  • Backstage Update on Roman Reigns\’ Next Title Challenger

WWE will be waiting again to see Roman Reigns back in action as Reigns is next scheduled to defend his WWE Universal Title at Crown Jewel on November 5.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that The Tribal Chief will not be wrestling at WWE\’s next premium live event, Extreme Rules, on October 8th.

Meltzer was told the next challenger was neither Seth Rollins nor Kevin Owens, even though both matches have been teased in recent times. With both stars mentioned above being ruled out as Reigns’ opponent at the Saudi Arabia show, it would favor Karrion Kross or Drew McIntyre being the next challenger.

This is unless WWE decides to bring back a big name such as Brock Lesnar or Goldberg, two opponents who have wrestled Reigns in the past. Lesnar’s most recent match was against Reigns at SummerSlam.

Reigns most recently worked a match when he successfully defended the title against McIntyre in the main event of last weekend\’s Clash At The Castle pay-per-view.

Roman is currently in the middle of a record-setting run as Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, as his reign is up to 740 days and counting.

  • WWE Names New Executive VP of Talent

WWE announced today that they’ve hired two new people on the executive side of their company, including a former president of an NFL team.

The announcement touted the hires of former Las Vegas Raiders president Dan Ventrelle in the role of EVP, Talent, and Maurice F. Edelson in the role of EVP, Chief Legal Officer.

This past May, Ventrelle departed from the Raiders and claimed that he was fired \”as retaliation for informing the [NFL] of alleged complaints claiming [Raiders owner Mark Davis] created a hostile work environment as well as other potential misconduct, which he says Davis dismissed.\”

In the role of EVP of talent, Ventrelle will oversee WWE\’s talent department and report to chief content officer Paul \”Triple H\” Levesque.

\”As a lifelong fan, it is an honor to join the world’s premier sports entertainment company,” Ventrelle said. “I am inspired by the vision that Stephanie [McMahon], Nick [Khan] and Paul have for the future and excited to further the commitment to deliver exceptional talent to the WWE Universe.”

“Working with Dan during SummerSlam at Allegiant Stadium last year, we were impressed by his expertise across a number of business and personnel areas,” Levesque said. “We’re excited to welcome him to the company.”

Edelson will report to chairwoman and co-CEO Stephanie McMahon. Edelson was previously an EVP & General Counsel of Time Inc and served as General Counsel since 2015 for The Juilliard School.

Rhea Ripley came out next to say that she had made Dominik a man, and then the son of the former WWE champion walked out to stand with Ripley. Rey left the ring as he said he could not be a part of what was about to happen. Although he asked Dominik to look at him and to apologize to Edge, Dominik refused.

Braun Strowman made a triumphant return to WWE on Monday\’s edition of WWE Raw.

Strowman didn\’t waste any time raising hell. The former Universal Champion interrupted a tag team contender match by attacking Chad Gable and Otis, in addition to several other tag teams and security.

The beast now known as the Monster of All Monsters drove Angelo Dawkins of the Street Profits through the announcers table at ringside.

Twitter user CB caught this ringside footage of Strowman tripping during the ringside melee:

Later in the show, Braun Strowman was briefly interviewed backstage. He announced that he will be on hand for Friday\’s edition of SmackDown from Seattle, Washington.

You can watch the full segment here:

Strowman had this to say to the WWE Universe after his return on Raw:

    Braun’s History

Strowman first joined WWE in 2013 with no wrestling background and fast-tracked to the main roster as Vince McMahon was high on him. He was paired with The Wyatt Family on the main roster.

After splitting away from the faction that included Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, and Erick Rowan, he was pushed as a singles stars after being drafted to Raw in 2016.

In later years, he engaged in feuds with top stars, such as Roman Reigns. He is also a former Intercontinental and Raw Tag Team Champion, as well as a former Money in the Bank briefcase holder. At WrestleMania 36 in 2020, he also won the Universal Title from Goldberg.

There were rumors that he might sign with Impact Wrestling or AEW, but those rumors fizzled, and his price tag may have been a factor following his departure from WWE. Last year, he was involved in a feud with Bray Wyatt and lost to Bobby Lashley on Monday Night Raw.

Strowman has worked eight matches since leaving WWE, mostly for Control Your Narrative.

  • Wrestlers React to CM Punk AEW All Out Madness

CM Punk didn’t just make headlines for his latest victory inside of the squared circle at AEW All Out, but mostly for what he did at the post-show media scrum.

Punk defeated Jon Moxley in the show\’s main event to become the new World Heavyweight Champion.

At the media scrum, he dismissed speculation that he had anything to do with Colt Cabana not being used on AEW programming and noted that he couldn’t care less about his former friend.

He ripped Hangman Page for his comments during a promo earlier this year on an episode of Dynamite heading into Double Or Nothing, where he won the World Title for the first time. More importantly, he stated that the AEW EVPs (Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks) couldn’t run a Target store.

As previously reported, Punk got into a backstage altercation with Omega and The Young Bucks that got physical. A real-life tag team match broke out during the media scrum after Punk said that if anyone had a problem with him, to do so to his face. And that’s exactly what happened.

