Paul Wight Tells Wild Stories of John Cena’s Toughness

Paul Wight shared a couple of John Cena stories that reframe what toughness actually looks like, speaking on Sky Sports’ Ringmates ahead of AEW’s UK tour. To Wight, the answer wasn’t about who hits hardest. It was about who shows up no matter what.

The first story still sounds barely believable.

“John Cena had neck surgery at 7 a.m. and at 3:00 in the afternoon, he came by the building to say hello to everybody,” Wight said. “This is a guy that had his neck fused and within less than 7 hours, he came by to say hello to everybody.”

Playing Hurt Without Complaint

The second example was just as grim. Wight recalled Cena suffering an eye injury and refusing to sit out.

“I’ve seen him get stabbed in the eye and have his cornea scratched and he’s still at work the next day. That’s pretty tough,” he said.

Wight framed that grind as the norm at the top rather than the exception, the kind of culture where complaining isn’t really an option. He also pointed to reliability as its own form of toughness, singling out longtime friend Billy Gunn.

“Billy Gunn, 100%. He’s solid as stone. He’s been there many times when I needed help, and he’s been there for other people many times when they needed help,” Wight said.

Wight’s Ringmates appearance was tied to AEW’s run through the UK. The promotion tapes Dynamite and Collision at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro on August 26 before All In returns to Wembley Stadium on August 30, 2026.
