MDK.\” Lauderdale also credited WWE Hall of Famer Sean \”X-Pac\” Waltman for his role in assisting Gage\’s recovery.?

For full details on Gage\’s health journey, read SEScoops\’ coverage:

    MDK All Day, Every Day

Gage, 45, is widely considered the face of Game Changer Wrestling. A three-time GCW World Champion, his career highlights include a nationally televised match against Chris Jericho on AEW Dynamite in July 2021 and a title-winning victory over Jon Moxley in a Title vs. Career match.

His story, including a five-year prison stint from 2011–2016 for bank robbery, was documented in an acclaimed 2021 episode of Dark Side of the Ring.

    Event Details:

  • The Sandman\’s Retirement Match Set for GCW Spring Break X

The Sandman has an opponent for his final match. Game Changer Wrestling announced the hardcore wrestling icon will face none other than The Invisible Man at GCW Spring Break X, held at The Horseshoe Las Vegas during WrestleMania 42 weekend.

    https://twitter.com/JANELABABY/status/2021022830465265852?s=20

The Invisible Man brings his own Spring Break history to the bout—he previously competed at Spring Break 3 against Invisible Stan, continuing the character\’s tradition of appearing at the promotion\’s flagship event.

The Sandman\’s choice of opponent for his retirement match is unconventional, but there wasn\’t much conventional about his Hall of Fame career. Expect a fun sendoff for this one of a kind performer.

  • Nick Gage Health Update: GCW Owner Says \”The King Is Back\”

Pro wrestling deathmatch legend Nick Gage has made a remarkable recovery after being \”face to face with death\” just three months ago, according to GCW owner Brett Lauderdale.

Lauderdale shared a photos of a healthy-looking Gage on Sunday night, announcing the 45-year-old has turned his life around after decades of addiction struggles. These were taken by renowned photographer Jarod Missimer:

\”On oct 1st, this guy was face to face with death,\” Lauderdale wrote. \”In less than 3 months, the turnaround is shocking & remarkable. This is what it looks like when you break free from decades of addiction and finally start believing in yourself. The king is back and i couldn\’t be more proud MDK.\”

Lauderdale also thanked WWE Hall of Famer Sean \”X-Pac\” Waltman for his assistance in Gage\’s recovery.

2025 has been a difficult year for Gage. His longtime partner Sondra Culbertson passed away in April at age 43 after 26 years together. Gage last competed on September 20th before entering treatment indefinitely in October.

The GCW icon has been open about his battles with addiction, including a previous rehab stay in 2024. Gage served five years in prison from 2011-2016 for bank robbery during the height of his addiction struggles.

Lauderdale also had harsh words for those who he says failed Gage during his darkest moments.

\”To the haters, grifters, enablers & bad faith \’brothers\’ who cowardly looked the other way or played dumb when you were called out, die slow, your time will come,\” he added.

No word yet on when Gage may return to the ring.

  • Nick Gage Currently In Treatment, Plans To Stay Indefinitely

Nick Gage is currently in a treatment program, with no timeline set for his return to professional wrestling. On X, Brett Lauderdale shared an update confirming that Gage “will not be attending any shows for the foreseeable future.” Gage has been in treatment for several weeks and has no plans to leave the program at this time.

Lauderdale assured promoters who had paid deposits for Gage’s appearances that he would make things right. He also noted that fans can expect an update directly from Gage when the time is right and was grateful to those who have shown support.

Gage\’s most recent match came in September 2025 at Focus Pro Wrestling\’s Focus Pro My Friends Over You event. There, the former GCW World Heavyweight Champion earned a win over Brian Bayside.

Gage’s decision to enter treatment reflects his commitment to prioritizing his health and well-being over his in-ring career. While there’s no word yet on when he will return to wrestling, fans continue to send him support and encouragement during this time.

  • Killer Kross, Scarlett & Nick Gage Help Shotzi Win Garage Beer Championship at GCW Homecoming

GCW Homecoming Night 1 delivered major surprises when Killer Kross, Scarlett Bordeaux, and Nick Gage made unexpected appearances to help Shotzi Blackheart defeat Matt Cardona for the Garage Beer Championship.

The former WWE and Impact Wrestling stars’ interference, alongside GCW legend Gage’s dramatic return after over a year, proved decisive in the chaotic bout, marking a significant cross-promotional moment for Game Changer Wrestling. Cardona’s reign ends following the controversial finish, while Shotzi captures her first GCW championship.