  • More Details on CM Punk’s Fight With Young Bucks & Kenny Omega at AEW All Out

More information continues to emerge regarding the fight involving CM Punk during the AEW All Out media scrum.

Fightful previously noted Punk allegedly started things by throwing punches at Matt Jackson. The Wrestling Observer confirmed this and noted Punk\’s trainer/friend Ace Steel was allegedly involved as he reportedly threw a chair that hit Nick Jackson in the eye. Kenny Omega was involved with Steel, who was \”grabbing his hair and biting him.”

Steel, who appeared last week on Dynamite works backstage as a Producer for the company. There has been no public comment from anyone involved.

Tonight\’s WWE Raw is from Kansas City and will be a big show as it features the fallout from last Saturday’s Clash at the Castle premium live event, the first PPV event to be held in the UK since 1992.

So far, only one match has been confirmed for the show which is Bobby Lashley defending the United States title against The Miz in a steel cage match. The cage match stipulation is is just the latest sign that WWE is taking its mid-card belts seriously. We\’ve seen a renewed emphasis on the IC and United States championships since Triple H took over creative.

    Braun Strowman\’s Return

    \"Braun

Former WWE Superstar Braun Strowman is rumored to be returning to WWE. According to Fightful Select, Strowman is slated to be backstage at the show. Furthermore, WWE\’s production crew is working on an angle that will involve a car getting flipped over.

During his first run with WWE, Strowman was involved in several stunts that saw cars and trucks getting flipped and demolished.

Also on tap for tonight… the ongoing angle involving Dexter Lumis will continue. The New Day is scheduled for the show and will be part of a program around The Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles, currently held by The Usos.

  • Kevin Owens Appears to Mock CM Punk Following All Out Media Scrum

Punk beat Jon Moxley to win back the AEW World Heavyweight Title in the main event of All Out. While speaking with the media, Punk stated that the AEW EVPs (Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks) couldn’t run a Target store.

He also ripped Hangman Page for his comments during a promo earlier this year on an episode of Dynamite heading into their Double Or Nothing Match, where Pun won the title from Page. Punk also dismissed speculation that he had anything to do with Colt Cabana not being used on AEW programming.

Owens, who is good friends with Matt & Nick Jackson, shared a photo of him throwing hands with Steve Austin from their main event match at WrestleMania 38 earlier this year.

This is notable as Punk has previously talked about being upset that he never got to headline WrestleMania.

Punk and Owens had a falling out several years ago when they both worked in ROH due to Owens wrestling in a t-shirt.

  • MJF Returns, CM Punk Wins AEW World Title at All Out

Earlier in the night, a mystery man with the help of Stokely Hathaway, won the Casino Ladder Match, guaranteeing him a title match. MJF has been away since the post-Double Or Nothing episode of Dynamite where he cut a memorable promo and demanded that Tony Khan fire him.

Their first match came on the August 24th edition of Dynamite when Punk ended up being squashed by Moxley in the AEW World Title unification match. Punk went down and held the foot that he injured a few months ago. Punk took two Death Riders from Moxley and then was pinned. The match lasted over three minutes.

It was later reported that Moxley didn\’t like the original plans for the pay-per-view and he pitched what happened in their first match. He was also reportedly not a fan of the interim title idea.

Punk originally won the AEW World Heavyweight Championshipfrom Hangman Adam Page at Double or Nothing in May, but was sidelined with a foot injury shortly after winning the title.

Moxley became the interim champion at the Forbidden Door pay-per-view event when he beat NJPW\’s Hiroshi Tanahashi.

  • Toni Storm Wins Interim Women’s Title at AEW All Out

Toni Storm was supposed to be the latest star to step up and challenge Thunder Rosa for the AEW Women’s Title at Sunday’s AEW All Out pay-per-view event.

  • Jim Ross Questions The Booking of AEW All Out Main Event

Jim Ross joins many fans in being critical of how Tony Khan has set up the main event of the AEW All Out pay-per-view event.

World Heavyweight Champion Jon Moxley vs. CM Punk will be headlining the event despite AEW booking a champion vs. champion match between them less than two weeks ago on Dynamite that lasted three minutes, with Moxley going over.

AEW announced the rematch on Wednesday’s Dynamite. While speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, the AEW commentator noted some logical things that need to address.

    Jim Ross Voices Criticism

    \"Jim
    (AEW)

\”Well, I think it\’s gonna be unpredictable because I don\’t know how you book this card. I don\’t know how you have a match on Wednesday and your champion gets his ass whipped like a government mule and then you expect to return it Sunday. Why do I need a return? You just got your ass whipped. So there\’s logical things we have to address, quite frankly. I think it\’s gonna be a challenging show for Tony Khan to book but it\’s loaded.\”

Ross also noted that he thinks AEW PPV events are too long as there are 15 matches (4 on the pre-show and 11 on the main card) planned.

\”Sitting out there with our group as it is, this is gonna be a 5-hour show. I\’m not in favor of any 5-hour show. It\’s just too long. Our attention spans are not going to maintain what it needs to be. It\’s a chance for a lot talents to clear the deck and make a name for themselves.\”