The appearances add an intriguing dynamic to the independent wrestling landscape and showcase GCW’s ability to attract high-profile talent from across the industry.

Here are the full results from GCW Homecoming Night 1, which took place on August 23, 2025, at the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ:

  • Shotzi Blackheart Is Your New Indy God, Attacks Indi Hartwell

Since being released from WWE, Shotzi Blackheart has redefined herself as the \’Indy God,\’ a moniker that Matt Cardona has been using since his own WWE exit in 2020. After brawls, ambushes, and legal documents, the two finally met in the ring with one person left standing tall.

At GCW\’s Boss of All Bosses, the pair finally met in the ring. Despite nursing a broken hand suffered at the hands of Cardona, Shotzi held nothing back. Blackheart arrived in an Indiana Jones inspired attire, a motif that Cardona has previously used.

Shotzi overcame her injury to defeat Cardona, seemingly cementing herself as the one, true Indy God. Her night was far from over though, as after her match, she made her way to a House of Glory Wrestling event. There, she attacked Indi Hartwell, who had previously pitched herself as the God of the independent scene.

Shotzi also had some strong words after her attack on Hartwell.

Shotzi Blackheart is proving to be a vengeful God, one who does not take kindly to others trying to claim her throne. With a war with Hartwell brewing, it may be a matter of time before the pair meet with gold on the line.

  • Brodie Lee Jr. Pulls Double Duty With ROH & GCW Appearances

Brodie Lee Jr. is learning all about the grind of the wrestling business after making multiple appearances on Friday, July 11. The young wrestling prodigy pulled double duty with surprise appearances at both ROH Supercard of Honor and GCW Boss of All Bosses.

Brodie Jr. first appeared during the Zero Hour portion of Supercard of Honor, aligning himself with the Dark Order (Evil Uno, John Silver, and Alex Reynolds). During the Dark Order\’s match with the Frat House (Preston Vance, Griff Garrison, and Cole Karter), Brodie provided a crucial distraction that helped the Dark Order pick up the win.

Later, Brodie Jr. turned up at GCW’s Boss of All Bosses, walking out alongside Man Like Dereiss. During the show, Brodie got physical with Joey Janela. The young star delivered a series of crowd-popping moves, including a satellite DDT, a superkick, and a Canadian Destroyer. He also delivered a discus lariat, a touching nod to his late father.

Earlier this year, Brodie Jr. officially made his in-ring debut at Joey Janela’s Spring Break, where he won the Clusterf***k Battle Royal. Between this win and these apprearances for ROH and GCW, its clear that Brodie Jr. is just getting started.

  • Shotzi Announces Death Match Retirement, With One Exception

Former WWE Superstar Shotzi Blackheart is through with competing in death matches, unless a certain opponent emerges to face her in the ring. At GCW Wrestling\’s Terms of Service event, Shotzi competed in a brutal death match. During the match, she too a DDT through a door, a fork to the heaad, and a powebomb on a pane of glass but was still standing tall by the end.

On X, Shotzi shared some before and after photos, highlighting the effects of the violent match.

Shotzi would also reveal that she is through competing in death matches. With that in mind, a potential match with Nick Gage would make her reconsider.

Shotzi was cut from WWE earlier this year, with fans wondering what her future will look like. Now, fans can seemingly count out more death matches unless Gage, a prolific death match wrestler, makes it happen.

  • Joey Janela Clarifies Sabu Kratom Comments After Fan Backlash

Joey Janela has taken to social media to clarify comments he made in a recent Yahoo Uncrowned interview about the late Sabu, particularly concerning Sabu\’s kratom use before a GCW match and an in-ring incident. His original interview described Sabu taking kratom after arriving late, appearing on \”a different f—ing planet,\” and being \”knocked out cold\” during the match. These comments led to fan speculation following Sabu\’s recent passing.

In a lengthy post on X, Janela stated the Yahoo interview occurred just two days after the GCW match, weeks before Sabu\’s death, and he wasn\’t aware of what would later transpire. He admitted to exaggerating the in-ring moment: “I said he was ‘knocked out’ after that spot when despite being a rough deal. He was not that. I was just trying to add to the lore and [unpredictability] of Sabu.”

Janela further explained that Sabu took kratom \”daily for years,\” reportedly to help him get off other addictive substances, not just for that one event.

A follow-up report from Fightful Select\’s Sean Ross Sapp noted that GCW officials were “frustrated, embarrassed and humiliated” by Janela\’s original interview. The Fightful report also added there was no evidence suggesting the match itself contributed to Sabu’s death.

  • Brodie Lee Jr. Makes In-Ring Debut

Brodie Lee Jr., the son of the late Brodie Lee, can now say he has wrestled a pro wrestling match. He did so when he worked GCW’s The Collective event in Las Vegas this weekend.

He was brought out as a surprise by Chris Bey as the final entrant in the Clusterf*** battle royal, as Brodie showed up. He was given a strong reaction by the fans.

At the end of the match, the young man hit a stunner to Janela and sent him over the top rope. After the match, he celebrated in the ring and did his father’s pose.

This marks the first of what could be many wrestling matches for the son of the late, great performer. He has a passion for the pro wrestling business. He’s been training for years and looks to have significant upside as a second-generation wrestler

Brodie made a memorable appearance on AEW TV in the early 2020s as Negative 1.

A former AEW star has announced his retirement from active competition.

Fuego Del Sol competed in a Mask vs. Career match against Atticus Cogar at GCW\’s Joey Janela’s Spring Break 9 from Pearl Theatre at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas this Friday night. After losing the bout, the high-flying star not only removed his mask but he also left his boots in the ring, which is generally a sign of a talent stepping away from active competition.

The 29-year-old, real name KJ Orso, also posted an emotional message on social media with the video of his GCW match. He noted that he\’d been chasing his dream but it\’s now time for him to focus on his family:

\”11 Years…Ups. Downs. Everything in between. I’ve been selfish and doing this for me. Now it’s time to focus on my family and feeding them. I left everything I had left in the ring…including my boots. From the bottom of my heart… Thank you all for everything. Fuego is Done.\”

Fuego made his debut in 2014 and competed in the Oklahoma and Texas indie circuits for many years. During this time, he also made appearances for Impact Wrestling and WWE on occasion.

Del Sol made his AEW debut in 2020 and made regular appearances for the company throughout the pandemic era. A friend of Sammy Guevara, Fuego was offered a contract in 2021. He stayed with the promotion for 2 years before announcing his departure in 2023.

  • William Regal Contacted About In-Ring Return for WrestleMania 41 Week

GCW’s Josh Barnett has confirmed he has spoken with WWE\’s William Regal about the possibility of returning to the ring during WrestleMania 41 week.

The WWE Vice President of Global Talent Development last competed in November 2013, when he faced Antonio Cesaro (Claudio Castagnoli) in NXT.

During a recent appearance on Ringsiders Wrestling, Barnett revealed he reached out to Regal for a potential match at GCW’s Bloodsport XIII, part of The Collective series in April 2025.

“You think I haven’t had some conversations with William Regal about, ‘If you should feel spry…’” Barnett said. “The ball is in his court. If he says it’s time, done. If he prefers spectating, that’s also done. Whatever he wants—he’s right.”

Regal has made appearances at GCW events in the past, while his son, Charlie Dempsey, competed at three Bloodsportshows in 2024.

GCW will host Bloodsport XIII on April 17, featuring Natalya’s debut GCW match and Pete Dunne’s first appearance with the promotion.

Game Changer Wrestling (GCW) has announced a unique matchup for its upcoming No Compadre event on March 29 at Thalia Hall in Chicago. The card will feature AEW’s Megan Bayne facing off against WWE NIL signee Zayda Steel—an uncommon crossover in today’s wrestling landscape.

Bayne, who has been competing in AEW and abroad, brings her powerhouse style to GCW, while Steel, a rising star under WWE’s developmental umbrella, steps into one of her highest-profile matches yet. The bout is particularly notable given that both AEW and WWE are allowing their respective talent to share the ring, a rare occurrence in modern pro wrestling.

While interpromotional matchups have happened in independent wrestling, a decisive finish between talent affiliated with two major wrestling promotions would be unexpected. Regardless of the outcome, this clash marks a significant moment for both competitors and fans alike.

GCW No Compadre will stream live on TrillerTV+ at 8 PM CT.

  • Former AEW Star Reveals Nerve Damage After Recent Match

It\’s always said that a talent is two inches away from catastrophe while wrestling a match and former AEW star Joey Janela recently found this out firsthand.

The Bad Boy revealed on Twitter recently that he is dealing with a ruptured bicep after his most recent indie match. Not only that, the 35-year-old has also suffered nerve damage which has resulted in him losing feeling in a couple of his fingers:

In the hospital, just got to see a doctor looks like now after my match yesterday and attack today by Atticus, I not only have a complete ruptured bicep but also nerve damage to the arm that’s affecting the my arm all the way down to the hand.

The former GCW World Champion was one of the first talents signed by AEW upon its inception in 2019. He had high profile matches with names such as Jon Moxley, Kenny Omega and Darby Allin during his stint with the company that ended in 2022.

SEScoops wishes a speedy recovery to Joey Janela.

  • Brett Lauderdale Reacts To PCO Destroying TNA Title At His Show

GCW promoter Brett Lauderdale is unsure of what to make of the PCO incident.

The 57-year-old wrestling veteran made headlines over the weekend with his appearance at the People vs. GCW event. PCO who was the reigning TNA Digital Media champion brought the belt with him at the show and destroyed it in front of the public using a sledgehammer. At first, people thought that it was part of a storyline but multiple reports since then have claimed that TNA officials had no knowledge of it beforehand.

Lauderdale talked about the incident on the Game Changer Weekly podcast and mentioned that PCO is a longtime friend of his who he has a lot of respect for. Discussing his knowledge of the incident in question, he claimed that he was under the impression of the whole thing being a work:

\”What happened and what I thought was gonna happen were slightly two different things, and I thought we were kind of doing him a favor by letting him advance a storyline and returning to GCW at the same time, so I only kind of realized that it was more than that after the fact when I started reading reports that he may or may not have done that on his own.\”

I Think There Is A Storyline Going On: Brett Lauderdale

PCO was one of the many names who had his TNA deal expire at the end of last year and per reports, he was supposed to finish up with the company at their next taping. After the incident, however, TNA has removed both PCO and the Digital media title from their website, and the former WCW star is not expected to be brought back for any more shows.

Though despite these claims, Brett Lauderdale is not entirely sure of the legitimacy of the whole thing and he still believes that it could be a work:

\”No. I know a lot of the people at TNA, so I feel like I would have been contacted if there was any major issue that would have been on us or if they had questions about it.

That’s why I think maybe there is still a storyline going on with it because I feel like maybe if there wasn’t, after the fact, they would have said, ‘Hey, what happened?’

TNA is set to follow up the January 19 Genesis PPV with a live Impact taping from San Antonio, TX this Thursday, January 23. Whether or not the whole thing is really a work should become clearer after this show.

  • EFFY Wins GCW World Title at ‘The People vs GCW’

EFFY is the new GCW World Champion following a dramatic night at The People vs. GCW, held in the iconic Hammerstein Ballroom.

Originally, the championship match was set to feature Mance Warner defending his title against the winner of EFFY vs. Allie Katch. Unfortunately, their earlier matchup ended prematurely after Allie Katch suffered a serious leg injury during a dive, forcing her to withdraw and granting EFFY a default victory.

The main event between Mance Warner and EFFY was a brutal, chaotic clash reflective of their long-standing rivalry. The fight featured brawling outside the ring, the use of weapons such as chairs, doors, and even screwdrivers, and a level of intensity that captivated the audience.

The turning point came when Cole Radrick handed EFFY a guitar, which he used to incapacitate Warner and secure the decisive pinfall.

With this victory, EFFY not only ends Warner’s reign as GCW Champion but also captures his first-ever singles title in GCW, a major milestone after years of contributing to the promotion.

This segment took place just as TNA began the main card of their Genesis pay-per-view event.

PCO had held the Digital Media Championship since Slammiversary, where he defeated AJ Francis for the gold. The Canadian veteran had been a part of TNA since 2022. Previously, he had been with Ring of Honor but parted in late 2021 prior to Tony Khan\’s purchase of the promotion.

This destruction of the title was not part of a storyline, PW Insider reports, but instead PCO airing his genuine frustrations at TNA Wrestling. TNA has yet to address the situation and PCO himself has not commented on what the future of his promotion will look like. Stay tuned to SEScoops for the latest on this developing situation.
